Physicists
You enter the laboratory and see an experiment. How will you know which class is it? If it's green and wiggles, it's biology.
If it stinks, it's chemistry.
If it doesn't work, it's physics. Seen on the door to a light-wave lab:
"CAUTION! Do not look into laser with remaining good eye." Absolute zero is cool. An engineer, a physicist, a mathematician, and a mystic were asked to name the greatest invention of all times.
The engineer chose fire, which gave humanity power over matter.
The physicist chose the wheel, which gave humanity the power over space.
The mathematician chose the alphabet, which gave humanity power over symbols. The mystic chose the thermos bottle.
"Why a thermos bottle?" the others asked. "Because the thermos keeps hot liquids hot in winter and cold liquids cold in summer." "Yes so what?" "Think about it." said the mystic reverently. That little bottle how does it know A hydrogen atom lost its electron and went to the police station to file a missing electron report. He was questioned by the police: "Haven't you just misplaced it somewhere? Are you sure that your electron is really lost?"

REVIEW
by D.H.Mellor
Durrenmatt's The Physicists
Adapted for Darwin College and presented by Origin in Darwin Hall, 5-6 December 1996
The Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt is a sort of dramatic Roal Dahl, writing macabre melodramas with a serious and sinister twist, a genre of which The Physicists is a fine if rather dated example. It was written in the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) world of the Cold War, when we all knew that friction between NATO and the Warsaw Pact might at any time provoke the use of nuclear weapons to wipe the earth ten times over. That prospect was a constant backdrop to our lives then, as it isn't now: the weapons still exist, of course, and madmen, terrorists, dictators and ideologues might still acquire and threaten to use them; but at least we no longer live in states whose defence relies on deterring enemies by threatening to destroy the world if they attack. This too is why spies are less fascinating now than they were in Bond's heyday, when the stakes they played for were apparently so much higher.

Physicists on the Money
Physicists have been honored by having their picture on currency in many countries around the world. Some are shown in small images below. Click on the colored text to view or down load a larger copy of the image. (The size of each image is shown in parentheses.) Abu Nasr Al-Farabi (870-950) appears on the 1 Tenge note from Kazakhstan. A scholar in many areas, including philosophy, linguistics, logic, and music. He also wrote about the nature of science and argued for the existence of the vacuum (empty space). For a brief bio click here . (26 K) Kristian Birkeland (1867-1917) appears on the Norwegian 200 Kroner note. Birkeland was a pioneer in studying the magnetic field of the earth and the aurora borealis. He made the suggestion that the aurora were caused by charges emitted by the sun being guided into the earth's atmosphere by the earth's magnetic field. An apparatus of his simulating this effect is shown on the bill at the left. For a brief bio click here . For a great site on the aurora

BEHIND THE HOAXERS - PHYSICISTS, SCIENTISTS, STOMPERS AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF CIRCLE FAKING by Marcus Allen
(from The Sussex Circular #33, September, 1994) An international organisation exists which appears to be solely concerned with debunking and ridiculing the work of others. This organisation is CSICOP - The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal. It was formed in 1976 by Professor Paul Kurtz as a breakaway group from the American Humanist Association. Paul Kurtz, born in 1925, is now retired as a philosophy lecturer at New York University. Politically, he is a Social Democrat, part of the American Non-Communist Left through which the CIA channeled funding from large American foundations such as Ford and Rockefeller, to promote liberalism in Europe during the Cold War. Kurtz was concerned about the revival of Astrology in the US, and circulated a letter to leading scientists and academics collecting 186 signatures, including those of 18 Nobel Prize winners, to a manifesto called "Objections to Astrology", the publication of which brought about the formation of CSICOP. Soon afterwards, Kurtz held a press conference in New York to announce "a campaign to purge the media of occultist leanings" and to ensure "no TV programs dealing with parascience would go out unvetted by the appropriate authorities", i.e. CSICOP. Among it's first members were science fiction writer Isaac Isimov, magician and showman James Randi, and astronomer and writer Professor Carl Sagan.

  • A doctoral degree is the usual educational requirement because most jobs are in basic research and development; a bachelor's or master's degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research and development. Because funding for research grows slowly, new Ph.D. graduates will face competition for basic research jobs.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Physicists explore and identify basic principles governing the structure and behavior of matter, the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction of matter and energy. Some physicists use these principles in theoretical areas, such as the nature of time and the origin of the universe; others apply their physics knowledge to practical areas, such as the development of advanced materials, electronic and optical devices, and medical equipment. Physicists design and perform experiments with lasers, cyclotrons, telescopes, mass spectrometers, and other equipment. Based on observations and analysis, they attempt to discover and explain laws describing the forces of nature, such as gravity, electromagnetism, and nuclear interactions. Physicists also find ways to apply physical laws and theories to problems in nuclear energy, electronics, optics, materials, communications, aerospace technology, navigation equipment, and medical instrumentation.
