After winning the Bolzano and Geneva Piano Competitions in 1957, and the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 1965, the name of Argentine pianist Martha Argerich was catapulted to worldwide prominence. Flashes in the pan dazzle and fizzle out, but Argerich has grown from strength to strength, hailed right from the very outset as a virtuoso of the highest order destined to be remembered as one of the veritable giants of the keyboard in this century. Apart from her gloriously incandescent pianism and voluptuous, blazing personality, she is also best-known for her enigmatic, elusive personality. Even now, I find it hard to imagine a keyboard giant and flamboyant entertainer like her, capable of the most fearless bravura, to fear performing so much that she had decided to give up a significant part of it altogether: Indeed, since the mid-80s, Argerich's prolonged absence from both the studios and the concert-stage in solo piano repertoire is both baffling and frustrating to her many admirers.

She is perhaps the greatest living pianist of our time, with a following every bit as rabid and loyal as that of any major rock star or band, and her fans can be forgiven for thinking her one of those who breathe the rarefied air of Mount Olympus. In my own case, it was upon hearing Martha's rendition of J.S. Bach's

Martha Argerich Plays J. S. Bach!
J. S. Bach played with a refreshing spontaneityyes, even excitement! (originally written January 2001)
I’m only a few decades late, but I finally made this fantastic pianist's acquaintance recently, through a Toccata , a Partita , and an English Suite composed by my beloved J. S. Bach . All found on a CD purchased on the spur of the moment, music unheard, with the belief that Deutsche Grammophon Records could not be exaggerating when they included Martha Argerich in the re-releases of their "Legendary Recordings" series. And Philips Classics/DG/EMI Classics have picked her for their "Century’s Greatest Pianists" lineup. How could I go wrong with all that endorsement? Argerich is absolutely phenomenal. Her playing is infused with a fantastically wide spectrum of emotional color and tone that takes your breath away and makes your heart beat faster, blessed as she is with a clean and nimble technique, and a powerful playing style that is also very tightly controlled. She plays with a pure kind of energy and a spontaneity that few other pianists can match, and it feels wonderful and moving and thrilling. And everything sounds so effortless! It’s a bit difficult for me to not sink into clichéd superlatives when describing her overwhelming pianistic talent, but it’s all I can do to capture her essence. She has been dubbed the "genius" of her generation, and in her case it is no facile hyperbole.

Why does such a mixed audience, younger than usual, come to the Theatre des Champs-Elysees? Why does one go to a concert? To sacrifice ourselves to a social rite ? No, that time has long since passed. One goes to concert, one listens to music, because it helps to 'live'... We are here to share an emotion, to take part in an adventure, to follow a steep path watched by danger. How one can imagine what an audience must have felt going to listen to Maria Callas, whose weaknesses even were beautiful. Liberation is right - they're 'the last ones to light the fire.' Liquid phrasing
Argerich plays Schumann -
reviewed by JOHN BELL YOUNG
'Ms Argerich and company pay glowing tribute to the composer's most celebrated chamber works.' Few composers have enriched the chamber music repertoire as significantly as Robert Schumann whose evergreen piano quintet remains every bit as popular today as it was a century ago. Nor has its appeal as a vehicle for chamber ensembles and pianists diminished, and with good reason: its generosity of material, memorable themes and touching sentiment haunt the listener long after the last notes have died away. In 1994, pianist Martha Argerich, joined by a select group of colleagues all personal friends as well recorded these sumptuous works in an all-Schumann concert at the Concertgebouw in historic Nijmegen, Holland (not to be confused with the world renowned hall of the same name in Amsterdam). Nijmegen is an historic college town well known for its critical, strategic role in the Second World War. In this survey of Schumann, whose spirit is amply captured on this disc, Ms Argerich and company pay glowing tribute to the composer's most celebrated chamber works. Of course, Ms Argerich has by now become something of a cult figure in classical music culture, made all the more palpable by her recent bout with and victory over cancer. Her thick mane and earth-mother persona belie that underneath it all is a spectacular virtuoso of the first rank who is not so self-centered as to set herself above a collaborative effort. Thus in the abundantly lyrical Quintet, her jewel-like sound and liquid phrasing prove ideally suited to the larger, integral task of weaving in and out, stealth like, among the soaring lines and musical precipices of the string players.

