Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was arguably the defining figure of twentieth-century pianism. In terms of aristocratic purity and effortless technical poise only Sergei Rachmaninoff and the tragically short-lived Dinu Lipatti can be mentioned in the same breath. Yet there are those who remain resolutely unmoved by the great Italian, blaming him for the relatively cool interpretative stance favoured by a multitude of contemporary pianists, most notoriously his erstwhile pupil, Maurizio Pollini. It is a great pity that Michelangeli didn't record more Schubert. It would have been fascinating to hear to what extent his lightning reflexes might have illuminated the notoriously awkward pianistic terrain of the

[To Bob Heath] In my opinion the text of "Bist Du bei mir" is not odd! It is about love which does not end with the dead of the beloved.
Michael Zapf wrote (November 5, 2000):
The "be-thou-with-me" thread is gone from the archive, so I have to re-enter it for this message. I asked Chris Hogwood who is heading a team that is sorting the Kiev discovery, whether the Stoelzel song is amongst the lot, and he came back stating "The answer is that I don't as yet know, but am waiting for a copy of the catalogue to arrive. Reviewing Grante's recording of the Chopin/Godowsky Etudes, Gramophone said, "Few pianists would or could take on this assignment. The difficulties are outlandish and immense, yet Carlo Grante's surpassing ease and aristocratic musicianship remain unruffled and superb... These records seem ripe for selection among the most outstanding of the year."
The periodical Classical Piano hailed Grante as "One of the two main pianistic discoveries of 1993..."; while CD Review said in 1994 "He copes with the unspeakably demanding technical requirements of Godowsky's writing as if its difficulties didn't exist (as for him they obviously don't." And Fanfare called Grante in 1994, "A pianistic superman... and certainly, an artist one is avid to become more acquainted with." "In the seventeen-minute-long 1928 Passacaglia, a massive set of variations on the opening theme of Schubert's Unfinished, I particularly appreciated the stormy manner in which Grante treated the variation that so much resembles Der Erlkonig."

#1 keyboardist, Green Dolphin Internet Poll, April 98 Hyperlink: http://www.nra.lv/green/keybd.htm

Member: ASCAP, American Composers Forum, American Music Center

Media agent: Donel Young
Biographical Summary
Elodie Lauten has been described as a seminal figure, one of the leaders of the postminimalist movement (20th Century American Music, Schirmer, 1997), "a force on the experimental music scene" (Fanfare, Spring 98). Recordings have been released by o.o. Discs, Nonsequitur, Tellus, Polygram/Point, Lovely Music, Silenzio, Frog Peak and New Tone. Lauten has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, and commissions from Lincoln Center, The Soho Baroque Opera, The Queen's Chamber Band, The Lark Ascending, Elinor Coleman Dance Company, and David Hockney, to name a few. Shortly thereafter, Lauten came to New York City - indeed a cultural Mecca, much as so many young American artists had flocked to England and France in the Twenties. She was befriended by American poet Allen Ginsberg, whose purchase of a Farfisa organ for her dramatically changed the course of her musical career, exposing her to the possibilities of music produced electronically. Ginsberg also introduced her to Eastern religions, including Buddhism.
