Bass Samuel Ramey and pianist Warren Jones presented a recital Saturday evening at the Union Theater that by any measure was a huge success with the capacity audience. Ramey is quite clearly an operatic star of the first magnitude. He displays an easy-going but confident manner and has a relaxed but commanding stage presence. His voice is rich, resonant, invariably on-pitch, and able to carry easily into the farthest reaches of a large hall. I had previously heard him only in a televised performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni , which I found very gratifying. In light of all that, I expected more than came through in this recital. Reconciling expectation with reality, I left the hall with the feeling that what had happened was more nearly entertainment than art, though of course these are not mutually exclusive categories. Ramey's vocal production was nearly flawless. I was disturbed only by a fairly frequent over-rounding of the ah vowel, both in Italian and in German, such that it emerged as indistinct from the vowel in the English word "awe." In the other languages, this amounts to mispronunciation. Still, Ramey's diction was overall several cuts above the norm for opera singers.

Carmel Music Society
By
Lyn Bronson The Carmel Music Society opened its 2000-2001 concert season on October 18 at Sunset Center in Carmel with a lieder recital featuring Danish baritone Bo Skovhus and pianist Warren Jones in a program consisting of five songs by Haydn, a selection of songs from Schubert's Schwanengesang and Schumann's Dichterliebe
In addition to a distinguished career in opera, Skovhus has also built a reputation as a lieder singer and has made some highly regarded Schubert and Schumann recordings with pianist Helmut Deutsch. This concert represents his first appearance of on the Monterey Peninsula, and thus his is a welcome new face on our musical scene. This concert seemed very brief and very serious. There were no operatic arias or vocal chestnuts to delight the opera buffs in the audience (and we do have a few), nor were there any modern art songs or Broadway hits to give the program more variety. This recital began with lieder, and it ended with lieder. At the beginning of the recital in the Haydn songs, Mr. Skovhus' voice seemed rather constrained and distant, and not at all what we might expect from someone with his operatic experience. However, the songs themselves were pleasant, if not terribly interesting, and the two musicians rendered them in a sensitive, musicianly manner. The five songs from the

The San Francisco Examiner has called pianist Warren Jones "the single finest accompanist now working". Jones, who has played with such great artists as Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle, Denyce Grayes and Olaf Baer, will be touring several American cities with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in the next few weeks. In an interview given to La Scena in June, he talked about his views on accompanying and the tremendous joys it brings him. The 47-year-old dynamo stepped onstage when he was five and has never looked back. Jones considers making music with someone else to be one of life's "wonderful experiences". It's a way of knowing people in a non-verbal manner, of feeling "shared energy". To develop a successful working relationship, soloist and pianist must respect each other's abilities. The accompanist is an equal partner, said Jones, and he was happy to report that attitudes on this subject are changing. He recalled an incident in 1997 when he was a juror at the Van Cliburn competition. A woman came up to him and asked, "Should I call you an accompanist or a collaborator?" His reply was a true cry from the heart: "Just call me a pianist!" Jones felt that good technique is merely a starting point for making music. The first thing he looks for in a student is the ability to get along with other musicians. He compared the bond between soloist and pianist to a love relationship: "First you must know yourself then you know the other."

On Monday, April 19, the Carmel Music Society presented soprano Ruth Ann Swenson, assisted by pianist Warren Jones, in a superb recital at Sunset Center in Carmel.
In her opening aria, Francesco Cavalli's Vaghe stele Ms. Swenson made a strong impression with the flexibility and sweet sonority of her lovely voice. Speranze, which followed, offered a nicely chosen contrast to her opening aria, and the lovely pianissimo ending was glorious. In Rossini's L'invito , which sounds for all the world like an early Chopin Polonaise (not surprising, since Chopin was an ardent fan of Rossini and Bellini) Ms. Swenson continued to wow us with her fantastic control of dynamics and beautiful shaping of phrases. In the two Bellini arias, Almen se non poss'io and Per pieta, bell'idol mio
