Bios The Bob Ravenscroft Trio Bob Ravenscroft, Piano Leader and pianist Bob Ravenscroft has long been a man in pursuit of sonic perfection. His family literally has music in its blood, traceable all the way back to Thomas Ravenscroft, composer of the Whole Booke of Psalms in 1621. Four centuries later, Bob continues to bring a spiritual element and meditative reverence for the environment to his music, but he draws upon an extensive jazz writing, arranging and performing background to create "live" compositions, enabling his audiences to virtually become part of the creative process.
As a performer, Bob Ravenscroft has worked with countless fine musicians, both in his own combos and with others, for more than 20 years. His Jazzbird Studio played a pivotal role in the Phoenix music community for almost two decades, offering jazz instruction, audio production, and numerous concert series. An able and avid teacher, he has served on several jazz studies faculties over the years and has helped to shape scores of up-and-coming performers.
Bob currently performs in concerts internationally and throughout the United States, and has upcoming gigs with Joe Labarbera (drums) and Tom Warrington (bass) during 2002. He is an Artist in Residence at Taliesin West, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Scottsdale, Arizona, serves on the board of the Sanctuary Jazz Foundation with friend Chuck Marohnic, and devotes a great deal of his time to other causes benefiting humanity, often through music.

BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE, PG-13: The story centers on a middle-class lonely guy who uses the Internet to find a date. Trouble ensues when he meets a woman in prison and she breaks out to be with him and wreaks havoc on his orderly life. Featured players include Steve Martin as the lonely guy, Queen Latifah as the woman he meets through the Internet, Eugene Levy and Joan Plowright. (Circus)
THE HOURS, PG-13: "The Hours" focuses on crucial moments in the lives of three women — the almost unrecognizable Nicole Kidman as noted author Virginia Woolf, Julianne Moore as a post-war housewife who is reading Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway" and Meryl Streep as a modern day book editor. Through these interwoven stories the film contemplates the roles imposed upon women and the consequences of rejecting them. (Myrna Loy)
THE HUNTED, R: Billed as a suspense thriller, the story centers on a tracker, Bonham, who teams up with FBI agent Abby Durrell to hunt down a trained assassin, Hallam. With precision and skill, the predator remains one step ahead, and escapes into the city. Featured players include Tommy Lee Jones as Bonham, Connie Nielsen as Abby and Benicio Del Toro as Hallam. (Gaslight)
THE PIANIST, R: Director Roman Polanksi has spent most of his professional life hoping to make a film about the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, a historical atrocity Polanski himself survived. The resulting film is finally here and it's the 69-year-old director's best movie since "Tess". Based on Wladyslaw Szpilman's 1946 memoir "Death of a City," it features an Oscar-nominated performance by Adrien Brody as Szpilman, who was playing piano for the Polish state radio when the Luftwaffe attacked in September 1939. "The Pianist" is a powerful Holocaust drama and a welcome return to form for Roman Polanski. (Myrna Loy)

The depression years found the Dodds brothers struggling to earn a living
from music and Baby was forced to help his brother Bill run a taxi business.
With the revival of interest in early New Orleans Jazz that was budding in 1940, Baby recorded for Decca as part of a New Orleans Album. Victor Records also took the opportunity of pairing him with the great New Orleans soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet for some memorable sides in 1941. In an all-star lineup, completed by Earl Hines, piano, Rex Stewart, cornet and Welman Braud (another New Orlenian) Dodds can be head employing a wide variety of strokes and rolls, both in the ensembles and during his solo, which is played on the blocks, rims and cowbell.

Quincy Jones
An impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Quincy Jones, in the course of his career, has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, magazine founder and multi-media entrepreneur. As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has shuffled pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, African and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including live performance, records, movies and television. It's a creative cornucopia brilliantly brought together on his new Qwest Records release, Q's Jook Joint. His most recent recording, the critically acclaimed Miles and Quincy Live At Montreux, features Quincy conducting Miles Davis' live performance of the historic Gil Evans' arrangements from the Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain sessions. The recording garnered a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance in 1993.

HUDSON MUSIC
http://www.hudsonmusic.com Showcase Philly Joe Jones ... Philly Joe Jones Philly Joe Jones... Philly Joe Jones was born with the name Joseph Rudolph Jones in the city of Philadelphia on July 15, 1923. His mother, a piano teacher taught him the basics in music. In his formative years he also studied the drums with drummers the likes of Cozy Cole and Charles Wilcoxon, receiving valuable advise from Art Blakey and a then younger Max Roach. He established himself as "Philly Joe" Jones, from the name of the city of his birth, to distinguish himself from the mainstay Count Basie’s drummer, Jo Jones. But just as Jo Jones established the rhythm section standard in the 30’s and 40’s, Philly Joe would do the same in the 50’s. Chambers and Jones would be the dynamic rhythm section popular among soloists such as Sonny Rollins and Art Pepper. Jones was on many Blue Note recordings and was virtually house drummer for the Blue Note, Riverside, and Prestige record labels. His style has been described as "too loud" or "like a machine gunner." However one must listen carefully to appreciate his precision and energy. One excellent example of Jones’ playing can be heard of Coltrane’s album, Blue Train. Jones’ first album was in 1958, an LP for the Riverside record label. On his album were players that would become well known in the business: Nat Adderley, Julian Priester, Johnny Griffin and Tommy Flanagan. In his prime, Jones won great recognition. In Downbeat magazine polls he won the new star category on drums in 1957 and the main drum category in 1962. He was second place in 1961, second to Max Roach.

    Notes From the Underground
    Finn de Siecle
The hills are alive with the sound of Finnish music
by Carl Byron

Art abounds all around us in Southern California. Consider, for instance, Ojai. It's much more than an enchanted Shangri-La, gallery-hopping getaway or hot-spring hot spot for Angelenos. The picturesque valleywhich provided the mythical Himalayan backdrop for the first film version of Lost Horizon is also the site of the renowned Ojai Festival. Since its inception in 1947, the annual gathering in this Ventura County arts colony has become one of the world's most important classical-music events, with a prominent focus on presentations of this era's music by world-class musicians. The 53rd edition of this notable conclave, held June 2-6, featured an impressive contingent of performers and composers from Finland. Finnish flair and innovation are generally well known and highly regarded in architecture, design and high-tech telecommunications. What's less widely appreciated in the U.S. is Finland's importance in contemporary classical music. In fact, this sparsely populated Nordic country, with only five million inhabitants, is one of the world's most prodigious producers of 20th Century art music. During a two-month visit to the country in 1995, I remember feeling overwhelmed by the depth of musical activity in most Finnish cities and towns. The small nation currently boasts 29 orchestras, hundreds of smaller ensembles, countless choirs, scores of summer music festivals and two prestigious and successful classical record labels, Finlandia and Ondine.

Mervyn Warren and Quincy Jones take Handel for a Spin.
Cons
None. Absolutely none... Okay, some songs are better than others. The Bottom Line Full Review Unlike other Americans, the Black American does not have another native soil to call “home.” Were it not for their long history in the United States, they would likely be nomadic, with no African port of call to welcome them. By default and not by their own design, they have made America their home in their traditions, creating a home in their culture, away from their erstwhile “home,” of unknown origins. Still considered a social “foreigner,” excluded by a majority of immigrants to a land they’ve inhabited and on which they have toiled for centuries, the one area where the Black has been considered truly and distinctly American, is in the Arts. Their participation in creating novel musical sounds is a driving force in American culture. As much as it can be commercialized and imitated by the Backstreet Boys and the N’Sync kids, and the 911’s, the Britney Spears and Cristina Aguilera’s of the world – when it’s all said and done, your heart will feel Aretha, Whitney, and even Ms. Blige, when you hear true “soul.” It is first a Black thing, then an American thing. And the phenomenon really is hard to understand.
