Sol Joseph, longtime S.F. Conservatory prof, dies at 90
DAN PINE Bulletin Staff Music lovers in the Bay Area have lost a local treasure. Sol Joseph, 90, longtime professor of music theory at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and former conductor of the Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco, died Dec. 3 after a long illness. "Sol was the sweetest and gentlest man," remembers Renee Enteen, who sang with the Jewish Folk Chorus when Joseph was the ensemble's conductor in the mid-1980s. "He was humble and soft, but a great musician." Born to Ukrainian immigrants in 1912, Joseph earned a master's degree in music from the University of Chicago in his hometown. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, staying on for a time in post-war Germany. In 1948, Joseph moved to San Francisco with his wife, Belle, and young son, Steven. Aided by the support of Bay Area classical music pioneers Maidie Bacon, Lillian Hodgehead and Ada Clement, Joseph joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory in 1948. There he taught theory, counterpoint, harmony and music literature. He also served as acting director and conductor of the Conservatory Orchestra until his retirement in 1977, when he was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree.

A Brand New Star- Nativity Play: More details
Thank you for your interest in the Nativity Play "Brand New Star".It is a very simple short script with narration telling the traditional Christian Nativity story.
I have included page 1 of the script so you can get an idea! There are eight modern original songs, as listed below. Schools sometimes add their own selection of other traditional carols to produce a longer concert. Otherwise, the production is about 40 minutes in length. Last time I staged it in my own school it was performed by 85 children including choir, but it can be performed by a group as small as 15. (Cast List below)
The package contains script, CD, and basic sheet music. The CD contains two copies of each song, one with vocals for rehearsing, one "backing track" for performance. Therefore no musical ability is needed, but you will need a CD player and microphone for the most effective delivery. (Alternatively, some schools use their own pianist or organist etc.)

JASPER WOOD’S “HEIFETZ CELEBRATION” A BIG HIT IN AMERICAN MARKET Violin virtuoso Jasper Wood's past year has been one of much success. From a recent launch of a new CD recording, a recording of the music of Saint-Saëns with pianist Jamie Parker, to the critically acclaimed Heifetz celebration recital Jasper Wood has been entertaining audiences the world over. Jasper has a unique style and musicianship that can only be fully captured in a live performance. Audiences and critics have all agreed that Jasper Wood is one of the finest ‘Generation X’ violinists of our time.
The 2001 Heifetz celebration recital tour was such a hit that we have held it over for another year. The recital combines some of Jascha Heifetz's long lost treasures with some of his more famous transcriptions for violin and piano. This is combined with some standard repertoire that Heifetz enjoyed performing throughout his career. The final product is a perfectly balanced program which gives the audience a feeling of complete fulfillment.
Jasper Wood continues to be a cutting edge violinist with his unique approach towards repertoire. A fan of music of our time, Jasper Wood is active in the commissioning and performing of new music. 2002 includes two pieces written especially for Jasper Wood by composers Glenn Buhr and Andrew MacDonald.

    • In English
      • The Fifth Concerto's sobriquet, "Emperor," dates from Beethoven's time, but not from Beethoven himself, for he very rarely gave nicknames to his works. Besides, since the composer had little regard for emperors, he would be unlikely to name one of his own works for a class of people he generally disliked. So where did the name originate? Evidence is unclear, but it seems that the "Emperor" title was the idea of Johann Baptist Cramer, a German-born, London-based pianist and publisher. Beethoven and Cramer were life-long friends, and Beethoven reportedly regarded his lesser-known colleague as the greatest pianist of their day. If Cramer did indeed crown the "Emperor" with its regal title, then it seems proof of Beethoven's friendship that he permitted the choice, for he rarely let anyone meddle with his music.

    Professor of Urology, Emeritus
"Had he been a soldier, he would have been General.
Had he been a politician, he would have been Senator.
Had he been a nobleman, he would be have been King." Joe Kaufman was the most distinguished urologist of his day. He was a complex, multifaceted individual, who was a brilliant physician and surgeon, a great teacher, and a personal inspiration to all who knew him. In any room of people operating room, lecture hall, athletic field, or social gathering his presence was the dominant one. He influenced the lives of thousands of patients, trainees, co-workers, and students during a UCLA career which spanned nearly 40 years. During those years, both UCLA and the specialty of urology changed from struggling start-ups into important forces. No individual did more to lead these transitions than Joe Kaufman. Joe was effective because of his innate leadership abilities, and also because he was a striking physical presence. Tall, dark, and handsome, he had a booming voice and a commanding demeanor. He was an extremely gifted communicator, clever and funny, both with the spoken and written word. In his many areas of endeavor, he exuded a self-confidence, which assured the best possible result. He was often called a "Renaissance Man" because he was talented in many different fields.

    nee: Joseph Francis Burke
    Instrument: Vibes
    Theme Song: Blue Sonata
    Overview
Burke had learned to play the piano and violin while still a child, and was playing in dance bands while still in school. For about one-quarter of the century, he was a bandleader and active arranger for major recording studios, where he backed leading singers such as Ella Fitzgerald; Mel Torme, and Frank Sinatra. Sonny formed his band while in Duke University. John Hammond, the music critic, encouraged him to bring the band to NYC, where they wound up in Roseland ballroom. Sonny handled the Vibes and then began arranging for the band. Sonny inherited the Sam Donahue orchestra when Gene Krupa took Sam Donahue away, but when San Donahue left Krupa, he asked for his old band back. The orchestra took a vote and Sam got the band back. Sonny left the band and started a very successful career as west coast studio and TV arranger/conductor, as well as being chief arranger for such bands as Jimmy Dorsey and Charles Spivak. He was musical director for Warner Bros. Records and for Reprise Records, where he was responsible for Frnak Sinatra's records. Later he headed his own Daybreak Records company. Sonny died in 1979.

    http://www.netporch.com/jcroce/q&a1.html
Now to the answers! Question: What is the "One thing I bet you didn't know about Jim Croce?" from Sal's personal experience. Answer: Perhaps the most interesting thing you probably didn't know about Jim Croce was that, for a short time, he actually backed up Maury on lead guitar. This was when Jim had moved back from New York and was living in Lyndell, PA. Maury had an album out called "Gingerbreadd", and Jim was recovering from the New York experience. Maury's album didn't get promoted either, so he wasn't able to get many gigs, but once I got him together with Jim something clicked, and Jim was so impressed with Maury's music he adapted his guitar style so they could play a few gigs together. Q: How did he know Maury? Did he have any clue their combination would produce the kind of music it did? A: I met Maury while teaching Communications at Glassboro State College in New Jersey. He was a Music Major from Trenton, N.J., and was a classically trained pianist who had taught himself to play guitar. I was so impressed with his music I left teaching to manage him. Once he and Jim started playing together it wasn't long before the roles switched and Maury started backing Jim on lead guitar. I knew this was a very special collaboration, and the music changed dramatically. Q: Did he remember the first song he heard from the Croce/Muehleisen combination? How did he react? Did he notice a "difference"?
