Madison Symphony Orchestra
Jose Feghali, piano
Joseph Giunta, conductor
The young Brazilian pianist Jose Feghali proved a dazzling soloist Saturday evening as the Madison Symphony Orchestra fielded its second candidate for a new music director, Joseph Giunta. Feghali played the very difficult Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major , by Franz Liszt. He managed its intense technical demands with the relaxed confidence one expects from today's hot-shot, prize-winning soloists. More importantly, he brought to the work's many lyrical and introspective passages a really poignant melodic sense, yet without indulging in the kind of quirkiness that ensnares so many artists seeking to set themselves apart from the crowd. Feghali played with straightforward, solid musicianship, and it was more than satisfying. A small flub in the final movement did not diminish the excellence of his performance in the least. Less understandable and unfortunately far more intrusive was a very ragged beginning attack in the well-known Waltz that forms the second movement of Tchaikowsky's Serenade for Strings , which opened the program. Conducting from memory, Giunta had been waiting and waiting for the many latecomers to take their seats after the first movement. Possibly because he was a guest conductor and on trial for an important job, he may have been reluctant to do what he should have done: lower his baton and glare at the audience. With the concert starting nearly ten minutes late, the good citizens could have managed to get there in time to avoid such disruptions.

Pianist Feghali sets, meets own challenge By Wayne Lee Gay
Star-Telegram Classical Music Critic
FORT WORTH Brazilian- born, Fort Worth-based pianist Jose Feghali set himself up with a huge challenge in his concert last night at PepsiCo Recital Hall on the Texas Christian University campus. The program, the fourth of six major events on the TCU Classical Piano Series this summer, presented three well- known monuments, all written within a span of 32 years in the early 19th century, all by Austrian or German composers, all in C major, all essentially free- form sonatas and all containing, at one point or another, nearly impossible technical problems.
But Feghali announced, via the bold opening electricity of Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata, his intention to take on the musical, emotional and physical hurdles of this repertoire with no holds barred.
And he's one pianist who can pull it off. Looking as youthful as when he won the Cliburn competition 15 years ago, he once again exhibited a style of playing that layers extroverted expressiveness on top of a fundamentally refined outlook.
Through careful pacing and detail, Feghali continually underlined the constant succession of magical moments in this piece, from the gripping pulse of the opening bars to that hypnotic segue from the middle Adagio to the Rondo finale.

Camera Classical Music Critic Michael Christie has paired the youngest and newest of the summer to bring down the curtain on his first season with the Colorado Music Festival. The two come in one package: Composer Michael Hersch is 29; his "Memory of Ashes," commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony, was premiered just last year. The 20-minute work opens the week's program by the CMF Festival Orchestra. Hersch took no interest in classical music until his brother, a horn player, gave him a video of Georg Solti conducting Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Within weeks he was composing; two years later he enrolled at Peabody. Although critics spot hints of Shostakovich, Mahler and Berg in "Ashes," Hersch turns his back on such detective work. "The only thing a composer can strive for," he says, "is to be unique." Reviews of East-Coast performances of "Ashes" confirm that he is. The work has been praised for its expressive power, skillful orchestration and the thoughtfulness of its content. Christie brings continuity to this final week of the season with a double look at Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." Jose Feghali plays the original version of the work for piano on Tuesday; Christie then performs it with full orchestra on Thursday and Friday.

There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe this weekend’s performances by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Have you ever seen a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter commercial ? You know the ones – they are usually in black and white and they feature adorable children with big eyes and loving parents, and sometimes the grandparents, too, and they make you wonder if you are really making the right choices with your money. I have always loved them. Not because of the finances, mind you, but because they have the most hauntingly beautiful romantic music in the background. I now know which music - the

But he's making his first appearance in Bass Performance Hall on Tuesday, when he returns for a solo recital on the Cliburn concert series. By no means limited to the French repertoire, Bianconi proposed an all-German program for his return to Fort Worth and Bass Performance Hall debut; but officials at the Cliburn Foundation asked him to play some of the French music for which he's so well known. Bianconi agreed to present one of the most difficult works in the piano repertoire, Ravel's

The Cliburn medalists: Where are they now?
By Wayne Lee Gay
The number of Cliburn medalists will grow to 30 in a few weeks. Of the 27 already on the list, there is one bona fide superstar Radu Lupu and one who's very close Barry Douglas and a number who may yet attain that status Alexander Toradze, Jose Feghali, Alexei Sultanov, Vladimir Viardo. Some have settled into comfortable performing careers; some have settled into comfortable faculty jobs. Others have been struck by tragedy. One has died. One has only recently recovered from a five-year bout with cancer. One of the youngest has suffered a mild stroke and fights chronic hypertension. But, for the Cliburn Competition, the search for the musical heir of Van Cliburn, the pianist who combines charisma and musicality, continues.

Moore's first recordings were of a different nature from the refined classical style which graces his current work. Back in the early '60s, he had a number one rock'n'roll hit and several other popular tunes, such as When the Dance is Over, Your Turn to Cry, When you Lose your Love and others. In those days, he thrilled audiences by playing piano, guitar, tenor sax and upright bass by turn while he sang. When away from the piano, Moore is a health care executive , serves on numerous business and non-profit boards and is a human rights activist involved in Amnesty International International Campaign for Tibet Texas Christian University and other venues.
