''S Wonderful'
The Gershwins Come Alive in Symposium
by Helen Dalrymple The Library's Music Division celebrated the March 17 opening of the new George and Ira Gershwin Room located across the hall from the Jefferson Building's Coolidge Auditorium with a March 13-16 event that explored "The Gershwins and Their World." With songs, dances, lectures and panel discussions by personal friends of the Gershwins, musicians, performers and scholars of their music, George (1898-1937) and Ira Gershwin (1896-1983) lived again for the participants and audience of some 300 people. In his opening remarks, Jon Newsom, chief of the Music Division, explained how the almost 60-year-long association between the Library of Congress and the Gershwin family began in 1939: "Harold Spivacke, chief of the Music Division from 1937 to 1972, developed a strong friendship with Ira and Leonore [his wife]. Out of the warm personal ties of this friendship we have seen the growth of an institution within the Library that has fostered the building of our collections and the expansion of our public programs in unprecedented ways, consistent with the broad vision of Ira and George. It was during Harold Spivacke's tenure at the Library that many of the great treasures in the Gershwin Collection came to us, and not only from Ira and Leonore, but from other family members, including George's sister, Frances Gershwin Godowsky." The George and Ira Gershwin Room is a permanent exhibition area for materials from the Library's George and Ira Gershwin Collection, which includes George's piano and desk, Ira's typing table and typewriter, self-portrait oil paintings of each brother, as well as music manuscripts and other documents that chronicle the lives and careers of the two brothers. An interactive audio-video kiosk allows visitors to view film footage and additional materials from the Gershwin Collection and hear recordings of Gershwin music.

The Newsletter of Pianist/Musicologist Dr. Alicia Zizzo
Volume I Number I Winter 2002
In early 2003, Warner Bros. Publications will be issuing Dr. Alicia Zizzo's transcription for solo piano of George Gershwin's 'I Got Rhythm' Variations. This will be the first such published edition of this piece The composer wrote his variations for piano and orchestra in 1934. Dr. Zizzo has written the following, "The task of transcribing a piece as complex as 'I Got Rhythm' Variations was enormous. I felt obliged to maintain the integrity of the interrelated group of variations with their individual ideas as they formed an integrated whole. In order to successfully reduce the thousands of notes an entire orchestra plays in this work to two hands, I had to develop a deep understanding of the intricate and elegant weaving of Gershwin's harmonies as he continually reworked four little notes. I determined that I would preserve as many chordal, verbal and dynamic directives as ten fingers would allow. For this I relied heavily on his original manuscripts." You can read the entire Forward Dr. Zizzo has written for the Warner Bros. publication at

I Hear A Rhapsody: The Classical Music of George Gershwin

One-Day Symposium on April 6 at Hofstra University Features International Group of Gershwin Performers and Scholars HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, Hempstead, NY The Hofstra University Cultural Center will present I Hear A Rhapsody: The Classical Music of George Gershwin on Saturday, April 6, in celebration of the rediscovered classical music of one of America's greatest composers. Panel discussions, lecture-demonstrations and concerts will be presented during this one-day event. Gershwin's recently expanded classical solo piano repertoire will be featured during this symposium. These rediscovered and reconstructed works have brought him even more recognition around the world as a major American classical composer. It is the musicological research of the Joseph G. Astman Distinguished Symposium Scholar Dr. Alicia Zizzo that led to the publication of solo piano editions of The Annotated Rhapsody in Blue, The Complete Seven Preludes, Blue Monday, Lullaby and others by Warner Bros. Publications under the auspices of the Gershwin estate. The day-long event will conclude with a concert by pianist Jeffrey Biegel, an internationally renowned Gershwin specialist, who will perform the solo piano Rhapsody in Blue and other Gershwin works at 8:30 that evening in the University's Monroe Lecture Center Theater. Symposium highlights include:

Solo Pianist with Orchestra Pianist Lincoln Mayorga, admired worldwide for his expertise in both classical and popular music, presents a unique concert featuring George Gershwin's complete works for piano and orchestra. Mr. Mayorga, who has played Gershwin since childhood, created this program out of the desire to give Gershwin's most important music the serious attention it deserves, by presenting it in full symphonic evening. Unlike most all-Gershwin concerts, which usually feature his songs along with one or two orchestral pieces, The Serious Gershwin is a feast of the composer's finest concert works:
Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F, the "I Got Rhythm" Variations and the Second Rhapsody, supplemented by two of his most colorful orchestral works, the Cuban Overture and Catfish Row (the suite from Porgy and Bess ). A scholar of Tin Pan Alley and classical piano literature, Mr. Mayorga is uniquely qualified to perform Gershwin. His heartfelt playing captures the bittersweet romanticism, as well as the spontaneity, the rhythm, and the snap. He has performed this music all over the world, both with orchestras and in recital. Recently, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra invited him to play Rhapsody in Blue and the "I Got Rhythm" Variations in their first concert devoted entirely to American music.

Yet this is the word that George Gershwin liked to apply to his masterpiece, Porgy and Bess . Now, jazz (in other quarters) is also a dirty word, and, Porgy and Bess has been called, with some accuracy, a "jazz opera". The semantic don't really matter much, but the fact is that being an opera, and being the work of George Gershwin

1998 marked the 100th Anniversary of the birth of George Gerswhin. As a special tribute during this centenary year, Sony Classical is exploring the genius of the most-performed American composer of this century. We have mined our extensive vaults and unearthed recordings and performances we are proud to present in this special Masterworks Heritage release featuring twenty-eight of Gershwin's songs for Broadway shows and Hollywood films, and select classical scores in recordings made at the time of their first hearing, often by artists who premiered them. This collection will provide unique insight into the "original" sound of Gershwin as heard when these songs were new and Gershwin's popularity was immense, not least as a performer. In that role Gershwin himself is heard as pianist in four songs from his Oh, Kay!

He became known as one of the country's most gifter composers of popular songs, musicals, operas, piano works and orchestral works. George's music had a wide impact on an international audience who have accepted it as the embodiment of musical Americana. George enjoyed writing popular songs, which he improvised quickly and easily at the piano. He wrote pleasing, memorable tunes. Within his Tin Pan Alley style George incorporated jazz elements such as 'blue' notes (usually flattened 3rds and 7ths), syncopations, and 'walking' bass lines of parallel 6ths and 10ths. Some Jewish elements may also be identified, such as the minor 3rd used often in Jewish folk music, parlando and melismatic passages similar to those in synagoggue chant, and the scalic rhythmic repetitions of the

Gershwin's parents, Rosa and Moishe Gershovitz migrated from St. Petersburg in Russia to New York in 1891 and the family name was Americanised as Gerwvin and later adapted to Gershwin. Their first son Israel (Ira) was born in 1896 and George, their second son, was born on the 26th September 1898.
In 1910, his mother purchased a piano for Ira, but it was George who quickly took to it, playing popular melodies on it. George's exceptional natural ability on the piano was soon recognised and his parents arranged for him to have lessons. After suffering from the hands of several bad teachers, he became a pupil, in 1912, of Charles Hambitzer.
Inspired by his teacher's enthusiastic approach to both old and modern classics, George pondered the idea of becoming a concert pianist. Given his lack of interest in the academic fields, his parents made a last ditch attempt to give him a stable career and arranged for him to go to an accountancy school. However in 1914, the 15yr old persuaded his mother to allow him to leave school to take up a job as a song salesman.
