62. Jim Hall, Concierto
chords the intro and trades off with pianist Hanna before It is a lovely little melodyfeaturing hall on acoustic to bassist Ron Carter and drummer steve Gadd.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/concierto.html
Jim Hall, Concierto (CTI Records, a division of Sony,1997) Guitarist Jim Hall's Concierto has an interesting history of how it got to be in its present form. It was originally released on LP (which I wore the grooves off) in 1975 on the CTI label which went belly up a few years later. Columbia Records bought up all the old CTI masters; and, in 1987, it was re-released on CD, adding an alternate take of one track from the original LP and one new tune altogether (Good, I can't wear this one out!). Sony then bought Columbia Records and re-released it again, now back with the CTI logo, and this time with two more alternate takes and yet another new tune, all taken from the original recording dates. Regardless of which form of this recording you get to hear, you're in for a treat. Hall is one of the leading exponents of jazz guitar on today's musical landscape. His ultra-smooth playing, sense of harmony, dynamics and ability to really swing are an absolute joy to listen to. On this recording Hall is surrounded by a legendary ensemble of sidemen: Chet Baker on trumpet, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Sir Roland Hanna on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Steve Gadd (who seemingly can play just about any kind of music) on drums. Arrangements were charted by Don Sebesky. The album opens with the Cole Porter standard "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To." The treatment here is an uptempo one, and the band comes out swinging from the first note. Hall leads off with an extended solo which continually restates the theme. Desmond, the essence of cool, follows here with a short but sweet alto solo and briefly duets with Baker on trumpet, before Baker charges ahead. Hanna is featured next with a rhythmically complex, contrapuntal solo. He is followed by a brief horn chorus leading into a really nice bass solo by Carter. Hall, Desmond and Baker close the track by trading lines they're so attuned to each other's playing that they seem to be extensions of themselves.

Richard Parris Quintet - "Body and Soul" RealAudio Sample Not a late bloomer, but rather an unheralded Montreal perennial, tenorman Richard Parris blows up a storm on this debut quintet offering of seven favourite standards plus a rousing collective excursion into Sonny Stitt's "Stitt's It". Plenty of propulsive drive is shared by trumpeter Joe Sullivan, guitarist Greg Clayton and Parris on "Witchcraft", "Time on my Hands", or "On Green Dolphin Street", while the sublime nuances demanded of such numbers as "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and "Ghost of a Chance" are tastefully rendered. Parris' delivery on the title tune is inventive and evocative. All this before an appreciative audience. (J.S.) DSM 3020 to order
Steve Hall Quartet - "Hall Things" RealAudio Sample Yet another unsung performer is Montreal saxophonist Steve Hall whose lengthy sojourn in NYC (c1979) has provided him with opportunities to work with the likes of Gil Evans, Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey and pianist Kevin Hays who joins him on this 1997 session recorded live in Montreal. Hall and Hays work well together; the former, Warne Marsh-like in tone, preferring the upper register of his instrument with infrequent brusque descents - the latter, introspective yet innovative working from within a carefully chosen framework. The programme is suited to their mutually responsive interplay, both on free flowing up-tempo numbers (" House is Not a Home"/"Midnight Sun"/"Insatiablue") and the more ballad oriented selections ("Lonely House"/"It Never Entered my Mind"/"My Reverie"). The highlight is the contrastingly rhythmic segue of Monk's "Ugly Beauty" into Hall's own "Hall Things Hall". (J.S.)

