Wanted Man
By Alan Paul
Even though James Brown has probably trademarked the title "hardest working man in show business" it would be hard for even the Godfather of Soul to deny that Warren Haynes should be wearing the crown these days. The guitarist keeps a schedule that would have almost anyone else questioning his or her sanity. For the past year, Haynes has been busier than an ant at a picnic, constantly touring or recording with Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band or Phil and Friends.
"I can sleep when I’m old, I guess," Haynes says with a chuckle. "I have too many cool gigs to play right now."
GW: Your fans viewed the Beacon shows with the Allman Brothers as a triumphant homecoming. Did it seem that way to you?
HAYNES: It felt good. It was my first time with the band in four years and it was very comfortable coming back in, more so with each show. I thought the band sounded really good and we pulled off a lot of good stuff.
GW: And your tone was fantastic. It seemed like you could perfectly hear each note. What were you playing through?
GW: Was it odd to play in the ABB without Dickey?

Close-Up: How do they memorize all those notes? By Tim Madigan
Star-Telegram Staff Writer William Bolcom's composition, Nine Bagatelles, is a tricky modern work first made available to competitors only a few weeks before the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Yet Lev Vinocour was confident he had the piece safely mastered. Until Sunday night, that is, and those anxious moments before Vinocour took the stage for his semifinal recital. Should he use the printed music while performing the Cliburn's commissioned work, or should he fly without a net, playing a new piece from memory, exhibiting the sort of bravado pioneered by the great Franz Liszt? Those questions lingered in Vinocour's mind, even as the Russian pianist opened his recital with a Beethoven sonata. "I was playing and I was thinking as I was playing, 'Am I still playing the Bolcom with a score?' " Vinocour said after his performance, which was roundly panned by the critics. He didn't decide for sure until after finishing the Beethoven. He would use the sheet music, a choice he seemed to regret afterward. "I am such a coward," he said. "I was absolutely hysterical about that."

IN RECITAL Symphony Hall, Boston, MA "Denyce Graves closed the first half of her Symphony Hall recital Sunday afternoon with that voluptuous mezzo-soprano anthem, 'Mon Coeur s'ouvre a ta voix' from 'Samson et Dalila.' But long before the enchantress had seduced the secret of Samson's strength, she had already enslaved her audience with a potent combination of glamorous person, sumptuous voice, and megawatt charm. "With the marvelous pianist Warren Jones, whom she treats as an equal partner and good friend, Graves presented a generous program followed by numerous encores. The music ranged from the English Baroque of Dowland and Purcell to Brahms; Duparc; the Latin American and Spanish composers Guastavino, Falla, and Vitier; and traditional spirituals. There were several operatic arias, too, from her signature roles of Dalila and Carmen. "Always a gorgeous eyeful, Graves did not disappoint on this occasion, changing at intermission from gold to black spangles. "After several Baroque pieces and a Brahms set, Graves had warmed up her voice to its full glory. The mezzo found four Duparc songs most simpatico and invested them with powerful, almost operatic, emotion.

VENTURA COUNTY STAR Creative Camerata always a joy By Rita Moran, Arts writer
December 19, 2002 No question, these guys are good. Camerata Pacifica members and guests continue to roll through piquant programs with aplomb, superior musicality and a certain joie de vivre that makes every concert a joyous occasion. Saturday night's concert at Ventura's Temple Beth Torah was typical of the ensemble's efforts in its creative programming, combining Haydn and Mozart with British-born composer Rebecca Clarke, who almost became famous in 1919 when her Sonata for Viola and Piano just missed winning the Coolidge Competition and $1,000. Taking that prize was the Suite for Viola by Ernest Bloch, who was already well on his way to building an international reputation. Still, Clarke's body of work has its devoted fans and Saturday's rendition of her sonata justified that enthusiasm. Pianist Warren Jones, joining Camerata for the trio of concerts, and Camerata regular violist Donald McInnes introduced the piece, with McInnes noting that 1919 "was a good year for the viola," as the competition focused on the mellow string instrument. McInnes connects with the Clarke piece through one of his principal teachers, William Primrose, who knew the composer and how she wanted the sonata to be played. McInnes termed the sonata "impressionistic" in its fleeting flashes of colorful style he cited Monet and Gauguin and in its influences, among them American Indian. (Clarke moved to America early on, not satisfied with the level of recognition she was allowed in her native country. Her sonata is refreshingly freewheeling, with strong emotional impact, beginning with the aptly named Impetuoso movement and continuing vividly through its Vivace and Adagio.)

BEST PICTURE:
Chicago
Gangs of New York
The Hours
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Pianist
PREDICTION: Curtis: Chicago Because every year the winner is the movie I have the least interest in seeing out of the five nominations. The trend continues here. Dan: Chicago This one seems to have the momentum, and Gangs' Best Picture win is not already wrapped up in a pink ribbon like it's Director's win is, so this is a free for all in my opinion. Warren: Chicago Probably the most overrated film of 2002, but it's well-made entertainment guaranteed not to offend (or challenge) a soul. Ryan: Chicago The day that I walked out of my first showing, I knew that it would make 200 million dollars and that it would win Best Picture. I'm sticking with my second prediction. This is a true crowd-pleaser that brings the musical back in a rousing way and the Academy has and will continue to go gaga over it. PERSONAL VOTE: Curtis: The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers The scale of this movie was so grand and epic that it simply deserves it. Amazing to watch, like it or not.

If there had been a Philharmonic Hall at 64th and Broadway 30 years ago, Monk would have grown up in its shadow. Monk, by now, casts a pretty substantial shadow himself. By remaining in residence on W. 63rd St. these many years, this mohammed was ready when the mountain came to him. It was only a two-block walk for him to visit the mountain. With him, he brought nine other musicians, including the members of his regular quartet. This was the first appearance of Monk's orchestra since early in 1959. There were only three returnees from that Town Hall concert: Woods, Rouse, and Bert. A fourth, unseen, yet well represented, was arranger Hall Overton.
