http://www.robertthies.org/bio.htm
A pianist of "unerring, warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power," Robert Edward Thies captured worldwide attention in December 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the first American pianist to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn's triumph in the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
Thies has already performed with over forty orchestras including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Mexico City Philharmonic, Auckland Philharmonia, Fort Worth Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, and the National Symphony of Mexico. He has appeared in recital throughout the United States, and his concerts have been broadcast in Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Bolivia, Hungary, Mexico, and New Zealand. Upcoming engagements include appearances with the Auckland Philharmonia, Xalapa Symphony, New West Symphony, and the Pasadena Symphony.
Mr. Thies is also a dedicated chamber musician, collaborating with many eminent musicians. This past year marked the debut of the Thies Piano Quartet, comprised of violinist Roger Wilkie, cellist Cecilia Tsan, and violist Brian Dembow. He has been a guest artist with the New Hollywood String Quartet and the renowned Blair String Quartet and has worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Joel Krosnick, David Geringas, and Bernard Greenhouse. In 1995, Thies explored another area of the repertoire and studied lieder and song repertoire with Harold Heiberg at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. Freddy Kempf, Wigmore Hall, 16 January, 2000
A little controversy never did anyone any harm, and the failure of the judges at the 1998 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition to award Freddy Kempf first prize generated more publicity for him than the top prize could ever have done. He was rapturously received on his subsequent return to Russia and the 22-year-old is already in demand the world over. Unsurprisingly, for his Wigmore Hall recital on Sunday afternoon there was a long queue for returns.

INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.
