WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS (1865-1939)
The Bounty of Sweden: A Meditation, and a Lecture Delivered Before the Royal Swedish Academy and Certain Notes . Dublin, Ireland: The Cuala Press, 1925. The Bounty of Sweden was Yeats' tribute to Swe- den for his award of the Nobel Prize. Printing of the work was completed on the last day of May 1925 in an edition of 400 copies. It was the first book issued from Cuala's new shop and workrooms at 133 Lower Baggot Street in Dublin, to which the press had moved after several years in the poet's house at 82 Merrion Square, Dublin. The circular device on the title page, depicting a hawk attacking a small bird, was designed by T. Sturge Moore at Yeats' request in 1921. This copy is a setting or proof copy, with numerous pencil corrections in the margins, inscribed by Yeats on July 9, 1925. Autograph letter signed, to [Shri Purohit] Swami, Dublin, July 3 [1932], 2 pages. As a young man, Yeats studied at the School of Art in Dublin where, along with a fellow student George Russell (A.E.), he developed an interest in mystic religion and the supernatural. In this letter to an Indian Swami, one of a series in the University of Delaware Library's Special Collections, Yeats compares phenomena experienced by gurus to those recorded by European saints and mediums.

March 1999 Classical Poet: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
By: Roberto Quintos , Contributing Writer
One of Ireland's finest writers, William Butler Yeats served a long apprenticeship in the arts before his genius was fully developed. He did some of his greatest work after he was 50 years old.
Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865, the eldest son of an artist. Although the family soon moved to London, the children spent much time with their grandparents in County Sligo in northwestern Ireland. The scenery and folklore of this region greatly influenced Yeats's work. For a while he studied art, but during the 1890s he became active in London's literary life and helped found the Rhymers' Club.
Yeats's early work was not especially Irish. Soon, however, he began to look to the ancient rituals and pagan beliefs of the land for his artistic inspiration. He tried to merge this interest with his aristocratic tastes to create an original Irish poetry and to establish his own identity.
In 1896 Yeats met Lady Gregory, an aristocrat and playwright who shared his interest in Ireland's past, especially in its folklore. In 1899 they formed a literary society that was the predecessor of the Abbey Theatre. Among his plays were 'The Countess Cathleen' (1892) and 'Cathleen ni Houlihan' (1902), with Maud Gonne originating the title role. In 1899 he had proposed to her, but she refused to marry him. He later proposed to her daughter, who also refused. A free Ireland was the object of the actress' passion, and Yeats's love for her kindled his interest in the country's political struggles. From 1922 until 1928 he was a senator in the Dail Eireann, or Irish parliament.

William Butler Yeats Microfilmed Manuscripts Collection Bottom Library Homepage Yeats Guide Special Collections Introduction William Butler Yeats, 1865-1939, was a prominent Irish poet and playwright, as well as a leader in the Irish Literary and Theatre Movements. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. This guide represents a work-in-progress. The original draft was completed by Project Archivist Peggy L. McMullen in September, 1988, finishing a complex, challenging, and difficult project begun by Arthur F. Sniffin in the fall of 1985. Throughout this period of arranging and describing elusive and sometimes indecipherable documents, we were able to draw on the expertise of Dr. Narayan Hegde. First as a graduate student, and subsequently as a consulting scholar, he had worked intermittently with the collection from its arrival at Stony Brook's Center for Contemporary Arts and Letters in 1975. Other graduate students who worked on the initial indexing of the collection in the mid-1970s were Linda Bauer, Terry Lichtenstein, and Jerry Schecter. Special Collections Department staff started planning for the housing and processing of the Yeats Collection in 1983. I am indebted to Rose C. Brown and Susan C. Rose for their continuing contributions to the overall planning, organizing, and housing of the collection, and for providing various kinds of support during the project. Timothy D. Cary and Lee R. Hiltzik also worked on many aspects of planning and implementing the project. Subsequently, Diane E. Englot has helped in revising and editing the collection.

Born in Dublin, he would become arguably one of the best English-language poets of the 20th century. As a child, Yeats lived between County Siglo, Ireland and London. He was a mediocre student until he discovered poetry and mysticism. At 20, he founded the Dublin Hermetic Society. By 25, he was president of the Irish National Theatre Society. He had already written several poems and plays on his own, and would soon be known as the leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance. Yeats is best known for the dense combinations of symbolism, mysticism, history, philosophy and psychology in his poetry. One of his most famous works, "The Second Coming," broke away from romantic influences and developed the reputation Yeats needed to win the

Search all of William Butler Yeats Irish poet, dramatist and prose writer, one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century. Yeats received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Between the Celtic dreams of THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889) and the intellectual, often obscure poetry of the 1930s, Yeats produced a tremendous amount of works. In his early career Yeats studied William Blake's poems, Emanuel Swedenborg's writings and other visionaries, but later he began to confront reality with a new directness - and disillusionment. Central theme in Yeats's poems is Ireland, its history, folklore and contemporary public life.
William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin. His father was a lawyer turned to an Irish Pre-Raphaelite painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and settled in Bedford Park. In 1881 they returned to Dublin, where Yeats studied the Metropolitan School of Art. He met there the poet, dramatist and painter George Russell (1867-1935), who was interested in mysticism.
Reincarnation, communication with the dead, mediums, supernatural systems and Oriental mysticism fascinated Yeats through his life. In 1886 Yeats formed the Dublin Lodge of the Hermetic Society and took the magical name Daemon est Deus Inversus. The occult order also attracted Aleister Crowley.

William Butler Yeats is unique in his multi-form position. He is on the one hand a poet, dramatist, essayist, and novelist. He is a mystic, prophet, romantic lover, senator, Nobel prize winner, and theorist on the other hand. As he once remarked, he is "a lonely crowd." From the contemporary theoretical perspective, he is the theoretical explorer of the poetics of "open form" more than anything else. The purpose of this Yeats International Cyberspace is through the cyberlinks of "trace" to illustrate how William Butler Yeats was, has been, is, and will be the poet of multi-form, of open form, of projective form, in short, of cyberspace.

Continuity And Change: The Poetry Of William Butler Yeats. The Life Of W.B Yeats:
  • William Butler Yeats was born on the 13 of June ,1865, in Sandymount, Dublin, Ireland. William spent his early childhood summers with his mother’s family in the west of Ireland. Yeats was not only a wonderful poet , he also founded the Irish Literary Societies in Dublin and London. For most of his life, Yeats loved Maud Gonne, a beautiful Irish Pioneer, however his love was unrequited. Maud Gonne, the Legends and countryside of Ireland were inspirations for many of Yeats’ most beautiful poetry. In 1923, Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Yeats finally married George Hyde-Lees and subsequently had two children, Anne and Micheal. Yeats died on the 28 of January,1939. At the time of his death, Yeats was recognised as the most brilliant poet Ireland had ever produced.
The Poetry Of William Butler Yeats: W.B. Yeats is one of the greatest love poets of all time. Maud Gonne was the inspiration for most of Yeats most wonderfully crafted love poems. Through Yeats’ poetry we can see continuity, whereby his subject never changes, he never falls out of love with Maud Gonne so to speak, rather his attitude towards both her and love itself changes, he seems to give up on ever having her for his own and we can see this change in the way he expresses his love Maud. In ‘He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven’ Yeats attempts to woo Maud .
