Entertainment, Pop Culture and Shinny Baubles, the world according to Dan. Main May 27, 2002 I wish, I wish, I wish I was rich! Trekkies Bid on the Holy Grail One rich Trekkie this summer will be able to say with confidence, "I have the conn." Captain Kirk's command chair from which he maintained "conn" (control of the bridge) was created at Desilu Culver Studios 38 years ago. It will be sold at auction in mid-June by Beverly Hills, California, dealer Profiles In History. Posted by Dan at 10:14 AM I would like one please Lend an ear: Reservoir Dogs is coming to DVD (again), more brutal than ever. Featured on the 10th anniversary special edition, due Aug. 27, are two never-seen camera angles of the infamous ear-cutting scene. Director/writer/star Quentin Tarantino had shot the scene from three angles and opted for the least gruesome of the bunch. "You don't actually see any carnage, you just hear it, which is why I've always wondered why that scene has become so memorable," says Michael Madsen, who wields the knife on a captive cop. "It's become the focal point of any conversation about Reservoir Dogs. I've made 65 films, but nobody wants to talk about anything other than that scene. They'll probably write that on my tombstone." The ear scenes (one a close-up) are just the most sensational "extras" about the film. Other extras include scenes of typical Tarantino banter; new interviews with all the principals, including one with real-life ex-con Eddie Bunker; and rare footage of key scenes rehearsed at a Sundance Directors' Lab workshop in 1991.

Israel Myers Is Dead at 93; Originated London Fog Coat
By Saul Hansell, courtesy of The New York Times
December 31, 1999
- Israel Myers, the originator of the London Fog raincoat, died on Sunday at the North Oaks retirement community in Pikesville, Md. He was 93. After making raincoats for the Army in World War II, Mr. Myers's Londontown Manufacturing Company was the first to popularize the military trench coat for civilian wear. The design and pioneering use of polyester blends helped Londontown become the dominant maker of men's coats in the United States in the 1960's and 70's. Mr. Myers, the son of a tailor, was born in Lynchburg, Va., but moved as a boy to Baltimore. He became a statewide champion in shorthand while attending Baltimore City College. Just before graduating at 17, Mr. Myers was hired as a stenographer with the Makover, Roten Company, a maker of naval officers clothing. Mr. Myers worked for that company, with increasingly more responsible jobs, while earning a law degree at the University of Maryland at night. By 1927, the company changed its name to Londontown Clothes and began to focus on expensive men's suits and coats. The company collapsed during the Depression, and Mr. Myers obtained the rights to the Londontown name by agreeing to help the creditors liquidate its assets.

Thomas gets big sendoff
to U.S. Naval Academy

Eighteen-year-old David Thomas is making himself at home at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Just before he left, family friends Martha and Herman Myers honored him with a backyard picnic. Martha and Herman's spacious backyard of their Williams Lane home filled with David's family and friends. The yard was "Southern Living"-pretty with flowers blooming around the 20-foot fishpond that David dug in 2000. Guests wandered in and out of the old pine cabin that Herman and Martha moved last year from Hartselle Tabernacle. Martha has furnished the cabin with primitive antiques and a crystal chandelier. Martha purchased the chandelier for one of her antique customers but couldn't bear to part with it. Donnie Johnson and Mike Hightower commanded the grill with assistance from Ginger Hightower. They kept the hot dogs and hamburgers sailing onto guests' plates, and Martha kept the tables full of potato salad, baked beans and chips. She also whipped up an American flag cake to complement the American flags that decorated the yard. Lots of folks congratulated David on his assignment. Among them were his parents, the Rev. Mike and Joy Thomas and brother, Daniel; grandparents Betty and Earl Thomas of Huntsville; Shelia Whitt and Bob Langley; Amy and Marlin Hood with two-month-old son Seth; Janice Brackin; Shelia Chatham; Jennifer Chatham; Taylor Chatham and guest Megan; Sue Willa Smith, Donnie Johnson and Lisa Terry; Tommy Plemons; Linda and Jack Oden; Jean and Bobby Rochester; Mary and Willie Haney; Joyce and Ken Helphand; Major (Ret.) Steven Farris; Dr. Mark and Joy Tolbert and Margaret; and Stan Addyman.

Peggy Ann Blow in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill
The Octagon, November 12, 2002 to January 5, 2003 BUY TICKETS NOW! , written by Lanie Robertson and directed by Shirley Jo Finney, takes place, as the title suggests, at Emerson's Bar & Grill-a Philadelphia nightclub that is believed to be one of the last places Holiday appeared. Dubbed "Lady Day" by legendary jazz artist Lester Young, Billie Holiday captured audiences worldwide with a charismatic personality, and a voice that to this day haunts anyone whose ears have been graced by it. This powerfully moving musical drama will feature some of Holiday's most emotionally stirring songs such as "God Bless The Child," and "Strange Fruit," which gave a poignant voice to the struggle for human rights for African-Americans. Finney promises to deliver the stories of the final moments of Holiday's life through what she calls a memoryscape-the present day reality and the world of Holiday's memory. "People always present her as a victim," says Finney. "This play will present her as a survivor. She was a product of the politics of her time." Finding someone who, like Billie, gives a voice to a yearning for love, personal fulfillment, and connects with every emotion that plays like a soundtrack of the soul, was a large order. However, Finney didn't hesitate to suggest actress/jazz singer Peggy Ann Blow. "This piece calls for someone who is layered-who has charisma, comedic timing and dramatic sensibility." Finney continues, "Peggy is a wonderful, consummate actress and jazz artist who has brought down the house in productions in which she previously sang renditions of Holiday tunes."

Violinist Andrew Manze wrote the chapter on Strings for the Baroque volume and gave a stunning performance of Biber's Passacaglia from the Rosary Sonatas on a violin of around 1700 from the Amati School. Pianist David Ward specialises in music of the Classical period and wrote the Keyboard chapter in the Classical volume. He brought his own fortepiano to the launch and gave an exquisite performance of Mozart's Fantasy in D minor Trevor Herbert provided the chapter on Wind Instruments for the Romantic volume. http://www.artsnet.org/pca/gov_awards.html
ABOUT THE PCA
Governor's Awards for the Arts Nominations were due May 3, 2002 for this year's Governor's Awards for the Arts. HISTORY A "Distinguished Pennsylvania Artist Award" was also established to be chosen by the Governor. [Note: No standard policy was established for this category, but it was generally agreed that the recipient would be a native Pennsylvanian and an artist of world renown]. Following the 1982 awards, the Hazlett awards were presented in no more than 6 disciplines, in alternating years, and architecture was added as a category. The awards were suspended in 1987 in the first year of Governor Robert P. Casey's administration. In 1988, through his cultural advisor's office, Governor Casey established "a comprehensive Governor's awards program" with the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences "to honor outstanding individual creativity and achievement, to focus attention upon the critical importance of the arts, humanities, and sciences in the life of an enlightened democratic society, and to pay tribute to Pennsylvania's rich cultural and intellectual traditions." A single award was presented in each area.
