(An American in Paris, 1951) I envy people who drink at least they know what to blame everything on. Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, and so am I. I am no more humble than my talents require. There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line. A pun is the lowest form of humor when you don't think of it first. He studied piano with Sigismund Stojowski and composition with Schoenberg, but his close friendship with Gershwin was the determining factor in his career; he became one of the foremost Gershwin interpreters and an occasional composer. David Raksin Remembers his Colleagues
Alfred Newman The story of Alfred Newman's life is one of those rags to riches tales that are supposed never to happen outside the novels of Horatio Alger or the wistful fantasies of children. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1901, the eldest of ten children. The family was terribly poor, but somehow the mother was able to get piano lessons for her six-year-old son, for twenty-five cents that's per lesson, of course. The teacher was a house painter by trade, and the boy quickly outgrew his tutelage and progressed to a scholarship with a professional. A year later he gave his first recital, and soon some kind friends brought him to the attention of the great Polish pianist, Sigismond Stojowski, who offered him a scholarship. Before long, Alfred had won a silver medal and a gold medal in a competition; among the judges were the German conductor Karl Muck and the renowned composer/ pianist Ferruccio Busoni. But, prodigy or not, there was no escaping hard reality: Al's father could not find work, and the boy had to earn a living for his family. Once again friends intervened, and he found a job as piano soloist at the Strand theatre in New York City. He was now thirteen.

Metropolitan News-Enterprise Thursday, August 15, 2002 Page 18 REMINISCING (Column) Oscar Levant: Early-Night Talk Show Host By ROGER M. GRACE Yesterday marked 30 years since Oscar Levant died. Levant was an internationally known figure—but here in L.A., he’s probably best remembered as the spontaneous, if not erratic, host of local talk shows. It was a coup for KCOP, Channel 13, to sign Levant in 1958 to appear on a twice-a-week live program, interviewing and pontificating in the early evenings. Levant had been at one time the highest paid concert pianist in the nation. He was a composer; author of an autobiography, “A Smattering of Ignorance” (1940); and an actor high in the credits in movies such as “An American in Paris” (in which he played every instrument in the orchestra in a fantasy sequence) and “Band Wagon.” In radio days, he was a regular panelist on “Information Please,” and accompanied Al Jolson on the piano and engaged in repartee with him on the “ Kraft Music Hall.” And he was a wit extraordinaire, coming up with such one-liners as “Every time I look at you I get a fierce desire to be lonesome” and “What the world needs is more geniuses with humility, there are so few of us left.” A genius he was—and humility was not among his virtues. He once remarked, “I am no more humble than my talents require.” When he began his career as a local TV host

Oscar Levant
Born Dec 27 1906
Died Aug 14 1972
Oscar Levant had a unique career. To quote an essay by Dixie Burge, Oscar Levant flourished as (and subsequently gave up each, one by one) gifted composer, concert pianist, radio personality, movie star, successful recording artist, best-selling author, talk-show host and quiz show panellist
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Levant composed and performed an eclectic range of popular and classical music. One bizarre highlight was the composition of a 15 minute opera, for, all of things, a Charlie Chan film. Well, to be fair, it was Charlie Chan at the Opera
A minor entry in the catalogue was the score for the Ginger Rogers movie In Person in 1935. This was his only work with Dorothy Fields who wrote the lyrics for three Levant melodies. All three songs are currently available on recordings by Bobby Short, Peter Mintun and Kay Thompson.

Ezra Levant is no Oscar Levant Ezra Levant, who suddenly caved in and abjectly surrendered his Alliance candidacy in Calgary Southwest to his leader Stephen Harper, is no Oscar Levant. Oscar Levant, the legendary concert pianist and wit of books, movies and American TV panel shows, always left everybody laughing at his dry, acerbic wit which put down everybody and mostly himself. What was good for the goose was good for the gander. Levant, a lawyer, threatened to sue Chuck Strahl, then an Alliance MP, for disparaging comments. But it’s not in the courts that Ezra Levant has made his mark. It is in politics that he’s unique and a rising star. To be so charismatic and to be so Jewish in Calgary is a tale worth exploring in some depth. Alberta was not always hospitable to members of what John Diefenbaker always called “the Hebraic Persuasion.” A dislike of Jews and a belief in an international Jewish banking conspiracy were staples of Social Credit theory as practised by premiers ‘Bible Bill’ Aberhart and Ernest Manning, Preston’s father. Edith Gostick, a Calgary Social Credit member, was an avowed anti-Semite; her son Ron was for many years the publisher of the anti-Semitic Canadian Intelligence Service.

D.O.B.: December 27, 1906 (Pittsburgh, PA) D.O.D.: August 12, 1972 (Beverly Hills, CA) Cause of Death: Heart Attack Location: Westwood Memorial; Sanctuary of Love Biography: Oscar Levant is best known for his wry, sarcastic wit. Levant co-starred in the movie "An American in Paris," was a talented pianist, a close friend of George Gershwin, had his own early talk show on local TV, and was the man who coined the term "Tinseltown" for Hollywood. When he hosted "The Oscar Levant Show" on KCOP-TV, which was sponsored by Philco, he once got up and told his audience not to buy the company's TV sets, and predicted that he would be fired from KCOP. He was. He also predicted that he would be hired by rival KHJ (now KCAL), because "they'll take anybody." Composed: "Made for Each Other" (1939) "Street Girl" (1929)

Garnering eight Oscar nominations, this sparkling, multi-faceted musical went on to win Best Picture, Best Score (Musical), Best Writing (Story and Screenplay), Best Cinematography (Color), Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Color) and Best Costume Design (Color). Scripted by Alan Jay Lerner, directed by Vincente Minnelli and featuring the incomparable words and music of Ira and George Gershwin, An American in Paris is "one of the all-time great musical treats" (Video Review's Best on Home Video). Gene Kelly stars as Jerry Mulligan, a carefree young artist in post-WW II Paris. In her spectacular film debut, Leslie Caron is Lise Bourvier, a lonely French shopgirl engaged to marry a successful entertainer - unless Jerry can convince her otherwise! From their first on-screen meeting to the spectacular ballet finale, Kelly and Caron are superb. Oscar Levant Life Photo Gallery Home Page Oscar Levant Life Levant was studying with Martin Miessler, a graduate of the Leipzig Conservatory who specialized in the Czerny piano method. He began work with the well-regarded piano teacher Zygmunt Stojowski (1869-1946), a compatriot and disciple of Paderewski, and himself a student of Zelenski, Diémer, and Delibes Here began his first appreciation of Broadway's glamour, its characters and allure, and an early career as pit, nightclub, and restaurant pianist. In 1926, he toured London in cabaret; in 1929, he first travelled to Los Angeles, so to join the burgeoning group of New York composers and performers assigned to give film a musical voice. It was through composer-arranger Robert Russell Bennett that Levant returned to the concert stage. He was just 24 and a year later he sat with Gershwin , playing second keyboard in a two-piano version of the Second Rhapsody for conductor Arturo Toscanini. In 1932, unannounced, he turned to serious composition; he began work on what would become his Sonatina for Piano. Hearing the first movement
