WMU pianist debuts at Lincoln Center in New York Sept. 7, 2000 KALAMAZOO A Western Michigan University music faculty member will be making her New York debut next week at a venue many musicians can only dream ofthe Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Lori Sims, a pianist and associate professor of music, will perform works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Robert Schumann, Beethoven and a new composition by fellow WMU music faculty member Curtis Curtis-Smith in a Saturday, Sept. 16, concert at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. Sims will premiere portions of Smith's composition "Twelve Etudes for Piano." The concert is being sponsored by a group of people in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., where Sims was a faculty member at the University of Illinois from 1995-97. Efforts to stage her New York debut began about a year ago when she performed at a benefit concert in Champaign-Urbana to raise money for the concert. "It's a big experience to have," says Sims, who just returned Monday, Sept. 4, from Germany, where she performed in Hamburg and performed and taught at a festival in Goslar. Big experiences really are nothing new to Sims. A native of Colorado, she has been turning heads in classical music in recent years. Her Lincoln Center concert comes two years after she won first prize in the prestigious Gina Bachauer Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sims also won the prize for the best performance of a work by Brahms at that international competition.

The Fourth Vladimir Horowitz International Contest of Young Pianists is over, after featuring performers in the medium and senior groups (68 contestants from eleven countries). 18 unforgettable days of a fascinating albeit very strained musical marathon. Head of the jury, composer Ivan Karabyts, is happy to note that the contest’s geography has expanded and its prestige increased. “The Ukrainian piano school was very impressively represented,” he stresses. “Now we have a whole generation of young talents, students of the Lysenko and Gliere special music colleges and Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music. A MUSICIAN MUST SPEND A LIFETIME TO PROVE HE IS BEST This year’s competition was severe. In the second round the contestants had to show academic technical merits, playing classical pieces. 25 made it to the next round in the medium group (14-19 years of age) and 22 in the senior group (19- 33). The pianists demonstrated their enviable independence of performing clichÎs and an ability to balance emotions. Many performed the most sophisticated compositions, each lasting up to fifty minutes, all showing genuine skill. And the National Philharmonic audience remained packed throughout the contest. The regular listeners gradually singled out favorites and encouraged them in every way possible. Several dramatic events took place during the contest.

Joe Giarrusso was born in Syracuse, New York and has a BS degree in Accounting from Syracuse's LeMoyne College and a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica (USM). It is here that he got the inspiration to compose. All his life he has been involved in music, from early accordion lessons in grammar school, percussion in high school band, and directing church choirs in Syracuse and in the U.S. Army. However, he started taking serious piano lessons in 1979 from Jose Bornn, also a composer. After Jose passed on, he commenced piano and theory lessons with Priscilla Pawlicki who teaches at UCLA and performs throughout Southern California. He is still taking lessons and theory from Ms. Pawlicki who has been an invaluable inspiration for Giarrusso. His first composition was written for one of his classes at USM; Suite for L.A. which consists of 5 pieces. He currently is working on 2 separate pieces; one for Cello and Piano and the other a Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano. He resides in Southern California and lives in both Los Angeles (where he has a job as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Entertainment Partners) and in Palm Springs, where many of his new compositions are being composed.

Family Ties Don't Constrict Mother-Son Team - Los Angeles Times (7/9/96)
In a classic family-business scenario, the father begs the son to join the firm, citing destiny and the woeful statistic that only 16% of family businesses make it to the third generation. The son balks, preferring to live his own life after competing with the business for his father's attention all these years. In a more modern scenario, Stefan Pollack asked his mother, Noemi Pollack, if she'd consider giving him a job at her Century City public relations and marketing firm. At first she said no. She didn't need a 21-year-old with a business degree hanging around the office. "I said, 'Most PR agencies don't have business people in here,' "Pollack recalls. "He said, 'Maybe they should.'" Intrigued, Pollack asked her son to write a strategic plan for the agency-and a job description to justify creating a position for him. Impressed with his plan to aggressively pursue new clients, she hired him eight years ago. Today, Pollack PR Marketing Group represents a varied client list, from investment bankers to makers of natural vitamins and plumbing fixtures. Mother and son stick to their strengths, Noemi focuses on writing and the creative aspects of the business. Stefan is the rainmaker and skilled at helping clients bring new products from concept to store shelves.
