FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will perform its last concert of the season at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Saturday, May 6 at 8 p.m. Guest artist is pianist Yefim Bronfman. David Shifrin, artistic director, has announced that the following musicians will perform: Tara Helen O'Connor, piccolo; Ransom Wilson, flute; Stephen Taylor, oboe; Randall Ellis, English horn; David Shifrin and David Singer, clarinet; Dennis Smylie, bass clarinet; Milan Turkovic, bassoon; Harry Searing, contrabassoon; William Purvis and Robert Routch, French horn; Raymond Mase, trumpet; David Taylor, trombone; Cho-Liang Lin, violin; Yefim Bronfman, piano; and Joseph Silverstein, conductor. Highlights of the program include Bronfman's solo of Beethoven's "Fantasy for Piano in G minor;" Berg's "Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano," featuring Shifrin and Bronfman; Lin and Bronfman playing Beethoven's "Sonata No. 5 for Violin;" and the grand finale, Berg's "Kammerkonzert for Piano, Violin and Thirteen Wind Instruments," using the talents of all 16 musicians. In 1999, pianist Yefim Bronfman soloed in concerts with the Israel Philharmonic, Zubin Mehta conducting, at the Salzburg and Lucerne festivals and recorded Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 2" with James Levine and the Philharmonia Orchestra for the sound-track of the new Disney film, "Fantasia 2000." He joined the Philadelphia Orchestra in celebration of its centenary, appearing as soloist under Wolfgang Sawallisch in Philadelphia, at Carnegie Hall and on the orchestra's three-week European tour.

Still Waiting: Pianist Yefim Bronfman energized the audience at the San Jose Symphony's last installment of the Russian Festival. Demonic Force Guest soloist Yefim Bronfman powered through Rachmaninoff concerto By Scott MacClelland N The most intriguing of all, Prokofiev's obscure Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, was replaced at the last minute by Shostakovich's rarely heard Cello Concerto no. 1 (a happy substitution, it must be said). But what was Gliere's unfamiliar, if lightweight, Harp Concerto doing in a Familiar Classics program? Grin's Russian Festival will be remembered as much for what it was not, as for what it was. Worthier music than some of his selections abounds and gets almost no play these days. In future, the idea should be expanded to accommodate symphonic works by Balakirev, Borodin (the real thing), Kalinnikov, Scriabin and Glazunov and the now-almost-forgotten but still sensational concertos by Khachaturian. (And there are plenty more where these come from.) For the (Friday night) final program in this miniseries, Grin and his orchestra delivered a barn-burning performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 5 in E Minor, a boldly declarative statement altogether in the spirit and style of the composer's powerful conception. In particular, the second movement, from its soaring horn melody (thank you, Wendell Rider) to its thunderous outbursts, raised the level of horsepower and exposed a grand view.

Emanuel Ax is renowned not only for his poetic temperament and unsurpassed virtuosity, but also for the exceptional breadth of his performing activity. Each season his distinguished career includes appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls, a variety of chamber music collaborations, the commissioning and performance of new music, and additions to his acclaimed discography on Sony Classical.
New music will figure prominently in another of Mr. Ax's notable undertakings during the 2001-2002 season: the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's piano concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, which he will perform both in Carnegie Hall and in Philadelphia. Other highlights of his season include a duo recital tour with pianist Yefim Bronfman; the gala opening concert of Philadelphia's new Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, with Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and the Philadelphia Orchestra; and performances with the Israel Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, NHK Symphony in Tokyo, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, National Symphony and the Toronto Symphony.
Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. His studies in the Pre-College Division of Juilliard were greatly supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award. His piano teacher was Mieczylaw Munz. Mr. Ax, a graduate of Columbia University where he majored in French, resides in New York City with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, their son, Joseph, and their daughter, Sarah.

Cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Yefim Bronfman presented a duo recital Friday evening at the Union Theater that was as close to perfect as I can imagine a concert being. Both are masters of their instrument, Harrell now enjoying the fruits of a long and continuously illustrious career, Bronfman still a relatively young virtuoso (37 in a couple months) who is startlingly good and will surely go on to real greatness. The program was especially seductive for me, as it opened with what may be my favorite two works for cello and piano. Debussy's Sonata No.1 in D Minor (1915) is among many other things a work of great technical difficulty, especially in the matter of the two players being perfectly together in the course of its quickly varying tempi and rhythms. Really good ensemble is one of chamber music's most elusive goals, though there wasn't the slightest evidence of a single bump in this entire concert. Which of two great instruments Harrell uses we heard, I can't say, but his playing of the Debussy brought from it the richest possible full sound and the most delicate imaginable pianissimos, Bronfman perfectly matching these dynamic and tonal ranges. Then too, there's the piece itself, but to know much more about that, one simply has to hear it.

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2002 Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, No. 2 in B flat . Aspen Festival Orchestra, David Zinman, conductor; Yefim Bronfman, piano. July 18, Benedict Music Tent, Aspen, Colorado (HS)
We all go to live concerts hoping for the magic. You know it when you hear it, when the music lifts itself into another sphere, when the communication between the performers and the audience slips into another gear, when breathtaking beauty occurs before our very ears. It happened Thursday evening at the Aspen Music Festival in the slow movement of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2. Conductor David Zinman , the festival's music director, drew preternaturally hushed playing from the Aspen Festival Orchestra, laying down the merest whisper of chords. Cellist Richard Weiss, who spends most of the year as first assistant principal for the Cleveland Orchestra, spun out the long solo in a magnificent arc while pianist Yefim Bronfman wove a spell of perfect embroidery around it.

Prepped in the disciplinarian Soviet system but later taught the more thoughtful Central European approach by Rudolf Serkin and Rudolf Firkusny, he boasts a repertoire that goes beyond the Germanic and Russian romanticism favored by many of his erstwhile compatriots. Bronfman can't be accused of having Kissin's soulful, lyrical touch. Not, anyway, for the recital he gave Wednesday night in Ravinia's Martin Theatre. In the first half of a program that was demanding for him and the audience, he included music so relentlessly percussive as to overshadow the stormy patches in Berg's Piano Sonata, Op. 1, which opened the concert. The Berg, impetuous and impatient in mood and filled with late Romantic gestures though hinting at a more anxious psychodramatic style to come, was piloted by Bronfman with a sure grasp of the dynamics. His performance set the stage for Esa-Pekka Salonen's "Dichotomie."

Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet - excerpts
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's promenade concert under its music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, like the proverbial curate's egg, was bad in parts.
Salonen's account of Debussy's Iberia was highly polished yet curiously, clinically sterile - surely not what the composer intended. The orchestral textures were smoothed out, having the silky characteristics of a Guilini interpretation. The second movement was scentless and passionless, and as I scanned the audience they seemed bored. The castanets seemed curiously mechanical, while the woodwind were woolly and dull. The strings were suave but lacked attack; Salonen seemed as detached from this score as the orchestra - it just never took off. Listening to Toscanini's 1938 paradigmatic account of Iberia with the NBC Symphony Orchestra illustrates perfectly where Salonen went wrong.
