Liszt, Franz
composer, pianist, conductor hungary 22 Oct 1811, Raiding - 31 Jul 1886, Bayreuth
Grave location: Bayreuth: Stadtfriedhof (small mausoleum)
Liszt made his public debut when he was nineteen years old. Soon afterwards prince Esterhazy heard him and was much impressed. Funds were raised for a serious musical education and Liszt went to Vienna to study composition with Salieri and piano with Czerny. After two years he was set to pursue his studies at the conservatory in Paris, but Cherubini, then the director of that institution, refused to admit him because he was a foreigner. After a further private eduction he played at the houses of rich families and in 1824 he made his debut in London. He caused a sensation and soon played at Drury Lane and before George IV.
The experience of seeing him perform usually put his audiences in Paris in a state ecstasy and when in 1830 he met Paganini, Berlioz and Chopin, they inspired him to exploit his romantic spirit and to find his own style as a composer.
The duchess d'Agoult left her husband in 1833 to follow Liszt and their liaison resulted in three children: Blandine, Cosima and Daniel. They separated in 1839. Under her writer's name Daniel Stern, Marie D'Agoult published the novel "Nélida", relating her relationship with Liszt. He probably never forgave her for doing so. Among Liszt's many other affairs with women was the one with Lola Montez, ending in Liszt locking Montez into a hotel room and running away himself.

THE NEW YORK VIRTUOSO SINGERS
The little Liszt festival at Cooper Union last weekend was curtailed because of the pianist Stephen Drury's indisposition, but what remained was both splendid and rare: a performance on Saturday of Liszt's "Via Crucis" of 1878-79. This is an astonishing piece....There was also expert and thrilling attention from the choir, a 15-voice core of the New York Virtuoso Singers, conducted as usual by Harold Rosenbaum. The two lamenting Bach chorales interposed in the score had a fittingly stern dignity: the calls of "Crucifige!" were fierce and tight, and the final sweetness was achieved without sentimentality.
The NY Times, 11/20/02 I feel I am still walking a little bit on a cloud. Last Sunday's concert was such a happy, deeply gratifying experience. I can't thank you enough for your fantastic work of preparing the chorus. They sang splendidly, and were a joy to collaborate with.

Zorn Again: Portrait of the artist as a shorn man. Never Mind the Bullocks, Here's John Zorn New Music Works steps into the complex and misunderstood world of experimental-music icon John Zorn, whose mix of jazz, classical, rock and punk never ceases to confound and amaze By Scott MacClelland Among contemporary composers of music, John Zorn sticks out like a sore thumb. He plays virtuoso jazz saxophone, continually revives his klezmer roots, suffers critics badly, recycles every musical influence he ever heard and is a control freak with a profound fascination for spontaneity. Obviously, he's a renaissance man. And luckily for him, we happen just now to find ourselves in the midst of a music renaissance. That's a good thing, of course; new American classical music has since World War II been through lengthy bad times interrupted by only brief moments of glory. Now that's changingdramatically. But for all its greening, there is no obvious focal point in a renaissance, no clear gravitational authority that draws everyone into its orbit. That comes later. Like previous rebirths, a verdant process of discovery has energized composers with fresh inspiration and revitalized imagination.

JOHN ZORN Angelus Novus Haven't been too keen on Zorn's recordings for awhile, but this one really packs that long-awaited punch I'd almost given up on ever hearing. Even if "clever-clever-clever" cut-up compositions are not at all your thing, I think you would be hard pressed not to find something inspirational on AT LEAST the solo piano piece "Carney" on this CD. Without a doubt, this is Zorn at his best: insanely well written figures, ingenious and non-arbitrary use of extended techniques coupled with dizzyingly complex tonal stylings. Yes, there's even some subtlety! Add to that the EARTHSHATTERINGLY VIRTUOSIC rendering talents of pianist Stephen Drury (who reportedly slaved over this thing for over a YEAR) and you have one hell of a "happening" that is sure to "freak you out"! Yes kids, this is the articulated insanity you've looking for. The other pieces on the CD are also a noticeable cut above quality-wise from what we have all come to expect from this Tycoon of the Avant-Garde. It's reassuring that amid the and very understandable complaints of Zorn's "Overly Influential" presence in modern music, he has managed to prove (to me at least) with this CD that he is well deserving of some high praise. Besides, at this point I doubt that very many Zornophile's, considering their average mentality, would note the difference in quality between this CD and, say, Weird Little Boy. So hey, who said Zorn couldn't spring a GREAT album on his "buy everything" contingent now and then?
