A Red-Hot Weekend
by Tony Lombardi and Jim Primock
The spectacular opening night of this weekend set the pace for the best festival ever brought to Colorado. The big sky was clear and temperatures in the 70s made it a perfect night to be outdoors. The idea to have a 3-day event was a huge risk, given the chance of rain. But the rain was not to be. Everything lined up to make a sure-fire splash for the entire weekend. The preparation and coordination were executed with success by the promoters and volunteers. The performers played intensely, some playing the best sets that I have seen them do. And there was no shortage of Blues stars being in town for this event.

PRAYER CORNER

If you have updates on any listed here, please let me know. Especially would like to ask you to keep an eye on the obituary column of the Hobbs News-Sun online - there are HHS alumni showing there, but I need their HHS year, so if you see someone there and know the year, please let me know. Thank you for your help.
3/9/03 - Add Robbie (Allison) McPeters ('64) to your prayers. She had a tumor removed on Friday. It was very small, about size of a pea, but was malignant. She will go back to the doctor on Tuesday to determine a course of treatment. Because it was very self-contained, the outlook is more positive, but you never can tell about these things. She is doing fine but very sore, of course.
3/23/03 - Robbie's second surgery (to remove a lymph node for testing) went great Friday. She starts radiation on Monday twice a day for 5 days then is finished! She gets the results back from the lymph node they sent off in 10 days, that will determine if she needs chemo.
03/30/03 - Please pray for the family of Louis Adams of Hobbs who passed away Friday, March 28th. He is survived by three sons, Robert L. Adams of Bogalusa, La., David L. Adams of Mountainburg, Ark., and Stephen E. Adams of Lakewood, Calif.; two daughters, Elsie M. (Adams) Love (’62) of Fairfax, Va., and Rebecca S. Hurst of Wimberly, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Earth Girls Are Easy
Vestron, 1989, Color, 100 minutes, ***
Synopsis: When a spaceship crashes into Los Angeles manicurist Geena Davis' swimming pool, she helps the fur-covered, sex-crazed crew (Jim Carrey, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans) disguise themselves as Earthlings and assimilate into the Southern California lifestyle. Zany, song-filled parody of '50s sci-fi and Valley Girl culture also stars Julie Brown, Michael McKean.
Commentary: Looking for a deep, thought-provoking, intellectual musical? This is definitely not it. What it is, is, a lot of fun with some good laughs and some entertaining musical numbers - not to mention Geena Davis running around in a skimpy bikini! Just kick back and enjoy! It won't hurt much.

"If all other books on trail driving were destroyed, a reader could still get a just and authentic conception of trail men, trail work, range cattle, cow horses, and the cow country in general from The Log of a Cowboy . It is a novel without a plot, a woman, character development, or sustained dramatic incidents; yet it is the classic of the occupation. It is a simple, straightaway narrative that takes a trail herd from the Rio Grande to the Canadian line, the hands talking as naturally as cows chew cuds, every page illuminated by an easy intimacy with life."
