in full EMIL GRIGORYEVICH GILELS (b. Oct. 6 [Oct. 19, New Style], 1916, Odessa, Ukraine, Russian Empired. Oct. 14, 1985, Moscow, Russia, USSR), Soviet concert pianist admired for his superb technique, tonal control, and disciplined approach. Gilels began piano studies at the age of 6 and gave his first public concert in 1929 at the age of 13. In 1933 he gained top honors in the first All-Union Musicians Contest. After graduating from the Odessa Conservatory in 1935, he moved to Moscow for further study with Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1938 he won first prize at the Ysaÿe International Festival in Brussels and was appointed professor at the Moscow Conservatory. After World War II he toured outside the Soviet Union, and his debuts in New York City (1955) and London (1959) were greatly acclaimed. Although the works of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and especially Ludwig van Beethoven came to form the core of his repertoire, Gilels also played those of Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, and Soviet composers.

Emil Grigoryevich Gilels
b. 1916 Odessa, Ukraine; d. 1985 Moscow, USSR I am less acquainted with Emil Gilels's biography than some of the other pianists I have written about, however, I feel his artistry is great enough for me to say some words about him. Gilels was born October 19 into a musical family . Although widely known as a pupil of Heinrich Neuhaus (along with compatriot Sviatoslav Richter), Gilels credited Bertha Ringold as his primary musical influence during his formative years. When he was 16 years of age, the shy-yet-fiery redhead played Beethoven's Appassionata and Ravel's Jeux d'eau for the well-known virtuoso Arthur Rubinstein at the local conservatory and made a lasting impression. After completing graduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory, Gilels participated in several prominent competitions, winning second place in Vienna (Yakov Flier took first) and first in the Ysaye at Brussels. Pianists Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (7th placehe received a zero from the Italian judge!) and Moura Lympany were among his competitors at Brussels. The Second World War delayed Gilels' American debut, but the cultural provisions of the 1955 Geneva agreement gave him the honor of being the first Soviet artist to visit the United States in over a quarter of a century. I was lucky enough to listen to a reel-to-reel broadcast tape of Gilels' Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut (in Northwestern University's music archives), playing the Tchaikovsky 1st under Reiner. The performance is essentially similar to the RCA Living Stereo release made around that time (in fabulous sound, I might add). Gilels' playing is athletic, lyrical, and excitinga different conception than his later, weightier Columbia recording with Mehta and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His two commercial recordings of the Brahms 2nd follow a comparable pattern. The earlier recording (again with Reiner and the CSO) is quite volatile, while the latter version is more mellow in tone and leisurely paced. As Gilels aged, he lost some of that youthful energy and relied more on his experienced insight to communicate to his audience.

He was 18 when he was world famous as a pianist by winning the Chopin prize in Warsaw. Inm 1962 he shared the firsdt prize with John Ogdon at the Tchaikovsky Competion in Moscow. In 1972 he was a citizen of Iceland and he did not return to Russia (or the Soviet Union) for 26 years. Grieg: Lyric Pieces Emil Gilels' personal selection of favorite lyric pieces is one of his most praised and best recordings. The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone. Gilels was the one who identified himself as second to Sviatoslav Richter"If you think I'm something, wait until you hear Richter," he supposedly said. But this collection is just as beautiful in its way as Richter's lyric collections. Along with some of his Chopin playing, this Grieg set reminds us that Gilels was a major Romantic pianist. he piano was by far Prokofiev's favorite instrument. He was a formidable pianist in his own right, premiering most of his works in concert halls around the world. Fortunately, many of the greatest pianists of the 20th century were drawn to Prokofiev's compositions as well. Two Russian pianists who knew Prokofiev and premiered his later piano sonatas stand tallest in the pantheon of great interpreters of Prokofiev's piano works Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. As with the great conductors of today who specialize in Prokofiev's works, there are a number of young pianists who rival the greats of yesterday. Several pianists have recently completed recording the entire Prokofiev piano cycle including Boris Berman (on Chandos), Frederic Chiu (on Harmonia Mundi), and Oleg Marshev (on Danacord). Also not to be missed is Barbara Nissman , who was the first to record the complete piano sonatas to commemorate Prokoifev's 100th birthday in 1991 her sonata cycle remains one of the towering achievements of the last twenty years for Prokofiev lovers. Edvard Grieg's lyric pieces easily ranks in my top 5 or 10 collections of piano works. Moreover, I've listened to this particular recording by Gilels at least 50-100 times and seem to always find something new in each listening. In some sense this recording is a hidden treasure, in that whenever a piano composition finds its way into the mainstream, via movies, commercials, etc., one will often hear Bach, Beethoven, or Chopin (especially Chopin!), but rarely anything from this wonderful collection of pieces. All the better, since one does not need to lose the extra mental baggage that comes with the often unfortunate commercialized associations. For me what makes this recording very special is the sensitivity and patience Gilels brings to each note of each piece. He has the rare ability to play soft, yet maintain the lyrical quality of each piece.

Too bad all the folks below have never heard Gilels do these works live, on bootlegs that are hard to track down and recorded in inferior sound but well worth the listening effort anyway. Here he seems to be playing it cautious. And for that, this CD's reputation puzzles me. There's technical command to be sure, but no more so than that displayed by other pianists. For the Appassionata, for example, Richter, Kovacevich, Ernest Levy, and especially Arrau (any of his recordings, but the EMI mono stands out) beat Gilels hands down. And that's just scratching the surface. For the Waldstein, just about anything (except Arrau's last performance, which is beautifully recorded but underpowered) beats this safe and timid performance. Les Adieux is the best piece on the disc, but even here I don't get the sadness of the departure or the longing for the return. Review Summary: Immense Gilels - Rating:
When this recording of the Appassionata was first released in 1974, it was greeted with almost unanimous acclaim. It was a revelation to me personally because it was the first time that I actually realised how the piano could be played. With the Waldstein, the Appassionata is one the towering works of Beethoven's middle period.
