PERSPECTIVE ON THE ART OF HOROWITZ Horowitz was more than a performer; he was a creator at the piano. (Herbert Stessin) Like an actor who with unrelieved intensity makes one forget the text, the playwright, the theater, the world, Horowitz made the composer’s pristine “intentions” totally irrelevant. He was not praying at anyone’s altar, he was not anyone’s humble messenger. It was he who was sitting on Mt. Olympus, no one else. He, the master magician who breathed life into sounds. He, the mesmerizer, the spellbinder. And he was probably the last of a breed. (David Bar-Illan) Horowitz creates his own musical truths. (Samuel Sanders) The universe of Horowitz indeed parallels that of Einstein, wherein space is curved, time is relative, and four or more dimensions are required to maintain equilibrium along the competing and infinite orbits. (Russell Sherman) The importance Horowitz gave to each note stimulated the concentration of his listeners, who awaited eagerly the advent of the next new sound. He thus stopped the flow of time.

I know a lot of people who say they were in attendance at these concerts. I never had a chance to see Horowitz live in concert. It's my understanding, though, that these records are not true renditions of the actual performances. Horowitz and his engineers doctored them up afterwards, and if you listen to these CDs with headphones the splices are hopelessly obvious. Harold Schoenberg goes on at some length about this matter in his biography of the pianist. The Schumann Fantasy is among the greatest piano recordings ever made. Horowitz himself, however, was said to have dismissed it as unsatisfactory. I've always liked Horowitz's recording of Chopin's Posthumous E Minor Nocturne. This recording made me realize that Guiomar Novaes was far from the only pianist who could play this music, and that in fact her renditions were stale in comparison to what Horowitz and a variety of others did with them. Vladimir Horowitz
There is no question that Vladimir Horowitz was one of the most charismatic performers of the last century. At age 17 he discovered what a powerful effect he had on audiences, and at 23 he knew that he was destined for stardom.
When I asked him about the role of spontaneity in his performances, for which he was well known, he replied, "The most important thing is to have a very clear intention. There is a German word Auffassung - it can only be inadequately translated as 'conception' - that is the most important thing. To have Auffassung is to have a conception of the spirit of the music. And when you have a large framework of conception, you can leave smaller details to the spur of the moment. Sometimes it is a question of color. I know the color of each section, but the exact shade is better left to the inspiration of the moment."
In an age when musicians expressed their distinct and often instantly recognizable personalities in their performances, Horowitz deplored musical competitions. "I am strictly against comparison in art or music. They are not a boxing match. There can be no winner. I think there are many valid interpretations for a single piece of music. But the trouble today is a sameness, a lack of personality. This is the best way to tell you what I mean by personality." Quoting the words of Liszt he read the following:
For the virtuoso, musical works are in fact nothing but tragic and moving materializations of his emotions: he is called upon to make them speak, weep, sing and sigh, to re-create them in accordance with his own consciousness. In this way he, like the composer, is a creator, for he must have within himself those passions that he wishes to bring so intensely to life. "You see, playing the piano is a combination of Brain, Heart and Means. And all three should be even. If one falls short of the others, the music suffers. Without Brains, you are a fiasco. Without Means, you are an amateur. Without Heart, you are a machine. It has its dangers, this occupation."

There is no question that Vladimir Horowitz was one of the most charismatic performers of the last century. Remarkably, though he excelled in the repertoire's most obviously powerful works, it was Horowitz's deeply emotional, highly charged interpretations of solo keyboard works that brought him some of his greatest acclaim. And gave us some of his most touching performances.
This all-new compilation features Horowitz in performance of some of the pianist's favorite composers and most intimate performances of pieces which his audience loved most. These solo keyboard works bring out the greatest strengths of one of the last century's most gifted pianists.

Your mind must control, but you must have heart . . . . Give your feeling free. Played percussively, the piano is a bore. If I go to a concert and someone plays like that I have two choices: go home or go to sleep. The goal is to make the piano sing, sing, sing. If you want me to play only the notes without any specific dynamics, I will never make one mistake. I must tell you I take terrible risks. Because my playing is very clear, when I make a mistake you hear it. Never be afraid to dare.

In retrospect, its a brilliant ploy. Liszt did it with his Rhapsodies , Paganini did it with his 24 Caprices , and even Brahms was not immune with his Intermezzi . A struggling, unknown composer who is also a struggling, unknown pianist can write a work for himself to perform, a work that can be tailored to show off the best of his brilliance as a composer and pianist.

    Review by Lance G. Hill:

The fact that Vladimir Horowitz has not been amongst us for nine years has seen no decline in the interest of this pianist. If you are a piano aficionado like me, then you probably miss his occasional new release on discs. On the other hand, his recorded legacy is huge, almost from the beginning to the conclusion of his life. All the more reason to take any live-performance recording by “The Boss,” as he was once called. Nobody in the record business does a finer job of restoring old piano recordings better than APR. They have as a director, Mr. Edwin Alan, whose brainchild APR apparently is. Everything APR does, from the processing, liner notes, and packaging is first class. They also have at their disposal, Bryan Crimp who spent time with EMI in England, restoring historical recordings for that great company. Crimp does the transferring and remastering. He probably could have had another life as a writer or journalist; his writing of notes included in APR releases is as brilliant as his remastering talents. From the opening of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 through the final movement, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat. I recall hearing another live performance of this concerto recorded just prior to Horowitz’s “retirement” in 1953 (with George Szell conducting) that concluded in very much the same manner as this March 1940 performance. It is quite simply the most incredible piano virtuosity one can hear. Horowitz colors the music with his unique palette making this one of the most memorable performances you will ever hear. The sonority of his instrument becomes orchestral. Horowitz is like a demon pulling the sound from his piano like no one else. The music demands it. His “sound” is uniquely his. It cannot be compared to anyone else.

The collection was presented to the Music Library in twelve installments: 1986 August 25, 1986 September 14, 1987 February 3, 1988 March 28, 1988 April 12, 1988 September 14, 1988 December 14, 1990 July 5, 1990 October 22, 1991 March 22, 1991 November 7, and 1992 March 6. Inventories of these installments are located in the Horowitz reference files in the Music Library. In view of Mr. Horowitz's ties to Yale - he enjoyed playing at Woolsey Hall and was an Associate Fellow at Silliman College - it is fitting that the Music Library be the repository for this great pianist's papers.