In 1957, she won two major piano competitions within a few weeks, and her career as a professional pianist began. Argerich has not played solo concerts since the early years of her career, instead playing

A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

"I didn't want to be a pianist in the first place. I still don't want to be, but it is the only thing that I can do, more or less," says Martha Argerich, whose phenomenal pianistic command and utterly natural, spontaneous approach to both the instrument and the music have made her a legend in the profession.
Few members of the capacity audience at Carnegie Hall on
the evening of March 25, 2000, are likely to soon forget the occasion. For the first time in nearly 19 years,
Martha Argerich was scheduled to perform a solo
program-half of one, at least-and this was moenough to create a palpable sense of electricity in the auditorium. True, in recent years the Argentine pianist
had become a fairly regular visitor to New York, in spite of her reputation for frequent last minute cancellations. During the late 1990s, for instance, she
appeared several times as soloist with the visiting
Montreal Symphony and as a sonata partner of cellist Mischa Maisky. This time, however, she would offer solo repertory of Bach, Chopin, and Prokofiev and join forces with the Juilliard Quartet and with fellow pianist

Updated daily Monday through Friday Wednesday, November 22, 2000 Pianist's visit sets music community on edge Published: November 22, 2000
Source: China Times egendary concert pianist Martha Argerich arrives in Taiwan today to mixed feeling from the local arts community as a sense of inadequacy mingles with the excitement accompanying the anticipation of Argerich's performance.
The music community is on pins and needles wondering whether the master pianist, a notorious perfectionist about her music, will find the acoustics at Taipei's Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall less than satisfactory.
Responding to such fears, Hsu Po-yun of New Aspect Productions laments, "Such is Taiwan's fate when politicians do not care about culture. We suffer from a lack of world-class performance spaces. For years people in the cultural community have cried out for help, but the government has just turned a deaf ear to our pleas."
This shortage of top-notch performance venues affects more than just classical music, and has kept numerous performers from working in Taiwan. Taiwan has no domed stadium to accommodate large rock concerts, and despite years of their best efforts, arts agencies have been unable to attract Broadway-style shows such as "Phantom of the Opera" and "Miss Saigon" to Taiwan due to deficient stage equipment. The severe lack of facilities puts added pressure on Taiwan's two finest performances spaces, Taipei's National Concert Hall and the National Theater, where staff members are so inundated with applications for limited performance space that they actually push the applications around in wheelbarrows. Invariably, this tragicomedy results in numerous scheduling controversies each year.

I t's too good to be true, but, Martha Argerich, the world's most prominent female pianist, is for the first time holding a festival in Taipei. The honor is a precious one considering that only Japan has an Argerich festival and that the pre-eminent Argentine pianist cancelled her Israel concert in favor of the Taipei venue. Last year, after three cancelations, Argerich finally arrived in Taipei for the first time and was impressed by the hospitality with which she was greeted. She agreed to come back from something more than just a concert as a result, Taipei residents will be able to enjoy the first ever Argerich festival in Taiwan. At a time when male pianists dominate the international music scene, Martha Argerich has managed to achieve a position towering above her many male counterparts. Aged 60, she is recognized as a peer of legendary Russian maestro Vladimir Horowitz and the idiosyncratic genius Glen Gould in other words, as one of the greats of the 20th century.

Martha Argerich, known for diva-ish last-minute cancellations (even of what was to be her New York Philharmonic debut, back in 1968), is finally making herself comfortable onstage. If she shows up, it should be great. Argerich has been treated for melanoma, which spread to her lungs and lymph nodes but is now in remission. But did you like it?
