by James G. Shell (as published in Glenngould magazine, Spring 1999) This article, written especially for Glenngould, grew out of an exchange
that appeared in the Miscellanea section of our Fall 1996 issue. Writing to correct a jazz-related error in Glenn Gould: Selected Letters, James G. Shell went on to note some interesting points of comparison between Gould's piano style and that of many modern jazz pianists. "Seeds for an article here, perhaps?" was our editorial reply. Shell took this as a challenge, and
the result was this stimulating essay, which we are pleased to publish for the first time.
James G. Shell lives in Roanoke, Virginia. He writes music criticism, fiction, and poetry, and has taught classes in jazz at Roanoke College.

Ontario, Canada Glenn Gould
Glenn Gould was a famous Canadian classical pianist who, by the age of 23, was filling concert halls with audiences eager to hear his interpretations of the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Schoenberg. He received international acclaim performing in Europe, and was the first pianist from North America to perform in the Soviet Union. Gould's interest in music was highly developed at an early age, as is shown by this manuscript, written when he was eight years old.

Gould's transcription of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll for piano continued a nineteenth-century tradition which took advantage of the ready availability of pianos to bring versions of orchestral works to a wider audience. His transcription gives us insight into his processes of thinking about the piano. Richard Wagner wrote the

  • I was only living in Canada for three years, at age 7, having come from Hong Kong, when Glenn Gould died. That was in 1982. This doesn't mean anything, except that I'm in somewhat awe thinking that for a brief period, him and I were living in the same city. Now, fifteen years later, I have become an avid (some say obsessed) fan of his work. Glenn Gould, some may argue, is a culture (he would prefer sub-culture) of all things "Gould-ian" , a culture which, I'm afraid, I'm addicted to. y ou see, it seems like from my reading and experience at least for those whom Gould's work means something, it does so in more than just an ordinary way. And I'm certainly no exception. But it didn't begin like that, a love at first hearing. My first encounter with Gould was in a university cultural studies course, when my professor decided to show an excerpt (bless his soul) of Glenn Gould: Off the Record (National Film Board of Canada), a documentary on the Canadian pianist in the fifties. And since then several pilgrimages have taken place to see his pianos (one in the National Library in Ottawa; the other, on display at the G. Gould studio, part of the CBC building, in Toronto), his chair (also in Ottawa), and, of course, his gravesite in Mount Pleasant Cementary, Toronto.

The long gallery of commemorations leads us to Glen Gould, a memorable name in the concert world.
2002 marks 20 years since his death - it is both a duty and an obligation to remember this great personage.
He combined an excellent piano technique and interest in the world of research; the latter often caused him serious problems with the most rigorous critics.
Our homage to Gould can begin with this concise remark made by George Szell (important music critic and director), away back in 1947, when he attended the fifteen year-old pianist’s concert in Cleveland: “That madman is a genius”. On that occasion Gould performed Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, amazing the audience by his personal approach to this immortal score, courageously changing its rhythmic content. Such statements reveal the greatness of the performer, as those who go beyond preconceived patterns and “clichès” are generally defined “mad”. But Szell, by using the word “genius”, highlighted the artist’s uniqueness and interpretational courage. Gould succeeded in astonishing the academic world with extremely personal performances. He tried to free the minds of listeners and experts of those interpretative parametres which, to him, were only limits to music, with the new sounds he spasmodically sought. Evidence of his precocious genius and his tenacious study of the piano is that at the age of ten he was well versed in J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Harpsichord, which proves that he already possessed a clear idea of how to build a solid musical structure.

Medium Film Keywords Children Disability Family Relationships Humor and Illness/Disability ... Stroke Summary A tiny figure slowly emerges from a vast expanse of snow, and a succession of short essays recreate moments in the life of the brilliant Canadian pianist, Glenn Gould (Colm Feore). From his unusual Ontario childhood to his musical debuts on the international stage, to his eccentric living, performing, dressing, driving, waking, and sleeping habits, this film offers insights into his loneliness, hypochondria, polypharmacy, and tragic death from a stroke at age 50 in 1982. The artistic vignettes are enriched by a tender humour, the intimate recollections of real-life friends, the abstract beauty of piano keys in motion, and above all, Gould's immortal playing. Commentary Gould's musical genius was well tempered by his foibles. Did he cease performing in public from his professed conviction that recordings were better? Or, was he afraid? If he preferred his unending solitude, why did he find it necessary to phone friends at 3 a.m. and talk at them until they fell asleep? Was hypochondria the disease for which he took hundreds of different types of prescription medications? Or, was it somehow a futile, preventive response to an uncanny premonition of his sudden end?

Did you ever wonder how tall Glenn Gould was or what colour his eyes were? Are you interested in knowing what his advice to graduating conservatory students was, or hearing archival recordings of the pianist unavailable anywhere else? Perhaps the thought of off-beat photos of Gould disguised as some of the fictitious personae he assumed from time to time, or reading a doctor’s analysis of what kind of patient the inveterate hypochondriac was, might pique your curiosity. All of these items, and many more, are now available in the comfort of your own home via the Internet. The National Library of Canada’s (NLC) Glenn Gould Archive is an extensive site on the World Wide Web which is drawing increasing interest and praise. magazine (May 15, 1998) invites "lovers of Glenn Gould [to] curl up in front of their computers as their idol did at the piano" to visit the "documents, photographs and recordings [which] bring back to life the famous pianist on the Web". We hope that Gould himself, an outspoken apologist for the electronic media, would appreciate the NLC’s use of the Internet to disseminate information and documentation found in his archives. We could think of no Canadian more appropriate for our first archival Web site. A quick survey of the digital Glenn Gould Archive yields the following highlights:

    The Glenn Gould Prize 1999
This prestigious international award was initiated by The Glenn Gould Foundation as a continuing tribute by the people of Canada to Glenn Gould's life and work. The Prize, which was given for the first time in 1987, is awarded every three years and will next be given in 1999. It is awarded to a living person who has earned international recognition for his or her distinguished, highly exceptional contributions to music through the use of communications technologies. These technologies can include recordings, radio, television, videos, film, print, interactive media and other new media. The Glenn Gould Prize consists of C$50,000 and, for 1999, an original work of art created by the distinguished Canadian sculptor and mixed-media artist, Catherine Widgery, and donated by the Woodlawn Arts Foundation. This work of art will be held by and exhibited at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa-Hull. A portrait photograph of each laureate is displayed in the Glenn Gould Studio of the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto. The administration of the Prize has been entrusted to the Canada Council for the Arts.
