Obituary: James Walker 1929-2002
The composer and pianist James Walker played an important part in the University’s music-making for forty years. As a founder member of the Archduke Trio, he gave his first concert at the University in October 1961 and his last in May 2002. His death on October 11, at his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, marks the end of an era. Although James was too ill to play at a scheduled concert two days before his death, clarinettist Catherine Spencer and pianist Sam Haywood - musicians introduced to me by James several years earlier - stood in, at short notice, and included in their programme James Walker’s Second Clarinet Sonatina, the recording of which was played to James two days later. The Archduke Trio - Kenneth Page, violin (who died in January 1999); Oliver Brookes, cello; and James Walker - was appointed to the University in 1964. As well as performing most of the piano trio repertoire and a series of trios written especially for the ‘Archduke’ by composers associated with the University, James headed a team of piano instructors until the Music Department as an academic entity closed in 1991. He enjoyed teaching and was an inspiration to many, though, rightly, he was less than tolerant towards students who arrived unprepared!

Dominic John (piano) - 25 November 2001
Born in 1980, British pianist Dominic John began piano lessons with his mother. A versatile musician, he has given numerous solo performances as well as being a member of various chamber ensembles and accompanist to a wide variety of instrumentalists and singers. Venues have included St. John’s Smith Square, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Barbican Hall, where he gave the European Premiere of an early piano work by Stephen Sondheim in two special celebration events which were recorded on TER Classics. This year he received first prize in the 22nd Robert William and Florence Amy Brant Piano Competition and was the winner of the prestigious Chappell Gold Medal piano prize at the Royal College of Music. Other prizes have included Worthing Concerto Competition and Sheffield ISM Piano Competition. He has taken part in many masterclasses, notably those by Stephen Hough and Pierre Laurent Aimard. This provided an opportunity to concentrate on slightly unusual areas of the piano repertoire: the works of York Bowen and Ligeti in particular. In 2001, he appeared as soloist in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Chichester Festival and was one of the pianists in Stravinsky’s Les Noces at the Bath International Music Festival. Next March he will be performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Litolff’s Sherzo with the Alassio Concerto Orchestra in Worthing. He is currently completing his Undergraduate study at the Royal College of Music, where he is a foundation scholar, studying with John Barstow.

THIS MONTH'S HIT REVIEW OF
Livin' Like A King
BLUES ACCESS MAGAZINE
"All the cool daddies, zippers and setzers of the late 90's should have hired a singer with the talent of veteran Savannah, Georgia, jump-blues expert Haywood Gregory. Gregory, who replaced the Jumpers' vocally-ailing Eldridge Taylor two years ago,has great lung power, chooses his shrieking spots carefully and is funny and enthusiastic, battling with saxophonists Mike Hashim and Dan Alvero for control of the party song "Sinner." Perhaps owing to bandleader Jospeh Geary's presence on the drums, the Blues Jumpers build effectively from the rhythm section up, with the pianists and guitarists jumping in rather than piling on."

BIO
The Blues Jumpers, who have received glowing reviews nationwide, are now elevating their level of success by collaborating with critically acclaimed singer songwriter Haywood Gregory. The result of this union- a new CD entitled Livin' Like A King Born in Savannah, Georgia, Haywood Gregory started singing in church at the age of seven. Soul, funk, rhythm, jazz and jump blues, Gregory has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Carl Perkins, Bobby Watson and Tony Bennett to name a few. He has toured throughout the world, including performances at the Newport Jazz Festival (RI), the Lunt Fontanne Theatre (NY) and Donnerstag (Koln, Germany).

The wealth of musical and artistic talent in the village has resulted in several village and school music and choral groups, and a village youth orchestra, with recorder, junior and senior groups within it. All give regular performances in the village, and in some cases, even internationally.
In addition there are regular Art lectures through the Arts Society, as well as occasional lectures on other subjects. A number of organisations hold regular meetings on a wide variety of topics.

Kinostart:
