Leah Adler: Steven Spielberg's Mother
“I didn’t know he was a genius. Frankly,
I didn’t know what the hell he was.”
Page II of II ““We were poor,” she adds, “but there was no depression in our house. We didn’t know what we didn’t have. And we liked what we did have. I remember going to bed thinking, ‘Wow, I have new shoes,’ and jumping out of bed in the middle of the night to look at my new shoes. Now that I can have everything, I’ve lost that.”
Leah remembers a time when the family barely ate for several days. Finally, her father was able to earn ten dollars buying and selling old jewelry. “He came home with ten dollars and said, ‘We’re going on vacation.’ And we did. That’s faith.”
Life gave Leah another advantage. “I was different looking, but I never wanted to change. If I had a tiny pug nose maybe I wouldn’t have had to develop a personality. But, instead, I learned to play the piano. I was somebody. I loved my life, and I believed in me.”
Leah studied to become a concert pianist, but she gave up that ambition when she married Arnold Spielberg, an engineer, and moved with him from Ohio to Arizona.

Behind The Cheese:
What Really Makes Lounge Against The Machine Swing
By Poizen Ivy The gimmick of taking an existing genre of music and performing it in a different style is nothing new. Steve Allen did it during the "Golden Age" of television. Bill Murray's alter-ego, Nick The Lounge Singer, crooned his way through "Saturday Night Live". Black Velvet Flag shook up the Cocktail Nation of the '90s. Now the torch song has been reignited by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine "I'm a big fan of any irony," states Mark Jonathan Davis, better known by his musical moniker Richard Cheese. "It's the wrong thing to do and I enjoy doing the wrong thing." Davis is an unlikely and rather reluctant rock star. During high school, he worked at a hobby store warehouse and passed the time by singing radio hits in the style of Frank Sinatra. In 1994, while working on Kevin and Bean's morning radio show on Los Angeles' KROQ, he created the character of Paul Talbert, the 55-year-old intern who recorded his own "retro" versions of alternative hits. Davis eventually started his own company producing television jingles and commercials, but still wanted to take his idea further and put out an album. With backing from Oglio Records, Lounge Against The Machine was recorded with studio musicians and released in 2000.

In a U of L class or onstage, pianist Tian Ying is a 'master'
By ANDREW ADLER Jan. 27, 2002
The Courier-Journal Tian Ying worked with Shabnam Cyrus during a master class at the University of Louisville last October.
Photo by PAM SPAULDING The scene was Comstock Concert Hall at the University of Louisville School of Music. The situation was a master class, in which piano students would be selected to play for a few minutes and then be critiqued. The "master" was Tian Ying. Slim, elegantly dressed and possessed of a strikingly serene manner, Ying listened absorbing, analyzing, considering how best to respond and encourage. Often, he had to probe. "I'M A LITTLE LOST in terms of the overall picture," he told one student, speaking in almost a singsong whisper. "The overall picture is very beautiful, but I'm not seeing three dimensions. The most important point is how you think. Try to imagine what the left hand would be doing . . . then the right hand. Then your fingers will be a little more understanding." Ying has been leading these master classes for several seasons, part of a visiting-artist residency underwritten by music school benefactor Margaret Comstock. Over the last decade Ying, 33, has performed with the Louisville Orchestra (under Lawrence Leighton Smith) and played in Louisville in recital.

Bob McHugh Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Column: New York at Night
David Adler February 2002 New York @ Night Archive November November October September ... July New York @ Night: February 2002 By David R. Adler Electric Bop Jim Rotondi and David Hazeltine certainly aren’t known as fusion players, but they do have an affinity for the electric music that Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and Miles Davis set about creating in the early 70s, on albums like Red Clay and Fat Albert Rotunda. Paying tribute to that classic yet frequently maligned sound, the trumpeter and pianist co-led an electric quintet at Smoke. Hazeltine played Rhodes, the signature instrument of the style, and one that has been enjoying a significant comeback in acoustic jazz. One usually sees Barak Mori, the young Israeli bassist, clad in a suit and clutching an upright in Eric Reed’s band; here he was dressed down and playing an ultra-tight Fender J. Guitarist Greg Skaf and drummer Vincent Ector completed the band, which played Hazeltine’s "period" arrangements of "Love for Sale" and "Out of This World," as well as an epic "Watermelon Man" and a couple of Hazeltine originals. Rotondi doubled on synth; his echo effects on trumpet were a bit much at times, but they were kept to a minimum. There was almost a "garage band" feel to this project: the music was quite polished, but it came across as an off-the-cuff jam among musicians who normally busy themselves with other matters.

"Randall Scarlata is an intelligent and communicative singer. In songs of Schumann and Schubert his delivery of the text was vivid, and this was not just a matter of clear diction but of a compelling desire to bring texts to life. His voice is hearty and robust, especially in the lower range, and his lovely, soft singing in high-lying phrases was poignant."

The restaurant could only be in California: shingled on the outside, kosher on the inside, it is the unlikely domain of Leah Adler, a petite blonde godsend whose responsibilities include planning the menus, greeting the guests, and whenever her son has a new movie out hanging the posters.
The movie posters nine so far are Leah’s way of telling anyone who doesn’t know it that her son is Steven Spielberg. Four of the ten biggest grossing pictures of all time (Jaws, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, and its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) are heralded on Leah Adler’s wall. Together they have made Steven the most popular movie director ever.
Leah is right to show off. Among the reasons for Spielberg’s success are his incredible energy, his unselfconscious sense of humor, and his youthful, wide-eyed innocence qualities he obviously inherited from Leah. Visiting her at the Milky Way, I feel as if I am meeting the inspiration for a thousand Spielberg movies. Leah projects the same rapturous naivete as Steven’s protagonists as she ricochets from table to table, joyously igniting conversations in every corner of the room. And when the phone rings, Leah positively leaps across the room to get it.
"The restaurant," Leah says, "is like a stage. I feel like I’m opening in a play every night. I thrive on the whole thing."
