23. Angela Lear Enshrines All That Is Best In Chopin Playing. THE
angela lear gave her first important public concert at the age of twelve in the whowas a violinist and close friend of the great pianist Benno Moiseiwitsch
http://angelalear.tripod.com/chopin.html
"Angela Lear enshrines all that is best in Chopin playing." THE REVIEWS "...Chopin held strong opinions about the performance of his music and the directions he left in his manuscripts are so specific that it’s astonishing how far modern performance has departed from his stated intentions. Most pianists over-dramatise his music, playing it too loudly and too fast, with scant attention to phrasing and dynamics and with inappropriate pedalling. Inaccuracies have crept into some of the more readily available printed editions. Chopin experts have long sought to remedy the situation and to recapture an authentic style of playing – among them Angela Lear. Her Chopin alongside other performances, even by some of the most respected pianists, is a revelation… …hear what Chopin really intended."
BBC Music Magazine "...Her Chopin recitals were altogether exceptional for perfect interpretation and maximum faithfulness to Chopin’s intentions. They will stay forever in the memory. Chopin’s music is not just music to delight or charm the ear – but more than that, to enter the spirit and touch the soul of the listener. It is poetry which expresses itself in sound as the poet expresses in words. Angela Lear made the piano speak – creating wonderful sounds from the ‘magic-box’ around which she united the friends of Chopin." (translation from French)
Le Matin "...(Angela Lear’s) perfect rhythmic regularity produces the basis for the structural development of the Chopin works, particularly noticeable in her remarkable Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise… …the interpretation of this work, in its perfection, is close to the reference version of Michelangeli." (translation from French)

    Notes on Interpreting Chopin
    By Angela Lears
CHOPIN'S MUSIC HAS ALWAYS posed a challenge to pianists. His compositions have retained a universal popularity and continue to be performed in virtually all corners of the world. They have been recorded and rerecorded in their thousands, so Chopin is apparently 'well-represented' - but has the challenge to his interpreter ever been successfully met? To gain further insight into his unique musical language and stylistic practices it is essential to comprehend as far as possible his expressed intentions. Our knowledge and appreciation of this most elusive and poetic of composers is greatly enriched by the combined study of not only his original manuscripts and related material (i.e. draft scores, early editions and annotated scores), but also the many statements made by his associates, friends and pupils who knew his playing and teaching principles. in addition to the considerable amount of general correspondence, reviews and reports of his concerts are revealing, although not always laudatory, especially from avid supporters of the 'piano pounders', as Chopin called them. To this list I feel it essential to include Polish folkmusic, the wonderful songs and dances, and the historical development of the Polonaise, Rondo, Krakowiak and Mazur. Most of us lead busy lives so is it really necessary to undertake the timeconsuming task of such studies? To answer that question so often addressed to me I would like to cite just one example of the wide disparities that exist between Chopin's expressed intentions and the interpretative approach pianists commonly adopt (including many who profess faithfulness to the text) when playing his famous 'Black Keys' Study in G flat major, Op. 10 No.5:

“The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving.” Oliver Wendell Holmes Dear Music Lovers, The tragic and unforgettable events of September 11 th shocked the entire world! The gray cloud of sadness has spread over all humankind. Our world of understanding and tolerance, the world in which we used to live in peace and in comfort, suddenly has been awakened to a brutal reality. However, life has to go on—we have to continue working on our charitable endeavors, which are more necessary than ever. We are looking forward to a better tomorrow with optimism and strongly believe that the values we cherish will prevail in the face of brutality and terror. And we will not deprive our audiences from listening to the inspiring music of Chopin! We will play the music. We will continue our performances and will keep bringing joy and harmony back to the lives of our friends and members. And we will continue our mission of helping young talented American pianists, who now need our assistance even more. In this issue of our magazine we present another article on Ignacy Jan Paderewski, commemorating the 60

    "KING LEAR" COMING TO CLEMSON
Clemson Shakespeare Festival IX begins with 8 p.m. performances of "King Lear" Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the university's Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. "King Lear," recognized as one of the finest plays in dramatic literature and among the very best of Shakespeare's tragedies, was first performed at the Royal Court of King James I on Dec. 26, 1606. The play brings to life the brilliance of Shakespeare's understanding of the universal human condition. The Clemson show will be performed by the Aquila Theatre Company, a large company composed of actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Wales. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17.50 for senior citizens and $6 for youth. The performance also is supported by the Southern Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The theme for Clemson University's ninth Shakespeare festival is, "Writing and Performing History." The series of programs will be critiquing notions of history in the West while examining how Shakespeare "plays" or "performs" British history in three of his great "chronicle" plays: King Lear, Richard II and Henry V. Additional festival events are scheduled for March 5-10. For more information about "King Lear" or the festival, call the Brooks Center box office at 656-7787 (M-F, 1-5 p.m.).
