Chinese Pianist Wins Gold in Poland's Chopin Competition
Chinese pianist Li Yundi won the gold medal Friday at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, the first time the event's top prize has been awarded since 1985.
The Chopin competition, held every five years since 1927, is devoted entirely to music by the 19th-century Polish composer. The judging is so tough that in 1990 and 1995 no performances were deemed good enough for a gold medal.
Li, still a student at Shenzhen Art School, has won several prizes at the international level. His past honors include a first place at the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1999, and a third place at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in the Netherlands Second place in the Chopin competition was awarded to Ingrid Fliter, 27, of Argentina , and third went to Alexander Kobrin of Russia The 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, which opened on October 4, 2000, attracted 98 players from 25 countries.

Frederic Chopin - the Greatest Polish Composer
Polish composer and pianist of the romantic period, regarded by many as the greatest composer of the piano music. Born in Zelazowa Wola near Warsaw, Poland in 1810. His father was French, his mother Polish. Chopin studied the piano at the Warsaw Conservatory. He played his first public concert at the age of 7, and published first compositions at 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer of piano pieces. He toured Europe, giving concert performances acclaimed by audiences and critics. In 1831 he arrived in Paris where he became well known as a pianist, teacher and composer. In 1838 Chopin began to suffer from tuberculosis. He died in Paris in 1849 at the age of just 39. Chopin's music has many references to his Polish origin. His mazurkas reflect the rhythms and melodies of Polish folk music, and his polonaises convey the heroic spirit of Poland occupied by other countries during his life. He composed ballades, scherzos, waltzes and etudes. His music is lyrical and romantic, very original with harmony, subtlety and poetic beauty.

The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition
The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the oldest events of its type in the world, and enjoys great prestige and universal renown. In the seventy years of its existence, the competition has evolved and transformed itself, altered and improved its form, and created its own extensive tradition. The initiator of the Frederick Chopin Piano Competition was Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew (1887-1980), an outstanding Polish pianist, teacher and composer.
    Prof. Jerzy ¯urawlew
The first Chopin Competition took place on 23-30 January 1927 in the concert hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The next Competitions in 1932 and 1937 were also held there, at a five year interval, in accordance with the rules of the organisers. The 1942 Competition was not held owing to the Second World War, and the Competition could not be continued until several years after the war. The first postwar and the fourth International Frederick Chopin Competition took place in 1949, in the "Roma" concert hall, which is still standing in Nowogrodzka Str., the temporary home of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Opera. The Competition became the culmination of the Chopin Year, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the death of this great composer. The next Competition was organised six years later, in 1955. This change to the traditional five year-cycle was caused by the reconstruction of the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, which was promoted soon afterwards to the rank of a national institution. From 1955 onwards, the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition has been held in the National Philharmonic Hall every five years without a break.

    Frederick Chopin Society in Warsaw
The Frederick Chopin Museum at the Frederick Chopin Society in Warsaw was established in the 1930s. Already in 1935, the Frederick Chopin Institute, established a year earlier by 32 outstanding representatives of the world of culture and politics, headed by Karol Szymanowski, Emil Mlynarski, Stanislaw Niewiadomski, Jozef Beck and August Zaleski, had begun amassing a collection. At that time, thirteen extremely valuable manuscripts were purchased from Ludwika Ciechomska , granddaughter of Ludwika Jedrzejewiczowa, Chopin`s sister, and Boguslaw Kraszewski from Stary Kuplin. The manuscripts included: a complete autograph of the G minor Trio op. 8 for piano, violin and cello by Chopin, seven letters written at Szafarnia by the young composer to his family in 1824 (including four examples of the famous "Szafarnia Courier") and at Kowalewo [6 July 1827] as well as to his school friend Julian Fontana in Paris [1835], three special greetings addressed by Chopin to his father (6 December 1816 and 1818) and mother (16 June 1817) upon their name days as well as two dedications of 6 and 9 June 1833 for Jozef Nowakowski , a friend from the Warsaw Conservatory. These autographs of the Polish artist were the start of the collection for the future Chopin Museum which after the Second World War became much more active. The creation of a Collection of Photographs, Recordings and a Library was started prior to 1939. It must be stressed that thanks to the self-sacrifice and industriousness of Mieczyslaw Idzikowski, a founding member of the Frederick Chopin Institute, the autoographs were not damaged during the War Two.

Yet i can understand why one would grow weary of it, especially of to its persistent melancholy and overemotional intensity. the problem is really that his music is being overplayed in a fake and sappy manner by every pianist who lays claim to the title. Anyone getting fed up of chopin needs to take a break and get reacquainted to his music with more novel interpretations. I recommend Maria joao Pires, and Argerich among others who have some more unique and masculine or even erratic interpretations which i find refreshing. Frederic Chopin.
The musical talent of Fryderyk became apparent extremely early on, and it was compared with the childhood genius of Mozart. Already at the age of 7, Fryderyk was the author of two polonaises (in G minor and B flat major), the first being published in the engraving workshop of Father Cybulski. The prodigy was featured in the Warsaw newspapers, and "little Chopin" became the attraction and ornament of receptions given in the aristocratic salons of the capital. He also began giving public charity concerts. His first professional piano lessons, given to him by Wojciech Zywny (b. 1756 in Bohemia), lasted from 1816 to 1822, when the teacher was no longer able to give any more help to the pupil whose skills surpassed his own. The further development of Fryderyk's talent was supervised by Wilhelm Würfel (b.1791 in Bohemia), the renowned pianist and professor at the Warsaw Conservatory who was to offer valuable, although irregular, advice as regards playing the piano and organ.
