May 11, 2001 PIANIST VAN CLIBURN TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREE FROM SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY DALLAS (SMU) Southern Methodist University will confer an honorary Doctor of Arts degree upon pianist Van Cliburn during its 86th annual commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in Moody Coliseum, 6024 Airline Road. In 1958, at the height of the Cold War, 23-year-old Texan Van Cliburn won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, making him the first classical musician for whom the city of New York has thrown a ticker-tape parade. He later became one of the highest paid concert pianists of his generation, performing with every major orchestra and conductor and appearing in all of the internationally renowned concert halls. He has made many timeless and popular recordings of major piano concertos, and has developed a vast solo repertoire. The recording he made with Kiril Kondrashin, the Russian conductor with whom he played his 1958 prize-winning performance in Moscow "Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1" has sold more than three million copies worldwide. In 1962, he established the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which is held every four years in Fort Worth to encourage the development of young artists. In 1987, after an extended sabbatical, Cliburn performed at the White House at a state dinner honoring Mikhail Gorbachev, then the Soviet Union's General Secretary. Two years later, and 31 years after his triumph at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Cliburn returned to the Soviet Union to perform at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and in Leningrad, which is today St. Petersburg.

It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

Van Cliburn - Classical Pianist of Our Time
Perhaps you've learned about Beethoven and Bach, Mozart or Tchaikovsky and enjoyed their great contributions to our world's history of music. You can thank your interest in classical music to people like Mr. Van Cliburn, who shares his love of classical music by giving attention and support to it. Mr. Van Cliburn is a classical pianist who brought honor to our country in 1958 when he won the 1st Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Americans beamed with pride to see a young performer from our country play with such skill and style in front of an international audience. His dedication and talent drew admiration for classical music at a time when the space rocket Sputnik had focused many on science and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union was strong. How did such a young man become such an skillful musician? Van Cliburn was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on July 12, 1934, the son of Harvey Lavan Cliburn and Rildia (Ril-da) Bee O'Bryan Cliburn. He began studying piano with his mother at age three. She had studied under Arthur Friedheim, a student of Franz Liszt, teachers well known for their talent and skill. Mr. Cliburn moved to Texas when he was six years old, and won a Texas competition when he was twelve. In 1948 he played in the prestigious Carnegie Hall as the winner of the National Music Festival Award.

Van Cliburn joined the Utah Symphony and music director Keith Lockhart on Tuesday night for a nostalgic performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, with which he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 at the age of 23.
Tuesday's performance at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City was a chance to see and hear what happens when an extraordinarily talented pianist lives with a particular piece for nearly a half-century.
Cliburn no longer plays with the stunning accuracy of his youth; the rapid octave passages of the concerto's first movement were slightly muddled; the trill-like motive of the fourth movement lacked clarity.
However, the trade-off is that Cliburn's sense of lyricism and artistic detail has grown and matured over the decades. Best of all, the qualities that set him apart as a young pianist are still in place. He is a pianist who projects sound like few others can, and he transmits that rarest thing musical personality.

    THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Nancy Futrell has been practicing medicine for two decades. Lately, another kind of practice has been occupying her time piano practice. The Salt Lake City neurologist is headed for the Van Cliburn Foundation's third International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, held in June in Fort Worth, Texas.
Before she leaves, Futrell will give a recital of her competition repertoire tonight in Salt Lake City's Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.
The 75 Cliburn hopefuls include college professors, accountants, attorneys, engineers (electrical and railroad), computer programmers, homemakers and librarians.
New York City news anchor Lauren Green is back for a third try; also in the field is Justice Department attorney Virginia Lum, a frequent performer on the Temple Square Concert Series. Past winners of the competition were a Starbucks manager and a coin dealer. But the most-represented occupation, by far, is medicine. There will be 14 doctors in the house when the weeklong competition opens June 3.

Ever since Jon Nakamatsu was 6 years old, he knew he wanted to become a pianist, but he never thought it could become a career. Moscow At the time, the idea of first prize going to a non-Russian competitor was unheard of. When Van Cliburn brought the victory home, it was a huge musical success for the United States. Nakamatsu said applying for a spot in the Van Cliburn Competition is much like applying for college. It involves a paper application, written recommendations and a screening test. Four years ago, Nakamatsu said he applied for the Van Cliburn Competition and didn't even pass the screening round. But last May, Nakamatsu, a California resident, was awarded the gold medal over about 250 other applicants. He became the first American in 16 years to win the competition. Along with the gold medal, Nakamatsu was awarded a $20,000 cash prize, two years of concert management, a CD release of some of his performances and two full, paid years of touring. Nakamatsu said touring is the most important part of the prize package.
