Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein was a performer, a conductor, and a composer. His parents, Sam and Jennie Bernstein, who were of Russian-Jewish heritage, were not musicians. When Leonard was ten years old, he became fascinated with the piano, and asked his father if he could have lessons. Mr. Bernstein, who at first was not happy about the idea, said yes. Leonard practiced all the time and learned so fast that his teacher said he was a genius. Every spare minute he practiced the piano, listened to music, or tried to write his own music.
Leonard Bernstein began his college career at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While a student there, he met a famous conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos. Mitropoulos was very impressed with Bernstein, and suggested that he become a conductor too. Bernstein went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At Curtis, Bernstein studied piano, conducting, and composing.
During the summer, Bernstein went to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. There he met famous composers such as Aaron Copland , as well as conductors such as Serge Koussevitsky, who helped Bernstein with his career, and Artur Rodzinski, who later became conductor of the New York Philharmonic.

Bernstein's unsurpassed achievements boasts a lengthy list of accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in addition to an astounding eleven Emmy's. An educator and advocate for American composers, he also established The Young People's Concerts in 1958, a televised, award-winning program promoting young American talent. Some of Bernstein's most significant works include his orchestra symphonies, Facsimile, Fancy Free and Kaddish, and his musical theatre scores for Candide, Wonderful Town and the famed production, West Side Story.

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) - formidable musician
Although having a huge reputation as an interpreter and composer of classical music, Bernstein is probably most readily associated with musicals in general and West Side Story in particular. This is a modern reworking of the Romeo and Juliet story for stage and film. Full of Latin rhythms the musical manages to have New York gang members sing and dance and yet still seem tough and threatening. Anyone seeing the making of the album of West Side Story with Jose Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa will agree with the description of Bernstein as "formidable" but he was formidable also in the sense of the breadth of his musical taste and experience and the total dedication to his art. Bernstein was a hard-working musician, starting out initially as a pianist. He studied at Harvard University where was coached by Walter Piston and Aaron Copland (with whom he formed a life-long musical association). Then at Tanglewood Music Centre he studied with Serge Koussevitzky. These influences led him from full-time performing into the art of composing. He became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where a particular event gave him instant acclaim and a widespread following. Bruno Walter was to conduct a significant concert by the orchestra which was to be broadcast live on Radio. Walter was unable to fulfil this engagement and the principle conductor (Artur Rodzinski, who had appointed Bernstein) was away, and so Bernstein was called upon to fill in. He later became the orchestra's musical director, and was to become one of the foremost conductors of the day, leading orchestras throughout the world and gaining a reputation for his interpretations of composers such as

The British novelist Colin Wilson claimed that Bernstein's decision to dedicate the work to the memory of John F. Kennedy was another manifestation of Kennedy's bad luck - 'nothing quite as bad as this overtook him while he was alive', he concludes. Yet musically the score is a typically diverse concoction of grand Mahlerian tunes with splashes of jazz and bouncy 'Lenny' rhythms. These are the same ingredients that make West Side Story, Chichester Psalms and the Serenade for violin, strings, harp and percussion so approachable and well-liked. So why does 'Kaddish' continue to puzzle and goad listeners? Partly because Bernstein meant it to. In Jewish life the traditional 'Kaddish' prayer is a paean to God to be sung at the graveside of the dead and, unlike West Side Story or Chichester Psalms (which followed 'Kaddish' in 1965), the symphony is a deliberate act of provocation. It poses important questions about approaches to religious faith and - in an extension of the solo pianist's role as protagonist in 'The Age of Anxiety' - the speaker recites a text of Bernstein's own composition that tells of Man's struggle with God. It's often claimed that this text is in questionable taste or even blasphemous. At one point the speaker queries God's position as divine creator ('Your bargain [with Man] is tin! It crumples in my hand!') but the ability to engage in a dialogue with God is a central plank of Jewish theology.

From the September 29 - October 14, 2002 Program Book This is the second installment in a season-long series, written by noted musicologist and annotator Jim Svejda, chronicling the musical life of James DePreist. DePreist seemed ideal for the State Department tour because of his sheer versatility as composer, arranger (for Stan Kenton), pianist, conductor, percussionist (included in the First Edition of Encyclopaedia of Jazz) and lecturer. From Thailand to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Beirut and Cairo, DePreist did all of these things and found the one he could not do without. Leonard Bernstein was right! didn't want to study law. At the Philadelphia Conservatory he studied harmony, orchestration and composition with Vincent Persichetti and slowly began to think of himself as a composer. In 1959, his ballet Vision of America was mounted by the Philadelphia Dance Academy with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra playing in the pit. As the conductor who had been engaged was unavailable, the young composer was forced to conduct his own work. "I enjoyed conducting the piece almost as much as I enjoyed writing it," DePreist would later recall. "But I still had no idea what I wanted to do, though I began thinking vaguely of becoming a film composer."

Leonard Bernstein was the first American musician to achieve worldwide recognition; known as a conductor, composer, pianist, author and teacher. He was born Louis Bernstein in Lawrence, Massachusetts on August 25th 1918. From an early age he was known as Leonard and changed his name officially to this at age sixteen. He grew up in Boston and studied at the Boston Latin School. After graduating from Harvard in 1939 he continued his studies at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, including conducting with Fritz Reiner.
Bernstein's summers were spent studying with and as the assistant of Serge Koussevitsky at Tanglewood before being hired in 1943 as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic by Artur Rodzinski. In November the same year he made front-page headlines by replacing an ailing Bruno Walter in a national radio broadcast at the tender age of 25.
In the years following, Bernstein served as Music Director of the New York City Symphony, as head of the conducting faculty at the Berkshire Music Center (Tanglewood) and as Professor of Music at Brandeis University. He conducted most of the world's major orchestras and was the first American to conduct at the Teatro Alla Scala (La Scala) in Milan during the regular season. As a composer, Bernstein created works over a wide range of forms and styles : three symphonies (
