Whitaker Experimentalists in high-energy physics are probing at the smallest scales of length to learn about the fundamental nature of elementary particles and the interactions between them. In addition they are performing precision tests of the standard model and searching for new physics beyond it. The goal of experimental astrophysics is to determine the nature of the universe through observations of radiation reaching the Earth from space. For further links to our research efforts, see:

Plasma Laser Astrophysics
Plasma recombination lasers in rapidly cooled stellar atmospheres.
Physicist Dr. Y. P. Varshni of the University of Ottawa made the startling discovery that some stars within our galaxy produce laser radiation. The Hubble Space Telescope and the Kuiper Airborne Observatory have confirmed that laser emissions can be produced by stars with violent stellar winds. These controversial observations have significant implications for cosmology.

FACULTY PROFILE: Bernard E Burke
Boston native and William A.M. Burden Professor of Astrophysics Bernard R. Burke completed his SB in 1950 and PhD in 1953 at MIT. In 1953, he joined the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution in Washington and became a section manager in 1957. Upon his return to MIT in 1965 as Professor of Physics, Professor Burke introduced interferometric techniques at the Haystack Radio Observatory in Westford, Massachusetts. As leader of RLE's research group in this area, he shared the 1971 Rumford Prize awarded by the Academy of A rts and Sciences. Together with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Canadian National Research Council, his research group developed techniques for very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI). This method uses atomic frequency standards to synchronize radio teles copes at remote locations around the world and has improved angular resolution for radio telescopes by 1000-fold. Professor Burke's group was also first to conduct inter- and transcontinental VLBI. Recently, he has served as the U.S. principal investigato r to develop orbiting VLBI stations and has also participated in European and Soviet VLBI mission studies. He has served as Visiting Professor at the University of Leiden (1971-72), Sherman Fairchild Scholar at the California Institute of Technology (1984- 85), and held a Smithsonian Regents Fellowship in 1985. In 1963, he received the Warner Prize of the Amer ican Astronomical Society and, in 1988, was corecipient of a NASA Group Achievement Award. He served as President of the American Astronomical Society (1986-88), is Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was elected to the National Acade my of Sciences in 1970. He chairs and serves on several advisory boards for NASA and the National Science Foundation, and participates on the editorial boards of many professional journals.

Skip Astronomy Home Directory Research ... Online UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies. UCSC is also a leader in astrophysics education. The department currently enrolls about twenty-five students working towards the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students benefit from the low student-faculty ratio in the department and extensive research opportunities, as well as course offerings that cover both theoretical and observational aspects of astronomy. UCSC alumni hold positions at leading universities and research institutes around the world. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Astrophysics, and collaborates with the Physics department to offer an undergraduate major in Astrophysics. The department is involved in several major interdisciplinary research projects. The Center for Adaptive Optics is an NSF Science and Technology Center that is studying new optical correction techniques with applications in both astronomy and vision science. It is based at UCSC, but involves researchers from nearly two dozen academic, governmental, and industrial partners. The Center for the Origin, Dynamics and Evolution of Planets is part of UCSC's branch of the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics. It brings together members of the Astronomy, Earth Sciences, and Physics departments to study planets in our Solar System and around other stars. Members of the Astronomy department interested in cosmology and high energy astrophysics also interact frequently with colleagues in the Physics department and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics.

Welcome to Astrophysics at IMSA
Spring Semester, 2003
Introduction
Astrophysics is the study of astronomical processes through the use of physics. Where astronomy traditionally is based on observing, astrophysics applies the principles of physics to ask "why?" and to make predictions. Asking "why?" sounds a lot like " inquiry " doesn't it? It is the intention of this course and this web site to offer students a portal into inquiry in the space sciences. Here you will find many resources developed in-house and many more links to non-IMSA sites. You will not find this site to be an online textbook or a cookie-cutter course aimed at teaching you everything there is to know about astrophysics. It is, instead, your springboard for inquiry into the subject The basic structure of the course is rather fluid. It is designed so that the student can investigate questions of interest or pertinence in the space sciences. The course covers the basic topics from any good astrophysics course, but is designed around four central topics:
The size and scale of the universe
Energy and matter in the universe
Evolution of the universe (beginning with the Big Bang)
Observing our universe
