Pianist Nikita Fitenko will play Rachmaninoff's "Concerto No. 2 in C Minor" when he performs with the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Richard Rose will conduct the orchestra. Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society season ticket holders are admitted free with their tickets. NSU students are admitted with their I.D. Tickets at the door are $10. Fitenko, an assistant professor of piano at Northwestern, is making his debut with the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony in his first year at the University. With the appearance of his more mature compositions in the early 1900s, Rachmaninoff built himself a strong following among Russia's cultural elite. His individuality was shaped at the time of a growing political and cultural upsurge in Russia, a time which spawned such artistic giants as the great opera singer Fyodor Chaliapine who was a very close friend of Rachmaninoff's. They first met each other at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera in Moscow and the two men continued their friendship working together at the Bolshoi Theater where Rachmaninoff had been invited to work as a conductor. His musical talents were discovered early and his parents took him to St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1882 and studied until 1885 under Demiansky. He then went to the Moscow Conservatory to study with Nikolai Zverev (where Skryabin was a fellow pupil) , and his cousin Ziloti for piano and Taneyev and Arensky for composition. While in Moscow, he chanced to meet Tchaikovsky, who showed interst in his talent. Tchaikovsky was to have conducted his work, the symphonic fantasy The Rock, but he died before being able todo so (Rachmaninoff responded by writing an Elegiac Trio in his memory). About this time , he also wrote his famous Prelude in C-sharp minor at the age of 19. Rachmaninoff graduated as pianist in 1891, with honors, and as composer in 1892, receiving the Great Gold Medal for his examination composition - the opera Aleko, based on a poem by Pushkin. During the ensuing years he composed piano pieces , songs and orchestral works, but the disastrous premiere in 1897 of his Symphony No,1, poorly conducted by Glazunov (it is said that Glazunov was drunk when he conducted this Symphony) , brought about a creative despair that wasn't dispelled until he sought medical help in 1900. He turned to a hypnotist, Dr Nikolai Dahl, who swung his watch in front of the composer and convinced him that his next piece would be world-famous. He went away and wrote this, dedicating it to the good doctor. Then he quickly composed his Second Piano Concerto. It was an immediate success with audiences, becoming the most popular concerto written this century.

He was born in Oneg (near Novgorod) on April 1, 1873 and he died in Beverly Hills on March 28, 1943. Until the death of his friend Scriabin, Rachmaninoff had only played his own music in recitals. After Scriabin died in 1915, Rachmaninoff played his friend's music at a series of recitals, but in a completely different style from Scriabin. Many were outraged, but a young Prokofiev came backstage and told Rachmaninoff that he played very well. Rachmaninoff asked: "And you thought I'd play badly?" After that Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev didn't speak for years. Rachmaninoff was an early wunderkind - he entered the Moscow conservatory when he was 14. He won medals for his piano playing, and he was very serious about composition early in his life. During preparations for performance of the students' final projects, the professor in charge freely cut and altered the students' compositions, but Rachaminoff not only refused to make any changes, he even had the nerve to point out the errors in the professor's conducting. In 1892 he wrote the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor. There is a story that the reason this prelude became so popular is because Rachmaninoff forgot to copywright it, so all the publishers had a field day with it. His first symphony, on the other hand, was very badly received. Afterwards he could not write any music for three years. He was treated by a hypnotic specialist, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who repeated over and over: "You will write your concerto... You will write your concerto... You will work with great facility... The concerto will be of excellent quality." Rachmaninoff did write a concerto, finishing it in 1901, and it became his most popular work. In the years before World War I Rachmaninoff wrote many excellent songs, including Vocalise, and extremely challenging piano piece, "tailored to his own spectacular hands."

With this foundation of instability and being unasved, Rachmoninoff had a hard time adjusting to life as a young man. His extrodinary talent as a pianist is what brought him fame that no doubt would not have existed otherwise. After various failures and successes in his training years, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his First Symphony in 1895. It was met with severe criticism which brought on "the composer's worst crisis of psychic distress and lethargy..." (1). He thus entered a time when he could neither write nor play music. He was then persuaded to visit a certain Dr. Nikolai Dahl, specialized in hypnosis. In 1900, from January to April, Rachmaninoff daily "visited the doctor's somberly velvet-draped chambers. From the quiet, Dahl would repeat over and over: 'You will begin to write...you will work with great facility...the music you write will be good music.' "(1) What this produced was Rachmaninoff's famous Second Piano Concerto . Rachmaninoff said later, "Although it sounds incredible, this cure really helped me. I began to write..new musical ideas began to stir within me - far more than I needed for my concerto."(1)

Special Collections in the Library of Congress Rachmaninoff Archives Music manuscripts, paper, and record collection of Sergei Rachmaninoff MUSIC DIVISION MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION The Rachmaninoff Archives is the largest collection of Sergei Rachmaninoff holographs, personal papers, and memorabilia outside of the Soviet Union. Mrs. Sergei Rachmaninoff decided to donate this extensive family collection to the Library shortly before her death in 1951 and over the years her sister Sophie Satin and daughters, Irina Wolkonsky and Tatina Conus, have generously added material. The archives document the composer's career after his emigration from Russia (1917) with music manuscripts, autograph correspondence, photographs, programs, prizes, clippings, critical studies, biographies, and lists enumerating his recordings, compositions, performances, and repertory as a pianist, opera conductor, and orchestra director. Many important compositions are represented by autograph sketches and scores, among them Prelude in C-sharp Minor , op. 3, no. 2;
