It's Horowitz, what else do you need?
Cons
None. The Bottom Line Horowitz pays tribute to a Russian master. Full Review With a first name like Vladimir, you’d expect Horowitz to be a monster. And he is. A soul-sucking, spell-casting creature of the night that, with mere hand movements, is able to drain your emotional existence from you like a vampire feasting on his prey. Horowitz Plays Rachmaninoff is a collection of this virtuoso pianist’s performances of the works of the great Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff Tracks: Sonata No. 2, Op. 36 1. Allegro agitato 2. This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. This piece, too, is available here But you want to hear the music my comparisons of six pianists playing the same Rach 3 excerpt. Horowitz was friendly with the Soviet consul stationed in New York (who defected some time around the early 50s) and, from that connection, premiered many contemporary Russian works. The Prokofieff transcriptions from his own Cinderella ballet proclaim that composer from the opening bars. Horowitz also gave the American premieres of Prokofieff's Sonatas 6 through 8, and left a blistering recorded account of #7. The Cinderella excerpts are slighter, although they work beautifully in the complete ballet, but still bewitching. The Kabalevsky aims for more and accomplishes less - curiously "faceless" music, at best a pale reflection of Shostakovich or the Prokofieff of the Sarcasms. Horowitz made these discs for his own use, so don't expect commercial-quality sound. A thin patina of crackles lies over every track. The Debussy in particular sounds like someone is crinkling cellophane in front of the mike. Still, if you can put up with "historic" sound in glorious mono (of course), this disc provides much of interest. Steve Schwartz Search Reviews Back to the Review Index

HIS PRIVATE ARCHIVES BOAST PORTRAITS OF THE MAESTRO MADE SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE HIS DEATH He was known and admired throughout the world, yet in his home country the name of Vladimir Horowitz was officially forgotten for several decades. Those who emigrated to the West were treated by the Soviets as enemies. Soviet encyclopedias and dictionaries described him as an American pianist, a representative of the romantic style of performance, and almost every source referred to the reader to different dates, even places of birth. Entry No. 725 was recently discovered in an archival register of births, reading that Horowitz, Vladimir SemÑnovich, was born October 1, 1903, in the city of Kyiv, meaning that we will mark his centennial in two years. There are many blanks in the record of his Kyiv period. They are studied and filled in by music critic Yuri Zilberman, one of the organizers of the Horowitz Young Pianists’ Contest. Let's raise a glass to the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts series, which celebrated it's 18th anniversary with a recital by the Chinese-American pianist Tian Ying on Wednesday at the Chicago Cultural Center. It seems like only yesterday these free weekly noontime concerts by young musicians were first presented in Preston Bradley Hall. The series is sponsored by Kraft Foods - an enlightened partnership between the arts and the corporate sector,
now in its sixth year. Long may it continue! Ying is fairly typical of the high artistic caliber audiences have come to expect from the series. The Shanghai-born pianist, an alumnus of Interlochen and the New England Conservatory of Music, first came to the world's attention
in 1989, when he lost to Alexei Sultanov in the Eighth Van Cliburn Piano Competition. He took the fifth prize while Sultanov took first place. Many observers felt Ying
deserved to have won the gold. Wednesday's recital confirmed he is a musician's pianist,
as opposed to a "competition" pianist. Ying has individual musical ideas; he clearly can do anything he wants at the piano. But he is far too intelligent and sensitive to waste

    • The Horowitz Experience!
Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) was a virtuoso pianist, who lived in the time of Sergei Rachmaninoff (a Russian composer and pianist). In fact, they were good friends, having in common the fact that both were Russian and pianists. Upon hearing a replay of a concert on PBS while I was in college, I was struck by the beauty of his playing. Having made to "learn" the piano when I was young, I never developed an appreciation for classical piano. Mind-numbing repetitive practice and the impatience of youth both furthered my distaste for the piano. I did not know the beauty of the piano or of music until I heard Vladimir Horowitz for the first time. His performance moved me so much that I began to rediscover classical music. As James Hilton wrote: "If by some dispensation a man born deaf were to be given hearing for a single hour, he might well spend the whole time with Horowitz. Indeed, when I listened to Horowitz for the first time it was almost like that-as if I had never really heard the piano before, as if the instrument itself had never known what it could do until Horowitz came along." While I am certainly unqualified to make such a comment nor do I believe other pianists are unworthy of such praise, I had a similar epiphany when I listened to Horowitz for the very first time. The link listed above provides a good starting point if you wish to learn more about Vladimir Horowitz.

    Film Synopsis…

A revealing portrait of the world-famous pianist at home with his wife, Wanda Toscanini. Shot almost entirely in their Upper-East-Side New York townhouse, the film is a tapestry of private recital and intimate conversation. Chopin, Listz, Rachmaninoff, Scriabon, Mozart, Shubert, Schumann, Bach-Busoni, Moszkowski...All bravura performances by the master himself at age 81, a combination of clowning and consummate artistry interwoven with uncensored exchanges between Horowitz and "Madame." Reminiscences, bickering, admonitions, approval... as well as lingerings explorations of family photographs, furnishings, bookcases and trophies. this film is pure "Direct Cinema" the art of capturing life as it unfolds, without script or narration focused not only on Horowitz, the pianist, but on Horowitz, the human being. Reviews…
“Without consciously trying to be, the film is thoroughly entertaining as it records the little bickerings, the grand flourishes, the mood-shifts, and above all, the gorgeous music-making of this great artist.”
