Keith Jarrett Whisper Not (2 discs) ECM Records, ECM 1724/25, 2000 Cyberhome: www.ecmrecords.com Recorded live in 1999 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, Keith Jarrett's standards trio has rarely sounded more focused and brilliant. For one thing, a premium is put on brevity. There are none of the aimless 20-minute codas that one hears on some previous albums. Only "What Is This Thing Called Love," which opens disc two, exceeds the 10-minute mark. Otherwise, the tunes are played in the same kind of straight-to-the-point manner that Jarrett employed on his previous outing, The Melody At Night, With You. But quite unlike that supremely understated solo recital, these two discs feature plenty of spellbinding virtuosity. Jarrett taps into bebop streams of consciousness on "Bouncing With Bud," "Hallucinations," "Conception," and a very fast "Groovin' High." He introduces "Whisper Not," the ultimate mid-tempo hardbop theme, with the elegance of a classical impromptu. And on the ballads he's simply stunning. While "Chelsea Bridge," "'Round Midnight," "Prelude to a Kiss," and "When I Fall In Love" are wonderful, the highlight is the less well-known "All My Tomorrows." Gary Peacock takes the first solo, and then Jarrett takes flight - briefly, with sublime restraint - before bringing the tune to a wondrously hushed conclusion. Jack DeJohnette is wily, trading fours on the bop tunes with quick-reflexed invention. Often he'll locate just the right textural detail and execute it perfectly, such as punctuating the end of a rhythmic phrase with a firm knock on the splash cymbal. Peacock sounds terrific in both solo and support roles, and his bass sound is captured nicely on this unblemished recording.

Standard Deviation
Jazz legend Keith Jarrett needs no introductions. by Nate Chinen In jazz parlance, a "standard" is a song in the collective repertoire, rendered familiar by years of interpretation. It was in 1983 that Jarrett, along with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, recorded Los Angeles Times The Melody at Night, With You Whisper Not Changes have crept into the repertoire as well. Whisper Not features a preponderance of bebop tunes, which Jarrett plays with a skittering quicksilver touch. Keith Jarrett The Man And His Music Ian Carr
Da Capo Press, 1992
Keith Jarrett is probably the most influential jazz pianist living today: his concerts have made him world famous. He was a child prodigy who gave his first solo performance at the age of seven. In the 1960s he played with the Jazz Messengers and then the Charles Lloyd Quartet, touring Europe, Asia and Russia. He played electric keyboards with Miles Davis at the beginning of the 1970s, and went on to lead two different jazz groups - one American and one European. He straddles practically every form of twentieth century music and he has performed classical music as well as jazz. Jarrett has revolutionized the whole concept of what a solo pianist can do. His albums such as Solo Concerts (at Lausanne and Bremen), Belonging The Koln Concert and My Song have gained him a worldwide following.

Which Basie to buy? Well, the best period for soloists (like Lester Young) were the 40s recordings on Decca, but those are lo-fi mono recordings. The early – mid fifties Verves were hifi, but somewhat less than inspired performances in my book. By the late 50s, moving into the stereo era, Basie appeared to take a fresh breath of life with the help of young arrangers and produced his best ensemble work and many of his most memorable tunes. With more modern stereo sound (though not state-of-the-art), the Roulette years achieve Basie’s optimum combination of artistic performance and sound.

Music Review: The Melody At Night, With You by Keith Jarrett (ECM 1675)
Piano variations from the American songbook
By Philip Sprake 30 March 2000 Use this version to print In contemporary jazz it is sometimes difficult, at least for novices, to recognise the difference between a technically proficient musician and a truly great one. The Melody At Night, With You , a collection of rich piano solos released on CD late last year by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, is an unambiguous demonstration of great jazz musicianship and further proof that he is one of the more significant jazz pianists to emerge since the 1960s. The album, which was recorded in 1997 when Jarrett was fighting a protracted battle with the debilitating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), has none of the extraordinary technical wizardry characteristic of his early career. And while the effects of CFS may explain the occasional melancholic tone on some tracks, the CD demonstrates Jarrett's complete mastery of the instrument, reaching emotional depths rarely achieved by most contemporary jazz pianists. His parents recognized at a very early age that he has both perfect pitch and an unusual talent for music, and so started him taking piano lessons at the age of three, usually considered much too young. He began composing music immediately. The Carr biography shows a legible and correctly written manuscript he wrote at that age. He played his first full-length concert, including intermission, at the age of six, ending with two of his own compositions." Whisper Not
(ECM)
Since 1983, when pianist Keith Jarrett first started recording jazz standards with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette , his "Standards Trio" has released about 17 discs of music on ten releases. The new double CD, Whisper Not , was recorded live in Paris in 1999. It is his first trio recording since Tokyo '96 , which was recorded before his three-year musical absence due to his struggle against Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The CD opens with a beautiful rendition of Bud Powell's "Bouncing With Bud," where Jarrett plays some long horn-like single note runs. I think this concert has more bop tunes than average with tunes by Benny Golson, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Clifford Brown. There are two by Bud Powell—which is appropriate, considering that in this concert Jarrett is the most Bud-like I've heard him. (The second Bud tune is "Hallucinations.") I also think that Jarrett is approaching the tunes in a more straightforward way—trying to get to the heart of the song. There are no long abstract solo piano introductions, which were often a feature of his other trio recordings. Gary Peacock is his usually solid, facile self; Jack DeJohnette keeps a crisp pulse on cymbals while commenting on and coloring the proceedings; and Jarrett intensifies the sense of group interplay by often comping during bass and drum solo transitions. Jarrett continues to play with his usual, intense lyricism, beautiful tone and strong emotion.

Keith Jarrett
A giant of jazz innovation finds himself reaching new heights by deftly interpreting classic tunes.
By David Rubien Jazz artists who came of age in the '50s, '60s or early '70s tend to place a premium on originality. These were years of rapid evolution, and players wanted to do their part to advance the music. So when, in their waning years, musicians from this era resort to playing tunes out of the standard repertory, it's generally a sign of spiritual exhaustion like when a movie actor lands a sitcom. It's interesting, then, that pianist Keith Jarrett one of the more unusual talents in the past 35 years of the music now finds himself in his most creative phase playing almost nothing but classics. Since forming in 1983, his trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock has staked a claim as the preeminent jazz group interpreting standards; it's probably the closest a piano trio has come to the Olympian heights of the late Bill Evans' trios. At the piano, Jarrett, 55, has an improvisational zeal matched by a technique that is equal parts meditation and explosion. He is one of the few living jazz pianists with an instantly recognizable sound. Little in his background suggests that standards would be his ultimate creative ticket. Growing up in Allentown, Pa., he was a prodigy, performing original pieces publicly while in grade school and gigging in jazz clubs as a teenager. Drummer Art Blakey claimed him as a member of his band, the Jazz Messengers, for a brief period in the mid-'60s, after which saxophonist Charles Lloyd introduced him to huge crowds with a group that featured DeJohnette.
