Pianist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

Johannes BRAHMS
Piano Concerto No.1 in D minor An Inktroduction by Johann D'Souza Jump to Recommended Recordings Very few piano concertos begin with a marking like "Maestoso". One which comes to mind is Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto , which is marked "Moderato". I point this out because commonly there is normally an "Allegro" (fast) first, followed by a slow movement and then ending with a relatively fast movement. Brahms on the other hand opts for "Maestoso-poco piu moderato" (majestically, a "little more moderato" - whatever that means...) and an Adagio second movement followed by another relatively moderate third movement Rondo (Allegro non troppo-piu animato-Tempo I) It is the marking of "Maestoso" in the first movement that I feel Brahms must have carefully picked to express his feelings of grief. The interplay of the woodwind against a backdrop of syncopated strings with sudden, fortissimo tutti entries strengthen this impression at this tempo, compared to a faster pace. Brahms wrote two piano concertos: the first in D minor and the second in B-flat major. Both are rather lengthy, like a symphony - roughly in the region of 50 minutes apiece. His Second Concerto is equally interesting with a distinct solo passage in the third movement played by cello and accompanied by the piano, something seldom seen. Written originally as a sonata for two pianos it was then turned into a symphony which finally found itself becoming a concerto. It begins with a very strong tutti reminiscent like that of an orchestral tutti . Its premiere was met with mixed feelings because of its size and the intensity needed to pull it off. The work was dubbed a "symphony with piano obligato" by the critics at the first performance.

http://www.mirror.org/madrigal/dischubert2.html
1) Songs Without Words; Mischa Maisky / Deutsche Grammophon ($23.00) Order # SH01 With almost six hundred units sold, this is the biggest selling Deutsche Grammophon CD title in the Madrigal's twenty-three year history. Cellist Mischa Maisky studied all six hundred Schubert lieder before selecting just fifteen to be transcribed for cello and piano. The result is the only recording of Schubert transcriptions ever made, and a disc that is all but completely irresistible to anyone who has ever loved the cello's uniquely expressive sound. Very strongly recommended, this exceptional disc continues to draw rave reviews from literally everyone who has heard it. 2) Impromptus, Hungarian Melody; Alfred Brendel / Philips Solo ($18.00) Order # SH02 By far Schubert's most popular piano works, the impromptus have been recorded, and recorded very well by such keyboard luminaries as Murray Perahia, Maria Joao Pires, Mitsuko Uchida, Radu Lupu, Wilhelm Kempff and others. This mid-priced 1972 Philips reissue by Alfred Brendel ranks alongside the best. In addition to splendid performances of the impromptus, it includes an extremely rare recording of the composer's Hungarian Melody. The latter is barely three minutes in length and all but completely unknown, yet is surely among the most beautiful of all Schubert's keyboard compositions. The ongoing mystery and speculation that will ever surround Schubert's Unfinished Symphony would hardly seem to matter at all - if it were just another symphony. But there's the rub. More so than anyone else, Schubert himself had to know that those opening two movements surpassed by far any of his previous orchestral works, as indeed to this day they surpass the opening two movements of virtually every other symphony written since. Notwithstanding its status as one of the greatest of all symphonies, it is perhaps appropriate that there is no one CD version of the Unfinished that clearly stands out above all the others. If not definitive, this 1978 performance directed by the enigmatic Carlos Kleiber is at the very least extremely powerful and compelling. It's guaranteed to leave an immediate and lasting impression.

http://www.mirror.org/madrigal/dischumann2.html
1) Piano Concerto (Grieg concerto); Radu Lupu, Andrew Previn, London Symphony Orch / Decca Legends ($18.00) Order # SC01 Schumann's best-loved masterpiece has been recorded by many of the world's great pianists, but for my taste the best of the lot is this magnificent 1972 collaboration between Radu Lupu and Andrew Previn. Moreover, Lupu's electrifying account of the Grieg A Minor Concerto is likewise as good or better than anything else on disc. With excellent sound and the value of mid-price, this has to be among the best bargain piano concerto recordings on the entire classical market. Very strongly recommended. 2) Piano Concerto (Grieg Concerto); Murray Perahia, Colin Davis, Bavarian Radio Symphony / Sony ($22.00) Order # SC02 Perahia's Schumann is undeniably magnificent from first note to last, but make sure you're looking for this 1985 coupling with the Grieg A Minor Concerto. Why? Because about five years ago, Perahia inexplicably re-recorded the Schumann concerto with Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic, producing a brutally dull, ponderous performance that is one of the very few major disappointments of this artist's career. By way of contrast, this collaboration with Colin Davis has established itself among Perahia's more popular Sony titles. His Grieg may not quite match the fire on the Lupu disc above, but this is still a most impressive coupling that is sure to impress any of this great artist's many admirers. 3) Cello Concerto, Fantasiestucke, Romance, 5 Stucke in Volkston; Mischa Maisky, Martha Argerich, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra / Deutsche Grammophon ($23.00) Order # SC03

Vladimir Mischouk, 22 year old pianist from St.-Petersburg, The All-Russian Piano Competition Laureate in Moscow and The Brussels International Competition Laureate, did everything in his power to produce a prolonged exquisite impression. Brilliance and concentration are the hallmark of his playing enabling these two predominant qualities to merge into one complete majestic whole''. B.Schultse

''Mischouk's playing is absolutely free from any artificiality or complications and despite his age is amazingly mature possessing the best qualities of the Russian Pianist.
