Executive producers: John Zorn and disk union. Associate producer: Kazunori Sugiyama. Recorded at John Knowles Paine Concert Hall, Harvard University. Recorded by Joel Gordon. Mastered by Allan Tucker. Classical Music is lucky to have a pianist as dedicated and passionate as Stephen Drury. A close collaborator of both John Cage and John Zorn, Drury's virtuosic solo recitals and critically acclaimed recordings are establishing him as one of contemporary music's most important performers. Drury's adventurous programming and unique interpretations of classical literature shed new light on these well-known masterpieces for solo piano. John Zorn has shown us many sides of his eclectic musical vision (some may think too many), but here is a side of Zorn's work that has pretty much remained hidden - his compositions for classical chamber ensembles. This CD marks the first in a series documenting these pieces, commissioned by some of the world's leading ensembles and appearing on CD for the first time. The works here span over twenty years, and include Christabel, a student piece written in 1972 inspired by the romantic mystic poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the wind octet Angelus Novus composed for the world-renown Netherland's Wind Ensemble and dedicated to the Jewish cultural theorist Walter Benjamin, the dynamic chamber symphony For Your Eyes Only and Carny, a virtuosic solo piece that receives an impassioned and breathtaking performance by pianist Stephen Drury. The Callithumpian Consort of the New England Conservatory (conducted by Stephen Drury) perform this challenging music with startling clarity and intensity on this CD that will surprise and delight Zorn fans and detractors alike.

Written for piano soloist, six boy sopranos and full orchestra, Aporias is John Zorn's most accomplished composition to date. Performed in Cologne, Vienna and at Carnegie Hall, this monumental piece, part piano concerto, part Requiem has been universally hailed by performers, composers and audience alike as a new vision of modern orchestral music. ** Ugly Beauty
    SWEETNESS
    (Atlantic)
The NYC-based trio Ugly Beauty, who feature former Cell guitarist Jerry DiRenzo, are still in the process of discovering their own sound on Sweetness, their debut for Atlantic. Their goal seems to be a kind of organic, fluid, jangly rock with a dream-pop center, something they achieve on "The Only Heroine." Elsewhere, singer Christy Schnabel's voice is the group's defining feature, and it wanders from sexy Debbie Harry belting ("Bring Me Flowers") to heavy, narcotic refrains ("Seven Days") to an almost giddy B-52's-like chorus on "Endless Stream." She pours out vain, bittersweet lyrics with an authority alluring enough to make you forgive Ugly Beauty's growing pains, which amount to getting stuck too often in the mid-tempo doldrums and never really settling into a style they can call their own. Sweetness is a promising enough introduction to a band who seem to be on the right path. Cathy Miner

New England Conservatory of Music www.newenglandconservatory.edu Founded in 1867, Boston's New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) is the United States' oldest independent school of music. Despite the Conservatory's link with the past, the school has a tradition of innovation. For example, in 1969 it was the first anywhere to give a degree for Jazz, and today it still has a large, well-respected Jazz Department. In 1974, composer Gunther Schuller , who was NEC's president at the time, and pianist Ran Blake created the Contemporary Improvisation program to merge jazz, classical, and ethnic influences. Among examples of the school's progressive thinking is its current mission to teach, support, and promote new music, not only in the Composition Department, but also throughout the school. NEC's large composition faculty includes: Arthur Berger Robert Ceely Robert Cogan Alan Fletcher ... Caleb Morgan , and Malcolm C. Peyton Students in the department typically remain with one primary composition instructor throughout their time at the conservatory, although they are free to change as they please. Students have a weekly lesson, and many of the instructors also have regular seminars for their students. Undergraduate composers are required to sing in chorus. However, exceptions are made at times - a current composition student is also contrabass virtuoso, so he performs with the University Orchestra instead. (Graduate students do not have a performance requirement.) Most composition students take piano or conducting lessons, which is particularly important because for the orchestration class the students must conduct their assignment themselves.

Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment Forced to name one masterpiece written during the last quarter of a century, I would almost certainly nominate Frederic Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated! Rzewski, born in 1938 in Westchester, Massachusetts, is at the same time a musician of decidedly avant-gardist sympathies he made his name in Europe in the early 1960s as a virtuoso pianist and proponent of the new music and a composer-pianist in the tradition stretching back to Mozart. He is also a man of decidedly populist politics, and this work, composed in 1975, "tells a story which, although it may not translate into words, is nonetheless based on real events. As I wrote it I was thinking of the universal aspirations of people everywhere to freedom and independence." Three months before the military coup in Chile in 1973, which overthrew the elected government of Salvador Allende and installed the murderous military dictatorship of Pinochet, composer Sergio Ortega, part of the

John Cage: The Piano Works 3
John Cage: The Seasons, Cheap Imitation, ASLSP . Stephen Drury, piano. Mode Records, Mode 63, 1998. One compact disc.
The Piano Concertos disc covers a wonderfully wide range of material: three different sound worlds of Cage's output, all in excellent performances. The fact that the repertoire focuses on Cage's grievously under-recorded medium-to-large ensemble compositions is an added pleasure. The disc contains many surprises, beginning with its title (who thinks of Cage as a composer of three piano concertos?) and a moving on to the realization of its content.
The disc opens with the beautiful sounds of Concerto for Prepared Piano and Chamber Orchestra . A well-rehearsed orchestra plays in tune and with good tone, taking loving care with details. Even the blend with the solo prepared piano, so problematic with this concerto featuring a muted soloist with a full symphony orchestra, is carried off with finesse. The exotic compounds of instrumental sound in the orchestra complement with logic the metal and wood agregates of the stopped notes in the piano. When the soloist's prepared notes combine with orchestral sounds, the results are simply magical.
