A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

Ravel Rhapsodie espagnole In the Janacek's Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen , Vladimir Ashkenazy did not seem to be really conducting or leading the orchestra; he had no sense of the dramatic contour of the work, sounding as it did so totally disjointed and uncoordinated. A disappointing start to the evening. Things improved somewhat with Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, played with great passion and precision by Helene Grimaud; this wonderful pianist combines great intelligence with a dazzling technique, her incredibly nimble fingers making short work of even the most difficult arpeggios. Unlike her conductor, she had total control, flare and rhythmic vitality. Unfortunately, sometimes her playing was engulfed by the hall's notoriously dry acoustic, and on occasion even drowned out by the orchestra’s excessively loud playing, due entirely to Ashkenazy's bombastic conducting. Being a renowned pianist himself, fellow feeling at least should have produced a far more sympathetic and sensitive accompaniment.

Vladimir Ashkenazy Rachmaninov: Piano Transcriptions (Decca) Transcription - arranging a piece of existing music for a different instrument - has a long and illustrious history. In an age before recorded music, transcriptions enabled music lovers to more easily access orchestral and operatic repertoire and virtuosos to display their wit and ferocious keyboard talent. Bach metamorphosed simple hymn tunes into complex chorale preludes for organ; Liszt realised Schubert songs, among a multitude of other composers works, as florid fantasies. Flight of the Bumblebee (which can sting the fingers of the most dextrous pianist).

Issue Date: AUGUST 1986 Volume: Page: MUSIC Vladimir Ashkenazy: "Nothing by Halves" BY PAULINE LONGFELLOW AND DANIEL BURGART Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of the finest pianists this century has produced, and he has in the past decade become a formidable conductor as well. Born in the Soviet Union, but having lived in the West since 1963, he is a man who has not only devoted his life to music, but has also searched for absolute values upon which to base his lifevalues distinct from the vastly different but nonetheless often compromised standards of both Soviet and Western society. His life and his insights, as well as his superlative music-making, are a continuing source of soul-searching and inspiration. Ashkenazy was born on July 6, 1937, in the city of Gorki, about 250 miles east of Moscow on the river Volga. His father David was of Jewish lineage, but did not retain his forefathers' faith or traditions. Ashkenazy's mother, Evstolia, was of pure Russian descent. The infant Vladimir was baptized into the Russian Orthodox Church, and he says he still feels close to Orthodox Christian ideas, at least in principle. Ashkenazy's father was a variety-show pianist of astonishing improvisational ability and versatility. Because he was almost constantly away on tour, it was Ashkenazy's mother who brought him up and oversaw his education. The family moved to Moscow, where at the age of six Ashkenazy began studying the piano. He showed extraordinary talent, and when he was eight, after a rigorous examination before a panel of professors, he was accepted into the Central Music School, which acts as a kind of junior school for the Moscow Conservatoire.

pianist of high cultural level. probably, only early Righter Melody and ashkenazy'srecord at DECCA would be given priority before vladimir Mischouk's record
http://www.csa.ru/Mischouk/english/revue.html
''Natural piano recital of the Piano Concerto by Tchaikovsky No 1 in b-moll op.23: legible accents, pearl modulations, clear intonations and musical illumination all these are apparent in the first concert at "Alte Oper" and brings closer to the attentive audience that Magnificence of Art for which they are craving. Vladimir Mischouk, 22 year old pianist from St.-Petersburg, The All-Russian Piano Competition Laureate in Moscow and The Brussels International Competition Laureate, did everything in his power to produce a prolonged exquisite impression. Brilliance and concentration are the hallmark of his playing enabling these two predominant qualities to merge into one complete majestic whole''. B.Schultse
"Frankfurte Algemeine Zeitung" (Germany)
''Mischouk's playing is absolutely free from any artificiality or complications and despite his age is amazingly mature possessing the best qualities of the Russian Pianist. His musical experiences are deeply profound and sincere, every sound detail being elegantly moulded making the general background soft and warm. He easily masters all technical devices. These are the main distinctive features of Mischouk's artistic manner''.

Each piece is not its own track on the CD. They are paired. The Bottom Line Chopin's Etudes are marvelous, both for their technical and musical qualities. Full Review From www.dictionary.com - Etude n : a short composition for a solo instrument; intended as an exercise or to demonstrate technical virtuosity Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) was one of the most brilliant composers and musicians of the Romantic era. Having been mostly self-taught, the bulk of his work was for the piano. Somewhere around 1832-1836, he composed a series of studies, or Etudes, to demonstrate his technical virtuosity. This CD contains all of Chopin’s etudes together, by legendary pianist, Vladimir Ashkenazy. Tracks: 12 Etudes, Op. 10

Ashkenazy is much more often heard as a conductor than as pianist these days, but when he does go back to the keyboard he still provides a reminder of what an exceptional artist he can be. There is nothing substantial in this collection of the arrangements Rachmaninov made to embroider his own recital programmes - everything from a suite extracted from Bach's E major Violin Partita and the scherzo from Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream music to The Flight of the Bumblebee and even The Star-Spangled Banner - but Ashkenazy presents every piece immaculately and winningly. There's a handful of original pieces too - morsels for four and six hands at one piano, in which Ashkenazy is joined by his son Vovka and wife Dody - as well as an Italian Polka for piano duet and trumpet, all fun and all perfectly judged.

Great Piano Concertos Decca has gotten around the perennial problem of filling Mozart Piano Concerto CDs by splitting No. 25 between two discs, giving us 155 minutes of Mozart for the price of a single top-line CD. The performances are top-line, too, if you like big-orchestra Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.Vladimir Ashkenazy performs this music in a public, large-auditorium style, without the intimacy or niceties we hear from period instruments or from such pianists as Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. His own cadenzas for three of the concertos are also very extrovertedand, alas, not very imaginative. Also, there are a few moments when the orchestra might have benefited from a firmer hand on the tiller than the pianist-conductor can provide. Overall, though, these are dramatic, involving Mozart performances, even if their style belongs more to the past than to the present.
