Special programs of study and appropriate seminars can usually be arranged. Professor Daniel Kevles joined Yale on July 1, 2001 as the Stanley Woodward Professor of History. He focuses his research on the past and present interplay of science and society, the history of science in America, and the history of modern physics, modern biology and environmentalism, as described in this article in the Yale Bulletin and Calendar

At the end of the nineteenth century, some physicists believed that the basic principles underlying their subject were already known, and that physics in the future would only consist of filling in the details. They could hardly have been more wrong. The past century has seen the rise of quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, particle physics, and solid-state physics, among other fields. These subjects have fundamentally changed our understanding of space, time, and matter. They have also transformed daily life, inspiring a technological revolution that has included the development of radio, television, lasers, nuclear power, and computers. In Quantum Generations , Helge Kragh, one of the world's leading historians of physics, presents a sweeping account of these extraordinary achievements of the past one hundred years. The first comprehensive one-volume history of twentieth-century physics, the book takes us from the discovery of X rays in the mid-1890s to superstring theory in the 1990s. Unlike most previous histories of physics, written either from a scientific perspective or from a social and institutional perspective

As we shall see, very similar views continued to play an important role throughout the twentieth century. Although many of Hicks's contemporaries would have subscribed to his philosophy, by 1895, the vortex theory of atoms had been abandoned by most physicists. Decades of theoretical work had led to no real progress and the grand vortex program was degenerating into sterile mathematics. negative matter The hydrodynamic ether models differed from the Laplacian program in physics, but they nonetheless rested on mechanical ground and were not attempts to overthrow the Newtonian worldview. Hydrodynamics, after all, is the mechanical science of fluid bodies. Thermodynamics, the science of heat and other manifestations of energy, constituted a much more difficult problem for the classical worldview. This branch of physics was sometimes argued not only to be different from mechanics in principle, but also to have priority over mechanics as a more satisfactory foundation on which all of physics could be built. In the 1890s, together with electrodynamics, thermodynamics entered as a competitor to mechanics as far as foundational problems were concerned. In this decade, there was a continual discussion of the

A History of Physics at Purdue
The First Phase of the Lark-Horovitz Era, 1928-1942
-Solomon Gartenhaus, Arnold Tubis, and David Cassidy
The year 1928 marked major turning points both in physics and in the Depart ment of Physics at Purdue. Work by De Broglie, Heisenberg, Schrodinger and others in establishing the foundations of quantum mechanics during the prev ious several years culminated in the fall of 1928 in the controversial Copenhagen interpretation presented by Bohr and Heisenberg. As Heisenberg and B orn declared quantum mechanics complete and unchangeable to a conference in Belgium, a young Viennese physicist named Karl Lark-Horovitz began his appointment as a professor of physics at Purdue. Until his untimely death exactly thirty years later, Dr. Karl Lark-Horovitz elevated and maintained the Department of Physics in the leading ranks of modern physics research and teaching, rendering his mark upon it down to the present day.

Tell me when this page is updated SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

    The Professors of Physics
It is striking that since the beginnings of the department in 1871, the years from 1871 to 1988 were spanned by just four Professors of Physics:
    The Woods
Another part of the Department's history is associated with John F and Peter J Wood . Father and son, they were both lecturers in the Department of Physics and consecutively they taught physics at Newcastle between 1924 and 1988 - an unbroken time of 64 years. This unique achievement is commemorated by the Wood Memorial Lecture
    Other Professors of Physics
Many other members of staff have contributed to the development of the department as it exists today. Notable amongst these retired members of staff are those Professors who have held chairs with titles other than Physics:
    • George William Todd (Professor of experimental physics, 1919-1950)

This work is described in Moseley and X-rays at the University of Oxford (14 Kbytes) and you can still see some of his original apparatus in The Museum of the History of Science Charles Vernon BOYS determined G , the universal constant of gravitation, in the cellars of the Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford.
