opuscds.com review
The American Classics series on Naxos continues with a programme devoted to one of the key figures in late-19th century American music, Edward Macdowell. Macdowell's two piano concertos are works of immense charm and immediate melodic appeal. Full of romantic bravura, they demand much of the pianist, being reminiscent of Saint-Saëns, or even Liszt. The remaining pieces are equally beguiling, combining passages of scintillating vigour and moments of blissful melody.
Superbly crafted performances by pianist Stephen Prutsman in the concertos and by cellist Aisling Drury-Byrne in the gorgeous Romance for cello and orchestra, supported with customary excellence and musicianship by the NSOI under Arthur Fagan. Well worth investigating at Naxos’s bargain price.

    Prelapse: An Interview
    by Rich Ladew
The following interviews with Alex Lacamoire (keyboards) and Mason Wendell (bass, vocals) took place over the Internet and the telephone from late October to mid November [1999?]. Visit their website often and order their CD. You need to have it, like, say yesterday!! You can also e-mail Prelapse to tell them what you think. How long was Prelapse around before the NEC/Zorn artist in residence program? Mason: Alex: The earliest moments of the band occurred in May 1994, when I transcribed a few of Zorn's Naked City charts and performed them live with Mason. In 1995, Mason and I transcribed a total of about 35 tunes and did a Naked City Tribute show that March, billed as the "Prelapsarian Collective," with me, Mason, Dane and Andy (the sax player was Demetrius Spaneas). Our next big gig was the Zorn-fest at NEC in Jan 1996, with RJ Rabin on drums and Jeff on sax. [Ladew included note: Stephen Drury, an excellent pianist and NEC faculty member, was instrumental in putting on this "Zorn-fest."]

    Stephen Drury
Named 1989 Musician of the Year by the "Boston Globe", pianist Stephen Drury has concertized throughout the United States and the world. He made a very successful New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1984 as the winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition and has since given solo performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, New York's Symphony Space and many other widely varied venues. A champion of twentieth-century music, Stephen Drury's performances of music ranging from the piano sonatas of Charles Ives to works by John Cage and the music of John Zorn have received the highest critical acclaim. He has appeared at the Subtropics Festival in Miami and the Festival of New American Music in Sacramento as well as at Roulette and The Knitting Factory in New York. He directed the world premiere of George Russell's "Time Line" for orchestra, chorus, jazz band and soloists in 1992. In 1988-89 he organized a year-long festival of the music of John Cage and, at the composer's request, played the premiere of Cage's "101" with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in April, 1989. In 1991 he commissioned new works for solo piano from John Cage and John Zorn with funding provided by Meet The Composer and performed the works in Paris and at the Walker Center in Minneapolis. In March 1995, he performed the world premiere of John Zorn's concerto "Piano Requia" with the Cologne Radio Orchestra and conductor Dennis Russell Davies. Mr. Drury was selected by the United States Information Agency for its Artistic Ambassador Program, which led to a 1986 European recital tour. A second tour in the autumn of 1988 took him to Pakistan, Hong Kong and Japan. He gave the first piano recitals ever heard in Julianehaab, Greenland, and Quetta, Pakistan. In 1989 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Mr. Drury a Solo Recitalist Fellowship which enabled him to give residencies and recitals of American music for two years. On tour in the 1992-93 season, he gave the Latin American premieres of works by Gyorgi Ligeti, John Zorn and

It has no Evangelist delivering Gospel texts but is a quasi-dramatic representation of the discovery of the empty tomb by four of Jesus's followers (a convenient vocal quartet). The short episodes of the Magnificat , in the D major version sung here, use constantly changing vocal forces and orchestration. Both pieces are full of imaginative scene painting and gorgeous arias and choruses. The performances on this disc are superb in every respect. McCreesh accepts our current understanding of Bach's performance practice by using the soloists as the chorus, one to a part, with his 22-member Gabrieli Players and a Baroque German church organ providing splendid support, all recorded in perfectly balanced sound. The singers are experienced Baroque specialists and they sing beautifully, with accurate intonation, clear diction, and idiomatic and expressive phrasing. McCreesh's direction, as always, is crisp and authoritative, and his period-instrument orchestral group provides rich, warm accompaniments. There are other good recordings of this glorious music, for instance from Herreweghe (Harmonia Mundi), but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest and should not be missed.

"'...to take an interest in Satie,' Cage wrote, 'one must be, first of all, disinterested, letting a sound be a sound and a man a man, abandoning illusions about ideas of order, expression of feeling, and all the other aesthetic sales-talk we have inherited.' Humbly engaged but never over-determined, Cheap Imitation
Artist: CAGE, JOHN Title: Empty Words (Parte III) Label: AMPERSAND Format: Price: Catalog #: AMPERE 06 "John Cage's Empty Words is something of an epic in reverse: a diminutive vocal exercise divided into four distinct parts that gradually breaks down the writings on sound from Henry David Thoreau's Journal into pure vocalise. Disarticulated, distended and utterly transformed, Cage's recitation utterly abandons all connection to linguistic meaning and becomes pure aesthetic glossolalia. The nearly three hour performance documents Cage reading from the third part of Empty Words at Teatro Lirico in Milano during 1977 before an increasingly restless crowd of Italian students as it erupts into one of the great, if unnoticed, art riots of the last century. This fully re-mastered double disc set is packaged in a deluxe outer slipcase and features new liner notes by Phantasmic Radio author Allen S. Weiss, a collection of writings and drawings by Cage himself and lots of previously unpublished photographs of the event."
