The Leeds Piano Competition has long been revered in the music world. But now, amid rumours of favouritism, its integrity is being questioned

The Leeds International Pianoforte Competition , which creaks into action on Wednesday, is a grand old warhorse of an event. Founded in 1961 by the formidable Fanny Waterman, whom one former winner describes as "a combination of human dynamo and bulldozer", it boasts past winners of the calibre of Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu. But competitions aren't what they used to be. There was a day when being a prize-winner was a passport to celebrity. But now competitions are so numerous that winning at least something is fairly commonplace. They are also subject to accusations of infighting, poor decisions and corruption.

If the term "warm romanticism" or "warm lyricism" as the CD-booklet suggests, should be put to good use, a first description of these wonderful works would be the place in which to do so. Brahms was notorious in his inhuman demands on the musical production of his own. The Symphonies, coming so late in his production is one example of his standards of quality; the monumental shadow of Beethoven still lingering in the musical landscape. The violinsonatas is another example of the composer's selfimposed sensorship. As the opus numbers clearly show, they are all products of a mature artist. After several earlier and discarded attempts in the genre, these three works fortunately survived the composer's fear of failure. The sonatas was concieved and published in the period from 1878 (no.1), through 1886 (no.2) to 1888 (no.3).
The recording of Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova and Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski, renders the warmth and the wonderfully deep sonorous lines to perfection. Mullova is certainly no stranger to the music of the composer, with a highly acclaimed recording of his violinconcerto. And even in this condensed lyrical music, so different from the grandiose and majestic concerto she excells with her fantastic deep sonorous tone, and attention to the most minute of details. I absolutely love her phrasing which is delicate and raw at the same time.

[63:10] full-price by Jonathan Yungkans "There is something to be said for a churlish temperament," Marcel Marnat writes in the notes for this disc. Beethoven's greatest compositions were often born into the world much like pearls from an oyster-with a little sand and considerable irritation. One particular irritant was publisher Antonio Diabelli, whose "botched piece of cobbling," as Beethoven called the waltz in "Danube peasant" style that Diabelli sent in 1819, aroused Beethoven's ire to extremes. But the pearl brought forth from this intense annoyance four years later was one of extraordinary price-a piece that, perhaps more than Bach's Goldberg Variations, could be called an Everest of piano writing as well as a towering summation of its composer's keyboard style.

published June 9, 2002 PATTI AUSTIN, FOR ELLA (PLAYBOY JAZZ): Casual music listeners know Patti Austin for her easy-listening pop tunes with James Ingram. But the decades-long career of jazz diva Dinah Washington's goddaughter is solidly grounded in jazz and swing, and here Austin turns her attention to the music of scat queen Ella Fitzgerald. The results are tremendous. Backed by a 40-piece big band, with arrangements by Grammy-winner Patrick Williams, Austin pays tribute by putting her own spin on some of Fitzgerald's timeless classics. (She says in the liner notes it took a full day to whittle the choices to a manageable dozen.) Our Love Is Here To Stay gets a soulful, slow burn, Austin holding onto each syllable just long enough to hook a listener into this beautiful George Gershwin tune. She swings out on Hard Hearted Hannah (The Vamp of Savannah), and serves up a lovely, mournful gospel version of Cole Porter's Miss Otis Regrets.

It must have been hard to live as a composer in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century; after all your peers were Beethoven and Schubert! Such was the plight of the Irish-born composer John Field (1782-1837). On the other hand, Field had a successful career as a pianist. Not of the virtuoso Liszttian ilk, but rather one whose strength was color and sensitivity of touch. These characteristics emerge in Field's Fifth and Sixth Piano Concertos, The Fifth (1817) has the subtitle 'fire by lightning,' but the source of the title is unknown. It opens with a resounding Beethoven-like chord, but the music that follows more closely resembles the piano concertos of Chopin. The piano's role emphasizes delicate nuances, sonorous and intricate melodies, convincingly played by Benjamin Frith. The orchestral passages appropriately contrast the piano's role with drama and tension. The work brims with felicitous melodies and dramatic flourishes that engage the mind and heart. The Sixth Piano Concerto (1819) opens with a stately orchestral introduction that extends into an engaging 20 minute dialogue between piano and orchestra. A lovely, delicate larghetto is followed by an energetic but finely spun rondo. These concertos combine the drama and tension of Beethoven with the lyric delicacy of Chopin. Both are immensely enjoyable: they express the exuberant spirit of a composer who knew and loved the piano. Benjamin Frith plays with the freshness of discovery and wit that serve the composer perfectly. The Northern Sinfonia accompanies enthusiastically and the sound is clear and close, slightly wanting in reverberation. Those wanting to explore Field further are advised to try his Nocturnes, lovely, engaging pieces that admirably predate those of Chopin.

In his first recording for Virgin Classics the extraordinarily gifted Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski performs the work with which he has been most closely associated since the beginning of his career: Beethoven’s fiendishly difficult Diabelli Variations. Anderszewski’s very personal identification with this piano masterpiece has been documented by film-maker Bruno Monsaingeon, whose recent television film includes footage of the making of this recording.
‘A pianist of inspirational brilliance.’ The Guardian

79. On-Cue Profile - Alfredo Perl
At only thirty years of age, PolishHungarian pianist piotr Anderszewskiis already ranked amongst the great musical artists of his time.
http://www.oncueonline.com.au/oncue/profile/celebs/piotr_anderszewski/piotr_ande
He plays with imagination and sensitivity, he exudes personal charisma and he looks on the concert platform the way most movie stars would like to appear on screen. At only thirty years of age, Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski is already ranked amongst the great musical artists of his time. Geoffrey Norris, the UK Daily Telegraph's critic, enthused after he heard Anderszewski at Wigmore Hall: "[He] is an artist of such phenomenal gifts that he ought, by rights, to have audiences clamouring for seats, even if he chose to play at three o'clock in the morning in the Outer Hebrides." With critics consistently commenting on his mercurial intelligence, fierce individuality and boundless imagination, Piotr Anderszewski will make his Australian debut with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2001 - this will undoubtedly be an absorbing experience. A recent recording of Bach on Harmonia Mundi has been praised to the heights ('he makes musical complexity seem poetic and poetry sound heaven sent') , and a new TV documentary based around his performance of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations
