HOMILY Sunday, 11 october 1998 “Far be it from me to glory except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” Gal St Paul’s words to the Galatians, which we have just heard, are well suited to the human and spiritual experience of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who has been solemnly enrolled among the saints today. She too can repeat with the Apostle: Far be it from me to glory except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Cross of Christ! Ever blossoming, the tree the Cross continues to bear new fruits of salvation. This is why believers look with confidence to the Cross, drawing from its mystery of love the courage and strength to walk faithfully in the footsteps of the crucified and risen Christ. Thus the message of the Cross has entered the hearts of so many men and women and changed their lives. The spiritual experience of Edith Stein is an eloquent example of this extraordinary interior renewal. A young woman in search of the truth has become a saint and martyr through the silent workings of divine grace: Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who from heaven repeats to us today all the words that marked her life: “Far be it from me to glory except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ”. 2. On 1 May 1987, during my Pastoral Visit to Germany, I had the joy of beatifying this generous witness to the faith in the city of Cologne. BEATA TERESA BENEDICTA DE LA CRUZ (EDITH STEIN) Su vida Estalla en 1914 la primera Guerra Mundial y Edith trabaja como enfermera en un hospital de cuatro mil camas. A esta obra se entrega de lleno. El estudio de fenomenología hecho con seriedad le lleva al conocimiento profundo de la Iglesia católica y se bautiza el 1.1.1922. El Dios o el Absoluto llena toda su alma: "Cristo se elevó radiante ante mi mirada; Cristo en el misterio de la Cruz'. Su encuentro definitivo fue en 1921 leyendo la Autobiografía de Santa Teresa. Su familia rompe con ella. El 21.4.1935, domingo de Pascua de Resurrección, emite sus votos religiosos y tres años después, aquel mismo día, sus votos perpetuos. Su vida será ya una "Cruz" convertida en "Pascua". Después de varios tormentos, el 9.8.1942, en el horno de gas del "infierno de Auschwitz", moría la mártir de la Cruz, Sor Bendicta. Fue beatificada el 1.5.1987 en Colonia. Su fiesta se celebra el 9 de agosto. Su espiritualidad "Su figura, su oración y su trabajo, su silencio y su pasión, su postrera marcha hacia el oriente, no desaparecerán fácilmente de la memoria de las generaciones venideras, irradiando siempre espíritu de fortaleza y despertando anhelos por ahondar en la fe, en la esperanza y en el amor".

Bl. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) Edith Stein was born to a Jewish family at Breslau on October 12, 1891. Through her passionate study of philosophy she searched after truth and found it in reading the autobiography of St. Teresa of Jesus. In 1922 she was baptized a Catholic and in 1933 she entered the Carmel of Cologne where she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She was gassed and cremated at Auschwitz on August 9, 1942, during the Nazi persecution and died a martyr for the Christian faith after having offered her holocaust for the people of Israel. A woman of singular intelligence and learning, she left behind a body of writing notable for its doctrinal richness and profound spirituality. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II at Cologne on May 1, 1987.

Sin embargo, la canonización no debe de hacernos creer que Edith Stein cobra solo relevancia coyuntural, circunstancial. Edith Stein, desde su primera incursión a la filosofía y posteriormente a la experiencia cristiana destacó entre sus contemporáneos a través de sus conferencias, de sus traducciones y de sus obras originales. Destacó además a través del significado que fue adquiriendo su vida y que dejó una profunda marca en aquellos que la conocieron y que compartieron con ella la búsqueda de la verdad. Una caracterización que me ha llamado la atención sobre esta extraordinaria mujer y que describe el arco de su vida es la que aporta Juan Pablo II el 1º de mayo de 1987 durante la homilía de su beatificación: "Edith Stein, judía, filósofa, religiosa, mártir".
