FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A GUITAR SUMMIT WILL MEET AT BARD ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, FEATURING AN EVENING PERFORMANCE BY PETER EINHORN, AMINA CLAUDINE MYERS, AND THE THURMAN BARKER QUARTET Performances and master class, open to the community, begin at noon and continue throughout the day with guest artists and Bard faculty members ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.: The aim of the guitar summit at Bard College, according to organizer Thurman Barker, is to "bring attention to the one instrument that has deep roots in a variety of forms in American music: folk, blues, jazz, classical, rock, new age, and fusion. The summit will present a wide range of musical styles and bring attention both to the composers and performers who have brought this instrument to its prominent place in American music." The all-day event on Wednesday, April 11, is presented by the Jazz Heritage Club and Music Program at Bard and will feature a variety of music written and performed on the guitar. The public is invited to attend performances, which begin at noon, of blues, jazz, classical, rock, and new age music by regional and student musicians and groups. The summit will conclude with a special performance by featured musicians beginning at 7:00 p.m. All performances will be held in the Old Gym on the Bard College campus. A master class with Bard faculty members and guest artists will be held in Blum Hall (time to be announced). The events are free and open to the public, but a donation is suggested for the evening performance for non-Bard community members.

About My Research: I am a music consultant working as the Director of the Music Archive program of The Estate Project for Artists with AIDS. This project is dedicated to preserving and promoting the music of composers who have died from AIDS and who are living with HIV/AIDS. Currently we are gathering information on the effects of AIDS on American Music.
I am appealing to the general public and to members of the music community in particular for assistance in my research which is focused on three areas:
I - COMPOSERS WITH AIDS
Consult the list of composers that we have identified to date (below) and let me know of other composers that should be added. We are interested in all composers who have died without regard to the type of music they wrote or their level of prominence. For convenience, we have divided the names into two general fields Composers and Singer Songwriters.
We are also especially interested in making contact with composers living with HIV/AIDS so that we may assist them as needed. We will approach any referrals with discretion and confidentiality.
For each composer on our list, we want to secure, at a minimum, the following information:

http://jazzmart.com/rhythm.davmyers.htm

Dave Myers
Dave and Louis were there in the middle of it all when the music that became known as Chicago Blues was born. By the late 1940s the brothers had been recruited by the much older Arthur "Big Boy" Spires to back him at local house parties; thanks to their dad's influence, they were perfectly at ease with the down home stylings of Spires, but really got the crowds goingand sometimes left Spires in the dustwhen they'd launch into an up-tempo boogie woogie or two guitar arrangement of a current swing hit. It was while playing with Spires in the late '40s that they hooked up with a young harmonica player named Junior Wells , and then drummer Fred Below, and their now-legendary band The Aces were born.
This was the band that changed the way blues was played in Chicago. Until that time, most Chicago Blues was essentially an electrified, hopped- up version of the same music that had been played down south before WWII. The Aces turned the Chicago blues scene on its ear, playing swinging, modern and urbane ensemble music. Their music wasn't just louder than their rural predecessors, it was different. In Dave's hands, the guitar not only wove in traditional blues guitar licks, it also filled the roles of the left hand of a boogie woogie pianist, the trombones in a big band, and a second percussionist behind the drummerand all of it now blasting through a still relatively new-fangled guitar amplifier. Dave's playing formed the backbone and supplied the drive that propelled The Aces and made them unique among blues bands of their era.

Ike was born in Chicago and began working in the late 1950s at Chicago's famous Black Orchid Club. He traveled and performed with his trio until the late 1960s, when he began appearing as a solo entertainer.
Ike performed with his younger brother Freddy Cole (also a pianist and singer of international fame) in concerts during the 1980s and early 1990s. In addition, he played piano behind his niece Natalie Cole on "Route 66," one of the songs on her album "Unforgettable."
