The QEH has, mercifully, abandoned its experiment with video 'enhancement' trained onto the keyboard, but even if your seats were not at the preferred keyboard side (where the sound of a piano is often inferior!) there was no problem about 'seeing the hands' of this pianist. Olli Mustonen offered a visual show of unique self-indulgence - one wondered if a choreographer should have been listed in his CV credits. For a quiet note, his right hand may descend from above head height; describe arabesques in the air, and sometimes he flutters his fingers. Significant moments are brought to our attention by attacking the keyboard from the back of his head, at others from a bizarre gesture at the back of his neck, as if he had to brush away an irritating insect. One could only guess that all this was based upon some alternative-medicine notion of relaxation, a world away from the unostentatious poise of Sokolov for whom such antics would be anathema.

Along with the provocative Croation Ivo Pogorelich and the flamboyant Russian Arcadi Volodos, Mustonen uses the score as a springboard for his own aleatory experiments with tempo, phrasing, and dynamics. I guess Glenn Gould is the father of this eccentric school of young rebels who wilfully alienate conservative listeners, while building a small but vociferous following among the cognoscenti. Anderson, The Stations of the Sun; Grieg, Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.16; Strauss, An Alpine Symphony, Op.64 , Olli Mustonen (piano), London Philharmonic Orchestra, Daniel Harding, Royal Festival Hall, 15 November 2002 (CA)
It’s quite something for Grieg’s Piano Concerto to overshadow a bracing recent work and Strauss’s extravagant Alpine Symphony – but Olli Mustonen managed it! He did so not by shedding new light on the piece or by suggesting he had undertaken a microscopic re-evaluation of it, but by eccentrically making it up as he went along. Individuality is fine, usually welcome, but there has to be the perception that the performer has lived with the music, contemplated it, and developed his interpretation from the music itself. ‘From within’ is not a description that one could use for Mustonen’s immature playing at this concert. Should Mr Mustonen read his biography, he might like to reflect on the following: "For Mustonen to follow traditional interpretations unthinkingly is uncreative, but every bit as uncreative is the performance that seeks only to be different." In this concert, Mustonen did exactly the second half of that sentence; his crassness irked throughout as he displayed a breathtaking lack of musicianship. While it is true that earlier generations of musicians play with more freedom than we are used to today – as conveyed by so-called ‘historic’ recordings – it is rare not to appreciate an individual viewpoint even if one does not agree with it. With Mustonen, nothing was thought through or related.

Olli Mustonen, Piano / Conductor
'Olli Mustonen is a wonderful pianist, and a maddening one - to pretty much the same extent and for pretty much the same reasons. He is, as he showed all through his Carnegie Hall recital on Friday night, a master of delicate touch. His playing is always light, achieving force by insistent attack rather than weight. But the lightness can be vastly varied in colour and tone, often with spectacular control, so that, for instance, he can leap down the keyboard in octaves giving each note the same nuance, even at extreme pianissimo.'
New York Times
'There is no questioning the power of Mustonen's artistic vision... his
strongly profiled response to gesture and character - articulated with
breathtaking digital eloquence - animates this work's colourful array of Austrian, Russian, Scottish, Welsh and Irish styles with engaging spontaneity.'

20. Report On Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival 1996
olli mustonen (pianist and conductor), Virtuosi di Kuhmo. mustonen's emotionallystrong style was a positive experience. Mon, 15.7. 11.00
http://www.cis.hut.fi/~tho/classic/kuhmo96.html
Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival 1996 -
Impressions of the First Week
I was happy to win one week ticket for Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in the lottery organized by the Kuhmo Chamber Music Appreciation Society.
Kuhmo - "In the middle of nowhere"
The Spirit of Kuhmo
In the following, I quote the festival leaflet. The phrases are not "just marketing" - they are real at least as experienced by myself during the five personal visits. "The Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival is highly democratic. Not even the brightest megastar gets an easier deal. He spends the mornings teaching, the afternoons and evenings in concert, and the nights practising." "The artists usually come for the duration, spending the entire two weeks living in humble accommodation (the local school hostels), teaching and practising in the classrooms, giving concerts in the school gym, and freshening up at the sauna evenings laid on by local families. Gone is all the external glitter and glamour."
Concerts
The ticket permitted me to go to almost all concerts in the first week between 14th and 21st of July. This year the chamber music by Haydn and Mozart was in a central position. I'll describe now briefly some of the experiences I had during the week. I am not going to give full details. I'll rather concentrate on the impressions and the anecdotal remarks based on my personal likings. All the visited concerts are listed to serve as a personal diary and to give a general idea of the contents.
