At the age of five his mother started teaching him the piano, and he gave his first concert at the age of seven. In 1952, the family moved to Israel , but two years later Barenboim was taken to Salzburg, Austria to study conducting with Igor Markevich. From there, Barenboim traveled to Paris to study composition with Nadia Boulanger. Two Argentinian musicians, Artur Rubinstein and Adolf Busch, also influenced Barenboim greatly in his career. Barenboim debuted in both Vienna and Rome in 1952. In 1955, he performed in Paris , and in 1956 in London . In 1957, he played in New York with Leopold Stokowski conducting in Symphony of the Air . DANIEL BARENBOIM 23 December 2002 8pm-8.30pm; rpt 24 December 1.30am-2am A transatlantic superstar, one half of the classical music world's most golden ever couple, and long-time leader of two of the world's foremost orchestras, Daniel Barenboim nevertheless maintains a work schedule that takes him all over the world. Both a pianist and conductor, he says simply, "I like to work and I like variety." Born in Buenos Aires but raised in Israel, Barenboim was the son of two Russian-Jewish piano teachers, and enjoyed a childhood, during which "it never dawned on me that there were people who didn't play". The Barenboims' young prodigy had performed his first concert by the age of seven, and completed his first world tour at 18. Soon Barenboim came to Europe in search of work and was, by the early 60s, settled in London. Barenboim is no stranger to controversy, either professional or personal. With his wife, the magically gifted but tragically fated cellist Jacqueline du Pre, Barenboim enjoyed the most celebrated musical marriage of his generation.

MEET THE ARTIST: DANIEL BARENBOIM
By Fred Plotkin
For the gala opening of its 112th season, Carnegie Hall, New York's landmark temple of music, drew upon the artistry of a great orchestra and conductor who played popular music in an unusual way.
Daniel Barenboim, the prodigiously talented conductor and pianist, led the Chicago Symphony in works inspired by Spain. Barenboim, who was born in Argentina and is now an Israeli citizen, is a musician with an internationalist's approach, equally at home playing Beethoven or tangos, conducting symphony orchestras or great opera companies.
This year is one of many anniversaries for Barenboim, who became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991. He was born in Buenos Aires in 1942, sixty years ago November 15, and studied piano with his parents. He made his debut at the age of seven and performed in Europe for the first time 50 years ago, playing in Rome and Vienna in 1952. In that same year, his family immigrated to Israel, where he continued his musical education. He later studied conducting, and appeared for the first time as a conductor in 1962.
Although he is the music director of the Chicago Symphony as well as the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin, Barenboim continues a very active career as a pianist. This includes playing concertos while conducting, as well as performing chamber music and accompanying singers such as Cecilia Bartoli in recitals. In 1999, at Carnegie Hall, he pulled off the astonishing feat of conducting and playing the five

WORLD-RENOWNED PIANIST PLAYS AT BIRZEIT UNIVERSITY
Birzeit, January 29 1999 Birzeit University proudly hosted a piano recital by world-renowned conductor / pianist Daniel Barenboim on Friday, January 29. Daniel Barenboim's concert was unique because it marked the first time an artist of such stature from outside the Arab world has performed in Palestine. The conductor / pianist, is considered a cultural icon worldwide, and his appearance at Birzeit University made a profound statement in support of Palestinian cultural life. Daniel Barenboim was invited to Palestine by the National Conservatory of Music at Birzeit University, and Tania Nasir, a tireless organizer of artistic and cultural events at the University. Barenboim had invited Mrs. Nasir to a recent recital in Jerusalem, after which he dedicated the encore to her. Nasirwho, as a West Bank Palestinian is allowed to visit Jerusalem only with Israeli permissionwas so moved by Barenboim's performance and dedication, that she extended an invitation. The pianist immediately accepted, even though he had never previously performed, or even visited, an Arab country. Barenboim's interest in Palestine grew through contact with his friend Edward Said, Columbia University Professor of Comparative Literature, who attended this performance with the purpose of presenting the pianist to the Palestinian public.

http://www.warnerclassics.com/teldec/a/barenboim/biography.html
Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires in 1942 to parents of Jewish Russian descent. He started piano lessons at the age of five with his mother, continuing to study with his father who remained his only other teacher. In August 1950, when he was only seven years old, he gave his first official concert in Buenos Aires. Important influences in his development as a musician included Artur Rubinstein and Adolf Busch, both of whom performed in Argentina. The Barenboim family moved to Israel in 1952. Two years later, in the summer of 1954, the parents brought their son to Salzburg to take part in Igor Markevich's conducting classes. During that same summer he also met Wilhelm Furtwängler, played for him and attended some of the great conductor's rehearsals and a concert. Furtwängler subsequently wrote a letter including the words, "The eleven year-old Barenboim is a phenomenon …" that was to open many doors to Daniel Barenboim for a long time afterwards. In 1955 the young Daniel Barenboim studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Daniel Barenboim made his début as a pianist in Vienna and Rome in 1952, and in New York in 1957 with Leopold Stokowski conducting the Symphony of the Air.

Daniel Barenboim conducts Wagner in Israel
By Fred Mazelis 1 August 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author A concert that took place in Jerusalem on July 7 produced an uproar in Israel and headlines around the world. The occasion was a performance by the visiting Berlin Staatskapelle orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. www.daniel-barenboim.com/journal/wagner.htm Barenboim points out that Arturo Toscanini, the noted opponent of fascism who refused to perform at Bayreuth because of the Nazis, conducted the then Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Wagner in the 1930s, without objection. It was only after the Kristallnacht pogrom in Germany in 1938 that the orchestra decided that it would not play Wagner because of his associations with the Hitler regime. The Argentine-born pianist and conductor is a major contemporary musical figure and an intellectual who has some interesting things to say about the relationship between music, history and society as a whole. Daniel Barenboim dirigiert Wagner in Israel

During the same period, Mr. Barenboim started to devote more time to conducting, and, in 1965, he established a close relationship with the English Chamber Orchestra that was to last for more than a decade. Together they played innumerable concerts in England, the United States, and Japan. Mr. Barenboim made his conducting debut in London with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in 1967, Berlin in 1969, and in New York soon after that.
