Confucius (K'ung fu-tze or Kung fu-tze (in Wade-Giles ) or Kong fuzi or Kong fu zi (in pinyin 551 BC 479 BC ) is probably the best-known of ancient Chinese philosopher He was born in the Chinese state of Lu 551 BC Spring and Autumn Period ) and was the son of a noble family who had recently fled from the state of Song . Confucius (K'ung Fu-tzu) lived from 551 BCE to 479 BCE during a time when imperial rule was breaking down in China. Confucius was of noble decent, but his family had lost its wealth and he grew up in relative poverty. His birth place was in the state of Lu which is part of the modern state of Shantung. Confucius settled down in the state of Lu and opened a school in his home at which he would teach anyone who came to learn regardless of their ability to pay. He flirted with the political arena, attempting to convince his contemporary political leaders the virtue of living a noble life. After 10 years or so of dismay in the political arena Confucius settled down to his school and taught for the rest of his life. bodyOffer(19813) Not much is reliably known about Confucius since the first biography of him was written 375 years or more after his death by Ssu-ma Ch'ien, an unreliable historian. Since so many years had passed since Confucius' death and because he was such a reputed noble and wise man, many legends had arisen about hime by the time Ssu-ma Ch'ien collected information on his life. Perhaps a more telling and more accurate account of Confucius can be found by analyzing his Analects, a collection of Confucius' sayings compiled by his students immediately following his death.

Background In poem # 242 from the Book of Songs (pp. 785-86), the speaker celebrates the ascendancy of the Chou Dynasty (ca. 1120 B. C.), suggesting that the dissolute behavior of the Shang-Yin rulers gradually deprived them of the Mandate of Heaven and transferred legitimacy to Chou. Though Chou had been a vassal border state and somewhat less culturally refined than Shang, early Chou monarchs viewed themselves not as alien conquerors but as divinely ordained inheritors and propagators of Shang civilization, which they had emulated since long before the conquest. The Chou thus presented themselves and the Shang as sprung from the same cultural rootstock, suggesting that both dynastic lines were legitimate descendants of the mythical Sage-Kings who had ruled in antiquity. Moving resolutely, the first three Chou rulers consolidated their domain by parceling out about seventy strategic fiefs to family, clan members, and political allies. Even the Shang, since they too once had been granted Heaven's Mandate to rule, were awarded an important state (Sung), wherein they continued to practice their ancestral rites. Through this pervasive and powerful network, the Chou court successfully imposed its language, rituals, political institutions, and the common cultural heritage of Shang and Chou throughout its domain. For nearly four hundred years, the Chou kings held military superiority, but all during that time, many vassal states were increasing in size and power. Locked in frequent wars with one another, they added to their holdings by defeating and annexing smaller neighbors. Thus, by 771 B. C., the state army of Royal Chou was so diminished that it easily fell before barbarian invaders, who sacked the capital city and murdered the king. When the capital was relocated farther to the east in the next year, the new King's military presence was insignificant.

Confucius (551-479 BC) is remembered by Chinese from all levels of life for various reasons. One noticeable one is his approach to education. He stimulated his students to think by posing questions. He also maintained that the moulding of the personality was of prime importance in education, and everything else followed from this. Thus, if the tales told after him have any truth in them, he tailored his methods to each student's needs. His teaching style was more in the way of informal conversations than formal classes. Roughly speaking, his discourse covered three fields: the classics and philosophy, including his views on reforms which would bring the government of the ducal states back to what he considered the ideal of ancient times; the forms and ceremonies of those past times; and poetry and music. He was an avid lover of music, which he once remarked could help mould kindness and uprightness of character. Wherever he went in his travels though the states, he collected the songs of the people, which he used in his teaching, and near the end of his life edited the ancient collection The Book of Songs Altogether at one time or another some 3,000 young men came to study under him. The 72 who were the brightest and spent the most time with him came to be known as his disciples. Some of them went with him on his travels to other states.

Chinese Philosopher Confucius became famous as a sage, or wise man, of China during the so-called ' Age of Philosophers '. His 'Five Classics' which record his teachings, have influenced the civilizations of all of eastern Asia. Confucius was born in the state of Lu at a time when local rulers failed to pay homage to the emperor of a declining Chou dynasty. Confucius deplored the disorder and looked back with nostalgia to earlier times. He studied the teachings of the sages whose influence had made China a united nation in the past. Confucius decided that he must restore the faith and practices of the emperors and sages of old. Unable to obtain an official position to implement his ideas of reform, he spent his life educating a group of disciples. Confucius sought to provide sound rules for every occasion in life. Profoundly concerned by the miseries of the world, he wanted to make men noble in order to bring about a noble world. His concepts of benevolence, ritual and propriety became state ideology during the Han times.

Confucius, the Man While he was living, Confucius was not a powerful man, nor even a particularly famous man. He was born in China in 551 B.C., and was not much different from most ordinary men in his time. However, today he is well-known as one of China's most prestigious and prominent teachers, and his wisdom is heard around the world. bodyOffer(901) Confucius was a failed politician, having traveled the land, searching for years to find an appropriate governmental post. Eventually he gave up trying, and went back to his hometown to continue teaching and studying. He edited many different types of texts, from poetry to history and music. He wrote a book called The Analects, which is a collection of short answers to questions. Each answer begins, "The Master says," which is probably where the popular saying, "Confucius say," originated. With a fondness in his heart for the past, Confucius often rhapsodized about the long-gone "golden age" of the Duke of Chou, a leader in Confucius' youth who had been responsible for instituting many of the nation's festivals, religious practices, ceremonies and morals. At least that was the way Confucius remembered it. Not typically considered a religious leader, Confucius did not wax poetic about God or metaphysics. He discussed heaven, but only as an impersonal force of morality or ethics, not in the traditional spiritual sense. He was practical and more concerned with earthly matters, such as good manners and treating others kindly and enhancing family relations.
