Chamber Music Magazine A Publication of Chamber Music America April 1998, Volume 15, Number 2 American Ensemble Chamber Music News from THE MUSIC OF POLITICS Concurrent with "Eye of the Storm," an exhibit examining the art of conscience and social commentary from 1930 through 1970, the Minneapolis Weisman Art Museum and the ensemble Zeitgeist explore music as political statement (March 2) with informal discussion and performances featuring music by composer Frederic Rzewski. Zeitgeist ("Spirit of the times") was founded in 1977 and has presented nearly 100 world premieres and collaborated with composers such as Harold Budd, John Cage, and LaMonte Young. Members Tom Linker (keyboards), Heather Barringer and Jay Johnson (percussion), and Michael Lowenstern (woodwinds) will collaborate with Terry Riley (April 25 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis). A program of works by Barbara Benary, Daniel Lentz, and Lowenstern (May 17 at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis) will include winning entries from the fourth Annual Zeitgeist Song Contest. PIFFARO The Stadtpfeiffer of Holzweg TRAMPLER TRIBUTE IN NYC Friends, colleagues, and fans of the late violist Walter Trampler, who died on September 28, will gather for a musical tribute the morning of March 19 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. Under the artistic direction of Charles Wadsworth, pianist and founding artistic director of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the program will feature masterworks of the viola chamber music repertoire by Bach, Dvorak, Mozart, Stravinsky, and Simon Bainbridge. Speakers will include Bainbridge, Wadsworth, and Robert Mann. Performers include Misha Amory, James Buswell, Timothy Eddy, Chris Finckel, John Gibbons, Ani Kavafian, Mary Nessinger, Daniel Panner, Samuel Rhodes and members of the Juilliard Quartet, Marcus Thompson, and Pierre-Henry Xuereb.
