Below are some answers to a few questions I have been asked by several readers. I have inserted these at the beginning so they won't be missed. The biographical information starts later
Who are you?
I'm an ordinary listener with a strong musical background. I have been around great music all my life, because my father made his whole living as a prominent violist, conductor, violinist, teacher, and composer. For the first twenty years of my working life I was a musician myself. For six years I studied music composition at the University of Illinois. I played bass trombone, piano, guitar, electric bass, and recorder. The bulk of my living during that time was made preparing music for publishing as a music engraver. (We used the old technique, utilizing music typewriters and graphic arts techniques.) These days I play only piano, mainly classical. I improvise some, but not really well.

Pianist Keith Jarrett: a gift of music
Pianist Keith Jarrett, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, has released for this holiday season his first recording since falling ill. The Associated Press By CHARLES J. GANS
Associated Press NEW YORK Keith Jarrett wanted to give his wife Rose Anne a special Christmas gift. She had been unwavering in her love and support as the pianist battled a debilitating illness that left him wondering whether he would ever perform again. But he felt too weak to leave home to go shopping. Rather than an expensive gift, he could offer only something straight from his heart a gift of music. And what happened that Christmas, Jarrett says, was ''a small miracle'' that helped resurrect his career from the ''living death'' endured by those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. This holiday season, Jarrett is sharing that gift with the world: ''The Melody at Night, With You'' (ECM) is a jazz album of fragile beauty that touches the soul. Jarrett didn't know what to expect when he sat down at the piano in his studio, just steps from his home in rural western New Jersey, in December 1997. He hadn't played since November 1996, when he became ill during a tour of Italy. He could only listen to recordings that had won him worldwide acclaim: his solo piano concerts, the classical renditions of Bach and Mozart, and the fresh, imaginative interpretations of jazz standards with his trio. His Hamburg Steinway piano had just been customized to his specifications. Its new action enabled him to play extremely softly. He carefully placed microphones to capture the slightest nuance. Jarrett started to play, tentatively at first, and only a few minutes at a time. Gradually, he was able to tape nearly two hours of tender, intimate music.

Special CD Review: The 1970s and Pianist Keith Jarrett Expectations (Columbia Legacy, 1972, 2000) and Fort Yawuh (Impulse Records, 1973, 1999)
By Brian L. Knight
During the early 1970s, talented pianist Keith Jarrett was exploring the "New Thing" of jazz. Best known for his solo performances at the Koln Music Festival or his fusion explorations with Miles Davis, Jarrett recruited a capable band that shared a similar avant-garde musical vision. With saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian, Jarrett deviated from the hard bop and fusion that he was playing in the late 1960s and decided to let things go free. Two albums that displayed this phase of Jarrett’s career are Expectations (1972) and Fort Yawuh Expectations was recorded in the studio in 1972 and Fort Yawuh For the Expectations Exile on Main Street, and "The Circular Letter", which goes the other way as it could easily be found on a Pharoah Sanders/McCoy Tyner album. If these songs are not enough to not only cover the breadth of the music spectrum as well as be audibly enjoyable, Expectations is a 2 CD set. The second disk has the epic "Nomads", that runs 17+ minutes and makes excursions into both free and fusion. As always, Moreira, Motian and Haden maintain the most ambitious of rhythms. Throughout the album, you can also hear the diversity of Jarrett’s talents as he plays the organ, soprano saxophone, and tambourine.

American pianist Keith Jarrett wins Sweden's Polar Prize
By KARL RITTER, Associated Press
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - American pianist Keith Jarrett was named the winner Tuesday of the $117,000 Polar Music Prize for his ability "to effortlessly cross boundaries in the world of music." The award was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, through a donation to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Jarrett was the first musician to win the award solo. It has been split between pop artists and classical musicians. The academy cited Jarrett's fusion of musical genres, from jazz and pop to gospel and classical music, as well as his improvisational skills. "Through a series of brilliant solo performances and recordings that demonstrate his utterly spontaneous creativity, Keith Jarrett has simultaneously lifted piano improvisation as an art form to new, unimaginable heights," award committee chairman Aake Holmquist said at a news conference in Stockholm. Jarrett wasn't at the news conference, but is expected to travel to Sweden to collect the award May 12 from King Carl XVI Gustaf, Holmquist said.

KEITH JARRETT: The Well-Tempered Jazz Band.
by Mike Zwerin
25 June 1998

In at least one small way, and maybe not so small, the 1990s have been the good old days.
The trio of Keith Jarrett, piano, Gary Peacock, bass, and Jack DeJohnette, drums, which has been playing their version of standards for more than a decade, is about as good as jazz gets. Or has ever gotten. Somebody told him they were the best trio in the world - ever. While he realizes that's not literal, it's "nice to hear."
Any objective listener with educated ears at least has to accept that possibility. And while we know that music is not a game and that there is no "best," for most of the 1990s, the Keith Jarrett Standards Trio was at the very least a candidate for the "best jazz band in the world" award.
Moldy figs trapped in the past could no longer complain about the present. And young jazz lions lionized on the cover of Time magazine might have paused to consider the jazzistic implications of Artur Schnabel's contention that nobody under 40 is qualified even to attempt Beethoven's last piano sonata (# 32, Opus 111).
