TUTS to strut its stuff, sell some, too
By SHELBY HODGE
Theatre Under the Stars is on its way to the new Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, and it is cleaning house. So what is TUTS going to do with the wealth of old posters, show merchandise and autographed memorabilia that it doesn't want to haul across town? Sell it all. The moving sale takes place Saturday at 2600 Southwest Freeway, Suite 600, at the corner of Kirby and the freeway. Among items expected to be hot sellers are three baseballs from Damn Yankees autographed by Tony Randall . And Marie Osmond's signature graces several Sound of Music posters.

Arriving in Fort Worth, Texas after a week of listening via Internet to the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition put me in mind of an old Twilight Zone the players to perform a lieder recital with a singer. “Can you imagine,” he said with a touch of urbane diffidence, “how much we could learn about the interpretive powers of the pianist compelled to collaborate in Schubert’s Schwanengesang Even from the shrewdest professional, that’s smart thinking. Still, his comments offered a foretaste of life inside one of the most extraordinary musical institutions of all time.
Roger Wright, one of the 2 American pianists, plays Rzewski's "Winsboro Cotton Mill Blues" in the preliminary round.

The Pummills - Janet Sallie Amy and Julie , perform their show " ClaviVoce " at four grand pianos. The four Pummill women are supported by the technical and production talents of the Pummill men, Doug and Patrick. You will hear them as pianist and singers. You will hear the exhilarating and brilliant sound of all four pianos at once. You will hear the gentle sound of the four acapella voices. It may be a jazz "scat" solo or an Italian "aria" or it may be Chopin or a tune from the Andrews Sisters. In any event, you will be entertained and treated to a wide variety of musical genres and styles. The six Pummills - Janet, Doug Patrick , Sallie, Amy and Julie are a team of performing musicians who have worked together on many projects. As early as age 5, Julie was sitting on a tall stool in a recording studio in Fort Worth singing "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" for a music education project. Together they have recorded over 5000 songs for various educational and commercial publications. Christmas found them singing holiday music and creating shows for civic and church groups. The kids grew up making music with family, school, church and professional ensembles. Patrick sang numerous performances of Amahl from age 9 to 14. Sallie was piano soloist with symphony orchestras and chamber groups. Amy performed in summer stock, opera and as church organist and Julie played and sang with jazz bands and spent many hours in the recording studio. Together, and with other organizations, they have performed on stages from Carnegie Hall to Kyoto, from Brussels to Santa Fe and from Lincoln Center, New York to Missoula, Montana.

4 John Bell Young ON WATCH On Monday morning Roger Wright and I had breakfast at Fort Worth's Worthington Hotel with Lowell Liebermann, the distinguished composer whose work was performed at this year's contest. He told us something rather interesting, which the Cliburn has not disclosed fully. This year the Cliburn, in its customary effort to include a contemporary work, held an invitational competition for composers. More than 30 of them contributed a work for consideration for performance at the competition. Out of some 32 anonymous submissions (the names of the composers were, for a time, kept anonymous), only a few were successful. One of them was Liebermann, whose Three Impromptus proved a most effective and haunting work. In any case, the work was not commissioned by the competition. In fact, the participating composers were asked to submit any work, even if already published, providing only that it had not been awarded a prize previously. The Cliburn awarded the winning entries cash prizes Lowell's was the most frequently performed, so he won the grand prize of $5000. Of course, it is odd, and potentially unfair that the Cliburn competition would have sanctioned a published work; as Lowell pointed out, he could just as easily have submitted

Wed Nov 15 06:51 MST 2000 Harumph. "Our very good friend, the brilliant pianist", Jose Feghali, ... Anal void! Cranial-rectal inverted numbnut! Fecal cerebral contaminate! Perhaps his name was originally spelled "Fugawe", and is a member of that native American tribe of famously inept scouts. It was originally thought that they were so proud of their scouting abilities that they would would announce to all "We're the Fugawe!" whenever they crested a ridge. However, after many incidents, it became clear to all that what they were really saying was, "Where the fugawe?" Conrad Hoffsommer - mailto: hoffsoco@luther.edu You have the right to remain silent. Customer Reviews
Rating: 5 Stars - a unique and charming program.... If you are looking for a unique and musicaly fun CD containing a delightfull program played by one of the most talented pianist of today , this CD is definately a great choice. A combination of latin (south american) music and French and German , Jos© Feghali brings to life the spirit of the dance form in the compositions included on this CD. Definately a Must-buy ! Rating: 5 Stars - PLEASE GIVE US MORE!!!! This is JUST a most DELIGHTFUL disc! The Ravel is ASTOUNDING (I think it is my favourite recording EVER!) and the miniatures are so charming.... Please, Jose Feghali - record more of this music and other music. MORE MORE MORE! Recently - I had an opportunity to hear you play a LIVE concert and I WAS BLOWN away... your sound, your presence on the stage, you charm, the most beautiful encores..... You are a true musician and artist. WE WANT MORE! Rating: 5 Stars - A Pure Delight This is one of those rare recordings which delights with it's whimsy and impresses with the obvious mastery of the artist. The contrast of the wildly varied compositions, all based on the waltz theme, is a wonderful idea, full of charm. It is one that I have played at least 100 times, enjoying it and finding something new with each listening. Mr. Feghali, please give us more!
