Pianist Angelina Gadeliya is the first of six winners of the Oberlin Concerto Competition to be featured in Con Portraits this year. She recently performed Beethoven's Concerto No. 4 with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in Finney Chapel.
Angelina Gadeliya, 22, calls Colorado Springs, Colorado, home. When she visits her family, she often joins her four younger sisters for impromptu concerts. But her first home was the town where she was born, Sukhumi, Georgia, and where she began piano lessons, at the age of six, with Alla Golovco. When she was seven, her family moved to the Ukraine, and she continued her lessons with Elena Chebrova until her family immigrated to the United States in 1990. The Gadeliyas settled first in South Dakota, and Angelina began piano studies with Arlene Krueger. Now, in her senior year at Oberlin, she studies with Associate Professor of Piano Angela Cheng. The two have worked together for five years; Angelina followed Cheng to Oberlin from the University of Colorado in 1998.

DISTRICT AUDITIONS
District Auditions were held on April 13 at Andy's Music for the 13 students unable to participate on April 20. The judge was former MMTA member, Delila McMillin, who now teaches in Slidell. She was very impressed with the caliber of students she heard and wrote wonderful comments. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Andy's Music for allowing us to hold the auditions in their lovely recital hall. Auditions on April 20 were very successful with a record number of students making 00 ratings! Many thanks to Connie Sullivan for providing a wonderful luncheon for our judges (Jim Hussong, Roy Wylie, Deanne Harmon, Pat Trimble, Stephanie Womble and Pam Noel) and the all-day workers. State auditions will be on May 10 and 11 at Montevallo and we wish all our students success.
STATE CONVENTION
A convention brochure should be forthcoming with detailed information on all. Note the info regarding no luncheon being served this year on Friday so you may plan other arrangements in advance for that. Motel accommodations are listed in the Soundboard. We encourage all to attend to make it the biggest and best. With this being the 50th anniversary event it is sure to be one of the best. Again this is a wonderful educational opportunity worth way more than the cost of the convention in value.

Special updates
On Friday evening, November 15, 2002, I was transported into a magical realm by the incomparable piano artistry of my friend, Alexei Sultanov. The 300 Sultanov fans and music lovers at the PepsiCo recital hall at Texas Christian University listened in hushed awe to the three video tapes attesting to Alexei's brilliance. I am not a musician, so I cannot comment in musical terms about his technique or interpretation of the pieces; I do know that I soared with the eagles as his fingers flew over the keyboard in ever rising crescendos of sparkling sound. From some camera angles, we saw his hands on the keyboard and yet again reflected in the mirror-like shine of the piano. In other angles, we saw his head and whole body moving with the intensity of his playing. As the music surrounded us, it filled the hearts of everyone there with love and respect for his musical genius. On the program, entitled "A Film Retrospective", was Chopin's Grande Valse Brillante in E-Flat major, op. 18, which Alexei played in Warsaw in 1995 to win the highest prize in the Chopin International Piano Competition. This was followed by his audition tape for the Van Cliburn competition, which he won in 1989 at age nineteen. This tape, never before seen by the public, featured pieces by Liszt, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff. The grand finale was the viewing of the final round of the Cliburn competition, with Alexei playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 accompanied by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The applause on the tape, as well as from the viewing audience, was tremendous.

UH President Evan Dobelle will be one of seven judges who pick the next Miss America. Advertiser library photo So he sought out Hawai'i's own 2001 Miss America, Angela Baraquio, for advice and she convinced him it was a worthwhile American institution that touches the lives of thousands of women every year while offering more than $40 million annually in college scholarships. Baraquio won $100,000 in scholarships over three years in the Miss America and preliminary pageants, enabling her to pay off college loans.
