Little Miss Mozart
Christine Elizabeth Anderson The twenty-two year old award winning classical pianist, songwriter and singer takes audiences by storm with her unique fusion of classical masterpiece and crafty piano pop songwork. With slender fingers dancing across ivory and a throaty voice purring out song, she makes the only thing she believes in: music. Anderson began studying classical piano at the age of nine, after sitting down to an instrument for the first time ever and inexplicably knowing how to play. She began performing and adjudicating almost immediately, serving as the pianist for the Portland Youth Sinfonietta and collecting top Music Teachers Association awards and State Syllabus Honors. Educated at home like Anton Bruckner, Felix Mendelssohn, Amadeus Mozart, and Francis Poulenc, Anderson dedicated most of her waking hours to the mastery of her music. Her innate musical intuition naturally led her to compose, and in 1991, only months into her musical studies, she won 1st Place in the WMTA Young Composers' Project with a Sonatina for solo piano. A long string of other solo compositions soon followed among them sonatas, polonaises, nocturnes, and a concertino as well as a chamber symphony, a suite of jazz duets, and a collection of works for string ensemble. Anderson is presently in the studio recording tracks for Passenger Dream, her debut album of all original piano-vocal songwork. She also performs at boutique venues across the United States, from Los Angeles to Jeckyll Island.

Seeking Recent info on Christine Walevska I have been playing some of my older cello LPs this past week, while I have been on vacation and have been listening to several recorded by Christine Walevska (Walewska). She is a fine cellist, but strangely, little information can be found on the WWW about her. There is nothing listed in the ICS cellist pages and I have not been able to access Cello Heaven to see if any biography or links are listed there. She is portrayed in "The Great Cellists" by Margaret Campbell as being born in Los Angeles in 1948, studied under Piatigorsky, developed a successful career and then married and moved to Argentina and that she, at the time the book was written (1988), was living in Buenos Aires.
There is not much mention on the WWW, other than to list some of her recordings that have been re-issued on CD and some of her older LPs. One interesting site, posted by a Prof. Fabio Uccelli, has an extensive analysis/review of the Dvorak Cello Concerto. He states that Walevska's performance is one of the finest recordings of the work and goes into an extensive comparison with the recording made by Rostropovitch.

National talents set the stage for college musical
By AMY MCCLUSKEY
The Virginia Wesleyan College theater held auditions for Moll Flanders, the first musical the college has had in six years, on Nov. 5. Professor of Theater and Communications Bentley Anderson invited Richard Cheshire, a lecturer of drama and theater director, and Peter Golden, musical director, both from the University of Wales, to guest direct the musical. Anderson met Cheshire while on a Spring 1998 sabbatical to the University of Wales in the UK. Anderson and his wife traveled there to contribute to the University’s theater program. "I know what it is to be a guest director," said Anderson. While at the University of Wales, Anderson helped to judge over 65 senior directing projects. The University has one of the largest theater programs world-wide. Cheshire has directed many plays, and his arrival on Nov. 4, marked the first time the director has been to the United States. "He’s never even seen a Broadway play," said Anderson. "That is one of the reasons he is coming, so he can see how theater is done here." Moll Flanders is based on a novel written in 1722 by Daniel Defoe. The musical is about a woman, Moll Flanders, who desperately wants to be a good person but is inevitably forced into a life of crime. The musical is about women’s issues and poverty, and it takes stabs at the British merchant class.

The Holocaust drama "The Pianist" takes the top prize at the world's largest film festival
By RICHARD CORLISS
CHRISTOPHE ENA/AP Roman Polanski and his prize
Monday, May. 27, 2002
The critics' chagrin mounted through the 45-min. ceremony, as their preferred films got consolation prizes. The American "Punch-Drunk Love," starring Adam Sandler and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, shared the Best Direction prize with a Korean film, Im Kwon-taek's "Chihwaseon," that one festival insider had confidently said had won the Palme d'Or. "Bowling for Columbine," Michael Moore's rollicking guns-and-ammo documentary, was given a 55th Festival citation. The Scottish drama "Sweet Sixteen," about a teen drug-dealer who loves his mum, was generally considered one of the most compelling films of director Ken Loach's career, but it got only the Screenplay prize. Based on the 1946 memoir of pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman, and scripted by British playwright Ronald Harwood, the Polanski film teems with acute observations on the behavior of besieged people in ever more extreme circumstances. We see Szpilman (well played by the doleful Adrian Brody) and his family debating how to hide their valuables from Nazi snooping; the suspicions of their Polish neighbors ("They want to be better Nazis than Hitler"); the complicity of the "Jewish police" with their brutal masters; the degradations to which all Jews were forced in order to stay alive; the slow realization that sacrificing everything, including their precious dignity, would not save them from the Treblinka death camp. For Szpilman and the half-million other Jews sardined into the Ghetto, the issue of one's survival was as capricious as the number of shells left in a Nazi's pistol. By the end of the war only 20 Jews were still alive in Warsaw.

A smash hit from the West End, hilarious, thrilling and audience-involving spoof comedy was described by The Sunday Times After Daisy has survived many tribulations they almost succeed. But, of course, at the last minute Daisy pulls it off and in a magnificent climax she scores the winning goals in a vital hockey match, saves her arch-enemies from certain death in a nail-biting cliff rescue scene, discovers the hidden treasure of Grangewood, thereby saving the career of Clare, the much-loved head girl, and is reunited with her long-lost father. And all of this, Ladies and Gentlemen, we assure you, is absolutely live on stage!

The CD includes Night Prayers (1991) by the Georgian composer Kancheli, a long movement that forms part of the Life without Christmas cycle, composed in response to the civil war that had recently broken out in the republic. The music is permeated with great sadness and compassion for all those involved in the violence. From the opening bars, the piece embodies the tension between the difficulty of pursuing a spiritual life and the eternal hope that some good will eventually come of the tragedy.
Mugam Sajahi by Ali-Zadeh, on the other hand lays stress on the feeling of nostalgia characteristic of Muslim prayer and through the dialogue of the strings delineates the contours of an enclosed female sphere within the Islamic world.

Cannes - 2002 "What are your favorite films shown in the Cannes Competition?" Nothing quite yanked the chain of my European critic friends at the 2002 Festival like my stars-and-stripes, xenophobic, post-Sept.11 answer: "The American movies rock!" It was true, Eurodudes. Our USA went three for three where it counted: up the red carpet at the Palais in the Official Competition. Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth, Election) triumphed with his third straight clever, acerbic comedy, the Jack Nicholson-starring About Schmidt, and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) used Adam Sandler brilliantly in his loopy farce, Punch-Drunk Love. Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine, the first documentary selected for Competition since Louis Malle's Le Monde du Silence in the 1950s, was, les mains-down, the most popular film among Cannes' first-nighters. The gown-and-tuxedo gathered rewarded Moore's agit-prop movie essay about the violence-soaked USA with a ten-minute standing ovation. Finally, Woody Allen left his beloved New York for an Opening Night screening (out of Competition) of Hollywood Ending, which had already played theatres back home to tepid reviews and terrible box office. The French weren't crazy about the movie either, but Allen tamed skeptics with his calculatedly diplomatic words at a press conference. "The French people have been so supportive of my films and so affectionate to me, that I thought I'd show some gesture of repricocity and gratitude," Allen explained of his unexpected live appearance on the Cote d'Azure. "When I made Hollywood Ending, I looked at it and thought that the Cannes audience would get a particular enjoyment out of it."
