VIEWING TIPS Updated: Saturday, Apr. 28, 2001 at 17:52 CDT Triple play; With three students in this year's Cliburn, TCU's Tamas Ungar, a former refugee from communist Hungary, has become one of the world's top piano teachers By Wayne Lee Gay Star-Telegram Classical Music Critic At first, Tamas Ungar had no idea anything was amiss. The earliest hint for the 10-year-old came when he learned that classes at the special music school he attended were canceled. Later that day, a message arrived that his older brother, Ivan, would not be home for supper because the thoroughfares were blocked. But it wasn't until his father, Imre, took Tamas' hand and walked with him down Elizabeth Boulevard, a few blocks from their Budapest apartment, that he knew something much larger than a school holiday had happened. Piles of rubble smoldered in the streets. Buildings were torn open. An eerie, unnatural quiet had settled over the neighborhood. "You could see right into the buildings where the walls had been bombed," Ungar recalls. "There were bathtubs hanging in open air. There was a piano collapsed on one leg."

If your name is listed below, by now you should have received a small token of our appreciation for taking part in our annual trivia contest. The winners were randomly selected from thousands of respondents who had one of the correct answers to the question regarding a model name that contains all the vowels. The one we had in mind was Sequoia (Toyota's big SUV), but we also accepted Murciélago (Lamborghini's latest supercar) and Yukon Denali (approved on a technicality). In this space last week, I published a statement I signed along with 22 others, roughly equally divided between Democrats and Republicans, calling for a U.S. commitment to "the establishment of a peaceful, stable, united, prosperous, and democratic Iraq free of all weapons of mass destruction."      This group, now numbering 29 signers, on Friday issued a second statement, this one in support of the United States working with other nations and international organizations in rebuilding Iraq.

Three compact discs featuring Mr. Gearhart were released in 1996 on the Koch International, Centaur and Albany labels. All have been met with enthusiastic praise from the press: "Gearhart is a bold assertive player... a powerful exponent" ( Strad ), "Sensitive, intelligent playing" ( Orbis Internet ), "deeply committed and wholly convincing" ( Fanfare Magazine ). His 1998 Koch release (Quincy Porter: the unpublished manuscripts) has also received several glowing reviews, including this comment from NetRadio's Bill Parker - "Gearhart is a violinist of formidable technical skill, masterful phrasing, and total commitment." In 1999 a live performance of this material was featured on NPR's Performance Today Gearhart's chamber music background includes several years as first violinist of the Chester String Quartet which was singled out as a highlight of the 1989 American String Quartet congress. His work with the quartet culminated in a 1992 compact disc of American string quartets also on Koch International. In addition to his chamber music collaborations, Mr. Gearhart maintains a busy performance schedule as soloist and recitalist. In September 1999 he made his third consecutive appearance on the Mid-America concert series in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie with pianist John Owings.
