After the icy chill of Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Tempest Overture, a whipping and stinging maelstrom, we hear Shostakovich’s fascinating early incidental music for Hamlet, which veers towards the grotesque and comic. A pupil of Michelangeli, the legendary Czech pianist Ivan Moravec plays one of Mozart’s most ambiguous and complex concertos, light alternating with shade, cheerfulness with a darker expression. In Stravinsky’s most popular ballet, The Firebird, a battle rages between good and evil, the glittering firebird versus the green-taloned ogre Kashchei.

Press Release No. 1 Partners of the Prague Spring 2003

We are delighted that the 2003 Festival will take place in collaboration with the Czech Ministry of Arts and Culture and that its co-organizer will continue to be the City of Prague, Capital of the Czech Republic.
Our partners will for the greater part remain as before, though talks on other possibilities are continuing. We greatly appreciate the fact that Èeská spoøitelna will also be a general partner of the 2003 Festival. Similarly, our long-term co-sponsor, Transgas, remains an official partner.
Our other partners are Subterra and the PVT companies, both as concert partners.
DaimlerChrysler Automotive Bohemia, which represents Mercedes, is also our partner, providing the official Prague Spring car.
One small change has taken place in the area of official Prague Spring hotels. Apart from the Hotel Marriot, which is now the traditional Prague Spring hotel, we shall in the course of next year have the honour of working together with the Hotel Inter-Continental as well.
Further collaboration, and it seems more widespread, will take place in 2003 with our media partners Czech Radio, the daily paper Mladá fronta Dnes, and the Seznam.cz internet provider. Talks between the Prague Spring and Czech Television are also in their advanced stages.

International Press Reviews
Radoslav Kvapil has done sterling service for the cause of Czech piano music, including a complete recording of Dvorák´s piano works. Kvapils sympathies range broadly, and if his own concert repertoire is a guide, then this series should attract anyone interested in late 19th century piano music, as well as the Czech enthusiast. Any performance needs not only energy and virtuosity, but also insight. Kvapil brings all these qualities to bear in performances which continually capture and hold the ear.
J.W. BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE (London)
Kvapil was born into the Janácek tradition. It shows in this superb disc. His romanticism is not a stylistic decision. It is an emphatic response to the music, which takes him straight to Janácek´s heart. Each tableau is unforgettably vivid. Kvapil is profoundly moving - one of the great piano records...Breathtaking.
Brian Hunt CLASSIC CD (London)
Kvapil plays this set with great understanding. He cherishes these curious reflective tonal sideslips, but also charges into the more energetic variations. His ability to characterize swiftly and surely is very necessary. Kvapil responds most vividly to the shorter pieces on this excellent record. These are interesting, intelligent and well-executed performances.
Leslie Gerber GRAMOPHONE (London)
Well-known for his "flying" interpretation of Smetana´s piano music, Kvapil is a pianist with a lively, rapid interpretation, whose repertoire is very different from that of the majority of career-minded pianists.

    Moravec rules!
My first recording of the "big three" Beethoven Sonatas (the Moonlight, Pathetique and Appasionata) was Rudolf Serkin on Columbia Masterworks. I was encouraged to purchase it over the recording by Rubinstein on RCA because of Serkin's reputation as a Beethoven specialist. Although one cannot argue with Serkin's playing, I later learned that Rubinstein had special insights to bring to this music and thus I eagerly awaited its release in CD format so I could add it to my collection. The "big three" don't fill out the CD format well enough in terms of minutes used, so it is now customary to add "Les Adieux" to the program. Thus we have a collection of Beethoven's most famous "named" piano sonatas (well, of course, this leaves out other worthy entries including the "Tempest", "Waldstein" and "Hammerklavier" sonatas). The Rubinstein recording, and the Moravec recording, consist of these "big four". In a head-to-head comparison between Moravec's recording and Rubinstein, I surprisingly came away prefering Moravec's in all four sonatas. This was no mean feat, as I had come to appreciate Rubinstein's recording. Moravec is an exciting pianist. His playing is compelling, dynamic, and attentive to detail. This recording now ranks as my favorite collection of these favorite sonatas.

Manificent playing of great music at a bargain price
This is was the first Moravec recording that I purchased. I bought it despite some reservations by a friend who had heard the Vox LPs and whose opinions on music I take very seriously. He changed his tune when he heard this recording. Where should I begin? Moravec's technique is fabulous. His articulation is crisp, and his tone is gorgeous. What's more, his personality is expressed here not by showboating but by his unerring ability to bring out the characteristics of Debussy and Chopin. With Debussy, the shocking dissonances are made clear but, at the same time, are sweetened by a lucious tone and a sensitivity to Debussy's underappreciated tunefulness. In the Chopin, Moravec's precise technique is coupled with his sensitivity to rhythm so that the different types of pieces (mazurkas, waltzes, polonaises) are indeed unmistakably different, each type pleasing in very different way.
And all this for (the price).

    (http://www.artssf.com/sfs0526.html) with a grain of salt. I wasn't there,
but given the critic's general opinion of Moravec as "an unexciting
pianist", Moravec fans like me should not be disheartened by Hertelendy's
boredom at the concert. Readers should perhaps be grateful that he roused
himself to attend the concert at all. Of course, a critic should call 'em like he sees 'em. But the review also is
wrong on the facts: Moravec did not "emigrate from Communist Czechoslovakia very early on" - he has never lived anywhere else but Prague. The fact that he steadfastly refused to join the Communist party, suffering the consequences for himself and his career, is no longer a secret. One of the consequence may be enduring surly and uninformed reviewers.