The 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert Hi Lindy Hoppers!!!
Dancing in the Aisles! Why is the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert so Important? The idea to present the Goodman band in concert at Carnegie Hall began as a publicity stunt by Wynn Nathanson, Goodman's publicist. At that time, Carnegie Hall was a bastion of musical propriety, or as John McDonough put it "An import house of Old World traditions where snobby smirks toward American culture had a way of making status-sensitive Yankees feel like Babbits for comparing Gershwin to Wagner or Tatum to Horowitz." Benny Goodman was initially hesitant about the concert, fearing for the worst; however, when his film Hollywood Hotel The concert was a sellout weeks in advance; 2760 seats sold at the astoundingly high price of $2.75 (or about $43 in 1998 dollars). An unusual footnote to the event was that it was picketed by pro-Franco (i.e. Fascist) opponents of Goodman's support for the Spanish Republican government. Briefly, "Twenty Years of Jazz" was good; the jam session laid an egg, but works by the Trio and the Sextet took off. "Swingtime in the Rockies", "Bei Mir Bist du Shoen", "Stompin at the Savoy", "China Boy", and "Dizzy Spells" built the enthusiasm. The finale, "Sing, Sing, Sing" blew the roof off the house, ending with the absolutely unbelievable solo of pianist Jess Stacy. Benny Goodman eventually came into possession of the acetates. Because Goodman had used musicians from a variety of bands, contract difficulties made it virtually impossible to issue a recording. Everything faded from view until about 1950 when the acetates were discovered in (of all things) his sister-in-law's house. Needless to say, the quality had degraded even further. With heroic engineering, it was possible to restore about 75% of the concert. The re-engineered version was issued in 1950 and became one of the first of the 33-1/3 rpm long play records to sell over a million copies. A rework of this recording is available on CD. In early January of 1998, it was announced that the aluminum studio masters had been rediscovered, allowing the entire concert to be reproduced with much better fidelity.

and Guest Artist Record Karlton E. Hester, Ph.D.

[Director of "Jazz" Studies at Cornell University, Fall 1991 - Spring 2001] Dr. Hester organized 9 annual "jazz" festivals at Cornell University and started the Annual Cornell University "Jazz" Festival series. He brought such renowned artists as McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Cecil Taylor, Steve Turre, Jaki Byard, Randy Weston, Billy Taylor and other artists to the Cornell University campus. The guest artists performed with the students, and presented clinics and lectures. Typically invited guest artists worked directly with the student ensembles for 1 or 2 days prior to the performances, often presenting their own original compositions. Performances of Dr. Hester's professional ensemble Hesterian Musicism were a regular part of the festivals and other events, featuring new compositions by Karlton Hester and guest artists from both the Ithaca community and across the United States. Dr. Hester also produced dozens of smaller performances with visiting artists to the Cornell campus and Ithaca area. These efforts are now being expanded to a broader community and to include a wider range of contemporary Global African music through the Global African Music Festival Series . A listing of the annual Cornell University "Jazz" Festival Series, as well a selection of the other events featuring guest artists is below*.

Steve Lacy, Riding Around in Monk's Vehicles
By Mike Zwerin International Herald Tribune PARIS - As part of the Banlieues Bleues festival, which begins Friday on the outskirts of Paris, the all-star Thelonious Monk Tentet will perform on March 21 in the beautiful new auditorium of the Cite de la Musique at Porte de Pantin. This instrumentation, with Monk himself on piano, was first heard in Town Hall, New York, in 1959, when for the first time his works were arranged for a large ensemble. A few years later, Thelonious Sphere Monk would be on the cover of Time magazine. It is said that all really new ideas go through three stages - the joke, the threat and the obvious. Monk was literally laughed at at first and asked to leave certain bandstands. Then musicians became curious about why other musicians were so attracted to him. And in the end it's still odd that such eccentricity could become so accepted. You hear ''Round Midnight,'' which he wrote at the age of 18, in elevators and airport lounges. Monk's music has become classic, it will not die. Young musicians continue to find new ways to relate to it.

Michael Harrison began playing the piano at the age of six studying both classical and jazz and went on to study composition at the University of Oregon and The Juilliard School . In 1977, he bought his first tamboura, a resonant Indian drone instrument, and the following year began intensive study of North Indian classical singing with India's master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath and his earliest American disciples La Monte Young and Terry Riley . Harrison was a disciple of Pran Nath until his passing in 1996 and continues his studies today with Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan , making regular trips to India for periods of intensive study and practice. In addition, he teaches and performs concerts of North Indian classical music throughout the United States and India with Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Terry Riley, Steve Gorn, and as a soloist. Fascinated with the beautiful resonances created by the overtone-based tuning system ("just intonation") used in Indian music, Harrison began applying these ancient principles to the piano, creating music with sounds that standard western tuning could not achieve. In 1980, seeking the guidance of the most innovative composer working with "just intonation," he came to New York City to study with the avant-garde visionary La Monte Young under the auspices of the
