Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, near Novgorod. In Moscow his piano teachers included the stringent disciplinarian Nikolay Zverov and Rachmaninoff's cousin Aleksandr Siloti, who gave him the heritage of his own teacher, the Hungarian pianist-composer Franz Liszt. There also, Rachmaninoff studied with three eminent Russian composers Anton Arensky, Sergey Taneyev, and his most important musical mentor, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.
Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp Minor (1892), for piano and orchestra, and his opera Aleko (1893) established his reputation as a composer. Also written in 1893 was his Trio élégiaque, in memory of Tchaikovsky. In 1897 his Symphony No. 1 in D Minor was performed. Its disastrous reception caused him to stop composing, and for three years he worked solely as a pianist and conductor. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor (1900)

A Window In Time Wednesday, October 27, 1999 RACHMANINOFF PERFORMS HIS SOLO PIANO WORKS: TELARC20 CD-80489 So, we may be trying to scale the walls of Parnassus, at least some of us. Meanwhile we should each be aware that the process is not just fraught with agony but graced with pleasures. In the case of pianism, the listening as well as the playing, some of these pleasures are in fact almost the richest that can be experienced in this brief life of ours. It is hence best to lay down our cudgels and accept with honesty and regard what treasures we may come upon. Such are these incredible miraculous performances "realized" by Wayne Stahnke. The first thing to note is that the piano used is an immense B?sendorfer grand piano. The sounds of this instrument are so incredibly clear and transparent that sometimes while you are listening you will notice many layers one behind the other as the music plays. The bass section is big and yet perfectly clear. I would like in future to see ALL recordings featuring a piano to state exactly what kind and size it is. This recording certainly gives a credible idea of what this piano sounds like. I don't know whether Mr. Stahnke was just being modest when he said that "Sergei Rachmaninoff remains unconjured, except in treasured memory." The fact is that Mr. Stahnke has conjured Rachmaninoff about as successfully as is ever likely to be done. The result is quite a revelation. He intends to produce all of Rachmaninoff's extent piano rolls in this way.

Sergei Rachmaninoff By Kelsi Sergei Rachmaninoff was born in Semyonovo, Russia on April1, 1873. His mother was the daughter of a general, and his father was a retired wealthy, army officer. Rachmaninoff showed signs of very good music ability at age four. A suggestion of sending Sergei to the pianist Nikolay Zverev in Moscow to study the piano was suggested by Slexander Siloti, his cousin. Siloti was a well-known concert pianist and conductor. So Sergei was sent to study the piano with Zverev. He would go with Zverev to Sunday afternoon meetings. At the meetings, Rachmaninoff met many important musicians. Some of them were Peter Tchaikovsky, Anton Arensky, Sergei Taneyev, and Anton Rubinstein. Peter Tchaikovsky became his idol and influenced him most. Rachmaninoff met Alexander Scriabin through Arensky whom he studied with later. He became great friends with the great composer Scriabin. Rachmaninoff graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and received a gold medal for his one-act opera, Aleko

Alkan: Le Festin d'Esope, Barcarolle, Quasi-Faust , and Symphonie BMG High Performance (HP 09026 63310-2) Raymond Lewenthal, pianist Lewenthal started the recent revival of interest in Alkan and now I understand why. His performances are truly magnificent. They sound impossible! You can't believe that there are no other pianists playing at the same time! In fact, sometimes it's hard to believe that there isn't an entire orchestra there, the sound is so full and lush! Lewenthal brings out the best in these compositions, which is very good indeed. And the remastering is excellent, too. Even the program notes, which are by Lewenthal himself, are fascinating and extremely well written. Also on this disc is the most interesting group composition, Hexameron , by Liszt, Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Czerny and Chopin. Bach: 5 Versionen der Passacaglia BWV 582 (Signum SIG X93-00) This is a great idea, well executed: a CD with five versions of the famous "Passacaglia" by J.S. Bach. The first version is performed on a period organ by Christian Rieger. The second, a piano version by Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932) is performed by Ernst Breidenbach. Next comes a version for romantic organ by Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Johann Gottlob Topfer (1791-1870). The fourth version is for piano, four hands, by Max Reger (1873-1916). The pianists are Oliver Kolb and Ernst Breidenbach. And, finally, Leopold Stokowski's (1882-1977) orchestral transcription performed by the Frankfurt State Orchestra conducted by Nikos Athinaos.

I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

28 March 2003. It is sixty years since the death of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and my work on this homage to the master continues. I have posted a new review, rewritten five others and taken the older ones offline pending revision. Since I posted a short survey of Third Concerto recordings I have been sent numerous recommendations and recordings by friends and acquaintances, for which I am most grateful. The great performances of Mikhail Pletnev and, most of all, Walter Gieseking have changed my understanding of this evergreen masterpiece, and the survey has accordingly been removed pending revision.
Since the last update, the West has once again embraced the absurdity of war. As the more fortunate among us lie buried under an avalanche of distressing images and propaganda, one thing remains clear: our leaders can fight for a place in history, but they will always lie in the shadow of true greatness.

Accounts of Rachmaninoff's early years are (perhaps unsurprisingly) ambiguous, but the evidence points towards an unstable childhood: his parents' separation, the death of his sister and other drastic changes of circumstance must have placed considerable strain on the boy.
Musical talent ran in the family. Sergei's grandfather, Arkady Rachmaninoff, was an amateur pianist and a pupil of the Irish-born pianist and composer John Field. Rachmaninoff's father was also an amateur pianist, as was his mother who gave him his first lessons at the age of four.
Both Sergei's father and grandfather had careers in the army, and Sergei was initially expected to follow in their footsteps. Curiously, nobody in this musical family saw anything special in the boy's talent and it was left to his sisters' babysitter (!) to draw attention to it, whereupon Anna Ornatzkaya, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory was hired to teach him (he was seven years old).
Sergei appears to have liked his doting grandmother Butakova more than anyone else in his childhood. She bought a farm for the family in Borisovo, and she and Sergei often attended church services together, bringing him in contact with chants and the sound of bells that were to have such a profound influence on him.

When Bertensson and Leyda's 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of Rachmaninoff's life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him. The authors consulted many of Rachmaninoff's associates. Given full access to the Rachmaninoff Archive at the Library of Congress, they were tireless in their pursuit of privately held documents, particularly correspondence. David Cannata's new introduction summarizes what has happened in Rachmaninoff scholarship since the book was first published. Sergei Bertensson , who knew Rachmaninoff, published other works on music and film, often with a documentary emphasis.
